    @Unicorn,

First I loved the long post! Between you and Swordsainte you've took a lot of burden from me. I'm usually the one accused of having a wall of text. But I enjoyed the whole story. I've been VFDC a long time, and you post is one of the most refreshing I've ever read. It has and will have a great deal of value to me.

Its interesting, I've been on VFDC for about a decade now. There are at least 3 groups that I pay attention to more that I don't pay attention to, but at least 3 that I do.

Group 1 are the VF technicians, these are the cats, that are so elevated that the game is more about how many frames of advantage or disadvante you're at in any given situation, there so good at that arthmetic, until they have it memorized, so many frames advantage after this move, that move is unsafe, guaranteed throw here etc. VF almost become a numbers game for this crowd most of them could certainly score a VF match 00000by numbers, they use the Dojo to put together a winning session

Group 2, are the I beat you in SF, I beat U in MK I. I Beat u in Blaze Blue , I Beat you in SC, now I'm going to beat you in Viruta fighter and I 'll do it with my Tekken setups! These are the competitors who use fighting games (it doesn't matter which fighting games) to show their personal video game superiority.

Group 3 This group also are afficiandos of the fighting game genre, This group tends to like martial arts movies, some are martial artists themesleves and they like fighting games that are reminiscent of the real martial arts, or the martial arts movies, the believable the better. ppl in this group once they find VF are fans of the game 4ever. This group finds in VF martial arts beauty and elegance. Not necessarily because the the martial arts in VF are realistic, more because the martial arts in VF are believable, credible, and suggestive of real martial arts. VF reminds them of some Kungfu cinema they've scene somewhere before.

For Group 1, A win is a numerical thing, I had this many advantages frames vs that many of your disdvantage frames, I hit you with 8 frame advantage now your in stun, I'll use the wall to take your remain points.

    For Group 2
. They win at all costs and by any means necessary. All moves are legal to this group and if spam is needed then spam is it, I just want to add one more to m y win column

For group 3 winning is related to bringing the beauty and the elegance out of VF during a match. Winning has to do with how well the match was played by both players. In some cases these folks don't even keep track of W/L statistics they just love the beauty of the game play. Its the quality of the match for them and if they happen to have the longest life bar at the end of the match well that's all good too. Group 3 players like to talk about Aoi's Jujitsu, Jean's Karate, Kage's Ninjitsu. They will debate whether Brad is a Kickboxr or muay thai. As far as this group is concerned A win is defined if they were able to fully use Pai's kungfu, or Lau's Kungfu, etc How tough was the Shaolin monk. There is a little more martial arts immersion with group 3 .

If the match was visibly ugly, Group 3 won't appreciate the win that much. On the other hand if the match had a martial arts beauty to it then a group3 person will accept his/her loss but will have still enjoyed the game.

Depending on whether you in Group 1,2, or 3 (and most of us are) Then a win is only a win if..........

lol...yea I hate playing lames...if my opponent is low ranking like a 10Kyu or something I pick a random character or some1 I am trying to learn like (Vanessa or Goh) to fight them...that makes it a little challenging...but its screwing up my record....am about 660 and I am still only a Raider...

I kinda given up on this game. When I made it up to the higher dan ranks, I was disappointed in knowing that most of the high rank players are scrubs, and won most of their matches winning against a 10Kyo that just started. I cant play at a technical level when my opponent is constantly spamming 2P and mashing PPPPPPP all day. So now I have to fight at their level and lame out every match because of that. Not fun.

couldn't agree more. I call it laming out. Plenty of people do this in rank scared to lose they bullshit title.

You should find some decent players off this forum and agree to do some lobby casual matches for training.

i'm down with this. i could get behind regular casual games and knock some rust off that way. ranked play gets really stressful if i'm having a bad day.

I think a win is a win when both fighters tried is best as they could. just like in real martial arts the goal should be to constantly improve yourself, and to always give your best no matter if you win or lose.
The ranked matches are kinda lame because it mostly removes the element mentioned above, though I think executed the ranked matches much better in VF5FS Because you always get battle points, no matter if you win or lose. This brings VF5FS that much closer to being the 'Gran Turismo' of fighting games

Rank match doesn't really start though until you get past the dans. Once you get to hunter you can no longer get rank by playing people in the kyu and dan ranks, only people that are hunter and higher add to your rank bar.

You find spammers at higher ranks online in every online fighting game VF is no exception. Go to any other game site they will talk about the same thing there too. If you hate online play that bad find local tournaments and play there. If they spam that badly they will leave themselves open to a ton of counter hits leading to free damage constantly. Just take your free wins basically and move in because that is what online play is in a nutshell in general. Get used to it because that is the reality of things online.

@ the OP-- I would just do whatever comes natural to you.

If you're fighting a pretty good VF player, they're not going to let you get away with a cheesy win anyway.

That being said, if you start losing--you'll find that you're going to have to use more advanced stuff to win. In the long run---learning how to play "legit" isn't so much a choice as a neccesity. I.E.-- you won't avoid doing a basic set up or risky move in order to not be cheesy---you'll avoid it so you don't get your butt handed to you.

I wouldn't give up on the game but I personally retired from ranked at 7th Dan lol after experiencing much of the same nonsense, it really sucks the fun out of the game when players at barbarian and defender play as if they're foaming at the mouth while mashing as hard as they can; a wolf player I played a few days back was the last straw, I realised that playing vs mindless trash like him who only care about points and can't even be bothered to learn one combo was making me hate the game, imo VF has the second worst ranked after KOF ranked which is the absolute gutter of gaming so I think the best bet for now is to stick to player matches and rooms.

Well, ranked is rarely the place to go in fighting games to improve. I think one of the most valuable skills in fighting games is to be able to adapt and change your game depening on what your opponent does. That is, not relying too much on stuff you've thought up beforehand. No one can download and fully understand a high ranked player in a few rounds. That is where longer sessions come into play. Being able to stay unpredictable after 15 games is a lot harder, and you can't abuse your gimmicks because of your opponents ability to adapt.

I would really like to see more people in player matches, I always have a good time there. Even if I get my ass kicked by cheap stuff I look at it as a favor, because then my opponent have exposed an abusable weakspot in my game. And because I can play him again (in player matches) I can experiment with different counter strategies without worry. When I have figured it out, there I go, level up!

I play ranked all the time and see no reason why anyone should be upset about "spammers". If you can't beat someone when you know what they're going to do, hiding in player match isn't going to help.

If you like player match, play it. But don't play just because you're frustrated. Learn people's habits and kill them for being repetitive. Even high level players can be predictable, you just have to know what to look for.

    What Gernburgs said.

I haven't played online in as much time as I've been in Nicaragua. One of my roommates is really stepping up his game since I returned, and we've been having great matches. Plus, we don't have the best Internet connection; I always feel like an idiot for not only being the likely cause for the lag, but also losing matches pretty badly because of it.

I don't think the guy I quoted earlier in refrence to spammers said that he couldn't beat the spammers, just that having to adapt to a lame playstyle to counter them and having to mirror their cheesy tactics made the game less fun to play, I happen to agree.

That's just it, you DON'T to adopt their tactics, it's simply not necessary. If you know they are going abare out of a disadvantage, almost every character, if not EVERY character, can get ~90+ damage on a major counter.

If they are overly aggressive your number goal should be getting that big counter on you advantage or sidestepping their PPP and getting a counter or side crumple. ANY time you KNOW what they're going to do, you can punish for big damage with every character in the game.

There is no right/wrong way to play. There's just "the way you play". If you win, good. If you lose, hopefully you learned something. Move on...
