Ive been away for a looong time, since there was no VF scene in my country besides Sydney. Im hoping things will pick up for VF5, and now this site has converted to the Soul Calibur movement abriviation.

Its disturbing as hell because I didnt play SC3 that much, and now i have to count the points on a joystick.

When and why did it happen?

    Hey Gove,

It took me by surprise too. If you read my posts, I still use the old "english" system. For reading, that system works well.

But I do think the new "SC" notation is good for certain circumstances:

-It's actually more international. When speaking with people who didn't grow up in english speaking countries, I've had an easier time describing things with the numeric notation.

-Doesn't have the diagonal confusion in general vocal conversation. How many times have I said down-forward and it was heard as tapping down, then forward... In general, for those that understand the notation, it's much easier to vocally describe moves, combos, sequences, and commands.

The thing that is kind of bad is that for some native english-speakers, it makes the process of learning VF through community a little bit more intimidating at first. But it's obviously not that hard to get.

I also need to learn how to use the SC notation system since I got used to the Tekken and street fighter notation system. But the old english way isn't all that bad:

    f- forward
    d- down
    b- back
    u- up
    df- down forward
    db- down back
    uf- up forward
    ub- up back
_,_- one notaion followed by another notation(i.e. forward, forward)

I don't see whats so hard about it.

Nothing hard about it at all. Which is why the old english system was used often in faq writing and, in terms of reading and writing, is very practical. Probably the most practical.

But like I said, when I'm talking to somebody (not writing and reading), because of the diagonal directional taps... Something like down forward would need "diagonal" ahead of it. Which was fine, but I had a bad habit of saying things like, Akira's uppercut is down forward, down forward plus punch. And someone would reasonably think that was d,f,d,f+P. So I'd correct myself.

But again, that's an extreme case.

But I will say the advantage of the numeric system is that I've been able to communicate VF with non-native english speakers much more easily.

But due to habit, I tend to write my posts in english /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

It's when you explain it verbally that's hard. It's just a mouthful to say down-forward and much easier to say 3.

It's quite easy to pick up the movement abbreviation in this board.

But with Tekken, that's a whole different story. They'll use numbers instade.

    "f,b 1+4+3"
    then someone else responds
    "no no it's 1+3+2+2+4"

    and you'll be like "2+2=4?" /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif
