One topic that crossed my mind was VF's music. What does everyone think about VF's OST? Here are my thoughts:

On one hand, VF's music is great. Dubstep absolutely blows, and VF completely rejecting it is a welcome decision.

On the other hand, I feel like VF's music is not character driven enough. The music always feels like it is representing either the stage, or the outer appearance of the character. Examples include Jacky's vanilla VF5 theme, as it reflects on how energetic he is on the outside, but is dead silent about his tragic backstory and how that has shaped him. This is something I wish that the composers would do more to accommodate.

Tell me your thoughts in the comments. Do you agree with my takes, or do you think I am just babbling? Respond respectfully, and I will do the same.

One music I do not like is the character select theme for VF5US. It's based off a bunch of scales and to me it sounded like a lazy attempt at music

I personally like that theme for the way it hypes me up before a match, but I do agree it is a more generic character theme. This is especially true compared to Street Fighter 3 Third Strike's character theme.

My suggestion for VF's music is that it should use different genre's and instruments to reflect the personality and lore of the characters. Here are a few ideas:

    • Akira and Kage's themes could use traditional Japanese instruments, but Akira's could be more adventurous while Kage's could reflect isolation.
    • Former/current J6 assassins (Sarah, Goh, Jean) could use death metal for their themes to reflect on their tortured states. Goh and Jeans could have a more sinister melody to show that they are currently J6 assassins, while Sarah could have a traumatic melody to show that her fate as a J6 assassin was pre trauma.
    • Jacky's theme could have more of a classic rock feel combined with a depressing country style to reflect both sides of his personality.
The list goes on. Feel free to reply if you wish to expand on this idea.

I personally agree with that statement. FS has the most bangers in my opinion. R does a great job, but vanilla and US have a few bangers.

My thoughts exactly on the ost nowadays not being character driven. FS to me was absolutely bland. Like almost ALL of the themes sounded more or less the same. I was disappointed that Shun Di's theme went from the iconic VF2's to some generically sounded metal rock theme in VF5FS. It didn't fit him at all and I didn't know whether it was an overall game decision or based off of the character's personality but it definitely felt like the former.

I actually like Jacky's vanilla VF5 stage honestly it's my favorite one between the VF5s variations. The stage itself was also cool how it rained a little and seen the rain drops splash on the streets (ugh) little detailed stuff like that was so cool in vanilla. sad they took it out in the newer ones..

FS is my personal favorite soundtrack over all, but I see your point with Shun Di. They also did a similar thing with Aoi's theme which is odd. But I personally like FS because the majority of them felt like they were more fitting than average.

I personally thing the problem is especially noticeable in Sarah's themes. Instead of reflecting on her story, the composers always just give her a badass theme because she's a badass. I would prefer a more tortured sounding song to reflect on her past. I am aware that they made a darker sounding song for her in VF4 vanilla, but it was very generically so. I genuinely can not find a single theme for Sarah that is both masterfully composed and fitting to her character.

I like the style of music used in VF2 overall. Lion's theme and Shun's theme, sound really good and exciting in that game, especially when fighting to it. They should do exciting music like that for VF6.

I also like VF2's style of music, but I also thing the audio is very dated, and remaking that style for the modern day would certainly be welcome.
