the review in a nutshell :

""Holy jesus does this game suck. I tried the Marine campaign, and it was too dark, too suspenseful, and get this: I was ambushed by aliens and backed into a corner!""

    review FAIL -_-

btw, heres a good melee guide for those frustrated with close combat: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1139428

ps. seems OXM reviewed the game and gave it an 8 out of 10 [IMG]
cant wait to see the PC review..

I agree. Seems like blind hate to me. Maybe he had some pre-conceived notions of the game or something.

The damage scaling for the Alien does worry me though. A lot.

Well, compared to the previous titles (even AvP2) the Alien controls were tight. I've clocked in countless hours in both AvP and AvP2 online, mostly playing as an alien, and from my few hours of experience with this game, it seriously sucks for multiplay. Slow speed and vitality is a terrible combination. For me, this makes or breaks the game for me.

And, yeah it is a gamespot review (they did give Fallout/Oblivion 9ish [IMG] ), but you never know, already 2 mediocre reviews for a game I was really looking forward to.

Yeah, some of the gripes feel retarded, but both stated the boredom of being bum-rushed by the 1000th pack of xenomorphs. It can get boring (kinda like playing L4D alone, or Half-Life 2 in general), which is what made the AvP so good, is that there were never large-never-ending mobs. Rarely would you fight more than 3 xenomorphs at a time, and though the numbers were "low," the game still feels right.

hmm i see your point, makes sense. whats holding me is the fact that this game WILL change (at least on pc...) over time. the community will ask for soem changes and hopefully the developers wil listen. everything is there, the gfx, the sounds, the violence, all it needs is a bit of tweaking.

one thing is for sure, a 5.5 is waaaaay to harsh, this game is defenetly not a 5.

Same thing here, the slow speed is crazy. As far as the marines go, my species of choice I never remembered moving so slow. In fact the only species that seemed to move quickly was the Predator from what I could tell.

Some complained AVP1 had broken Predators.
Some complained AVP2 was too "spastic."
Both complaints are better than it being too slow.

    And wheres my corporation?

Oblivion/Fallout were worthy of their 9 review, it's just opinions though.

I take my reviews pretty seriously, seeing 5.5 from gamespot hurts me eyes, good thing I pre-ordered battlefield 2 instead of this game.

I'm installing the PC version now, I'll let you guys know how it is. I can say though, after playing the demo for all 3 systems, the PC version is leaps and bounds better than the consoles.

This will only lead to an off topic tangent, but...

How? They both fail as RPGs in terms of the lack of choices offered, speech/dialogue/charisma are done very badly leading to games very combat based. If the combat was done well, that would be fine, but shooting mechanics are laughably inferior to any FPS since 1998, and the melee/unarmed combat is so dumbed down it makes it almost a chore to play.

Yes, reviews are nothing but opinions, but considering how poorly designed those games are in almost every aspect aside from graphics, it is a shame that those games got far more attention then they deserved.

I think when you look at a lot of the design choices in Fallout 3 you will find that they are piss poor, but the main reason that it got such good reviews was that it was a slick overall package. I think I got a lot more mileage out of Oblivion and Fallout 3 in spite of the horrible voice acting, aesthetics, combat mechanics, polarized dialogue options (good or evil! nothing else!), and writing. It really was unintentionally entertaining in a way, more of a gut, visceral experience for me than anything else. Just my take.

Ok, I've got about 6 hours of playtime with AvP now, so I can give an honest first-impression. So here goes.

I can't believe I'm actually writing this: AvP multiplayer is much better than the singe-player.

There, I said it. Overall, the game is good, but has its flaws. After significant time with the full release I can clearly see that this game was built from the ground up as a PC multiplayer action game. In that respect, its a lot of fun.

Yes, there are issues with the multiplayer; lag, connection issues, and the big question about dedicated servers are all pretty common complaints about modern multiplayer PC titles (except the dedicated server issue, thats just piss-poor planning). AvP's unique game style does make lag a much more frustrating issue than most games.

As for the single player, I've played a few levels as each species and can't say I'm really impressed with any of them. The story isn't terribly compelling (in fact, its a combination of Alien:Ressurection and AvP). The graphics are fantastic and the environments are gorgeous and well varied, but the scripted events fall a bit short of the drama they're aiming for. Something about each campaign just feels lacking. A good FPS adventure by some standards, but it certainly lacks the polish that many tripe-A titles have received in the past few years.

Then theres the multiplayer. My god I haven't had so much fun with a game in a long time. Theres just so many unique moments in this game that you can't possibly get in any other game. I've nearly jumped all the way out of my seat by another player's sneak attack. Thats right, I got scared by a PLAYER, not a scripted event. And once that happens to you, your nerves will sit on edge for the rest of the match (maybe the rest of the night).

The teamwork scenarios that are made possible by some of the MP modes are simply astounding. I may give a few examples in a later post, but for now, this post has gone on long enough. Heres my summary:

AvP is a good game that lacks a bit of polish. The single player campaigns are decent and varied, but multiplayer is where this experience really shines.

Regarding the combat, if you don't like the Vats system then you don't like it, Fallout 3 wasn't meant for precision shooting like other shooters. For me personally, I enjoyed the amount of freedom that I could have going wherever I want and such, I havn't played many games like that and it was a really fresh change of pace for me. The result of the freedom kind of took a blow on the main story, but there were also many side-quests so it made up for it somewhat. I think for the money I payed it really gave a good bang for the buck compared to other games, Oblivion I haven't played much at all so I can't really comment at that atm.
