Oh, I do love this thread! It's about time too...nice one uk-guy!

In no particular order...

STREET FIGHTER 2: THE ANIMATED MOVIE
The first animé I'd ever seen...and boy, what a rush! This one is still on of my fave's 'til this day! Okay, granted it's not the most complex plot in the world, but with this much style and charisma from the opening Ryu Vs. Sagat fight with the onlooking cyborg to the final fight (DOUBLE HADOU-KEN?!?!?!) and even the movie finishing with Ryu in the air, ready to kick Bison coming at him in an 18-wheeler...pure class!

GHOST IN THE SHELL
Unbelievable, remarkable, intriguing, stunning. The origins of the style of The Matrix becomes starkly apparent upon watching this...note particularly when Kusanagi lands after a long-ish jump, crumpling the area where she lands. Loads of other plot parallels (everyone jacked into a network) and stylistic ones (pillars reduced to apple cores as a result of gun-fire).

AKIRA
The Pills Vs. The Clowns? Huge energy sphere spreading exponentially through Neo Tokyo? Kid with a serious inferiority complex gaining god-like powers beyond his control? Kaneda's bike? Quite simply, a stunning piece of science fiction. It succeeds in bringing to life a seething, post-apocalyptic megaopolis; undoubtedly hitting a chord with the Japanese population, which IS post-apocalyptic in itself (funny how the US is the only country to have used the atomic bomb...THREE TIMES...and is the only Western country that still has a death penalty). Extremely difficult to contract such a long comic book saga into an animated motions picture of about two hours, but all credit to them...what a great job! Oh yeah, and a killer score!

THE ANIMATRIX
Going back to the roots of The Matrix, thought-provoking, insightful, exhilarating...and a warning for the future. Threads weaving in and around the Wachowski's distopian future, combined with such vivid and different styles of animation makes for an amazing, and somewhat overlooked, classic. Great stuff.

NINJA SCROLL
Ah! Blood, guts, and an atmosphere that would give even the mighty Tenchu a run for it's money! Beutifully animated (especially on the relatively low budget that this was), inspired action sequences, and you can suddenly see why style over substance isn't always a bad thing! Definitely one of my personal faves.

...and there you have it! My favourite animés of all time!

Peace out.

I could not agree more with anything written on these boards, SF2 is probably, if not, the best anime I have seen. It is much better than its new anime 'alpha' counter-part, which lacks story and detail. SF2 is probably one of the first animes ive seen and still stays at the top.

A rare one Ive seen that no one seems to mention is Venus wars, the drawings are a bit old but its still a good one (like Akira) and once you get past the old goodies such as Ninja Scroll, Cobra, Fatal Fury, Astro etc, youll find the new animes lack the heart of the true old ones. But I found "Blood the last vampire" and "Vampire Hunter D" to keep some of those old values they used to have.

Okay, here's my favorite anime films:

1) Grave of the Fireflies
2) Spirited Away
3) Laputa: Castle in the Sky
4) Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind
5) Whisper of the Heart
6) Porco Rosso
7) My Neighbor Totoro
8) Princess Mononoke
9) Osamu Tesuka's Metropolis
10) Kiki's Delivery Service
11) Castle of Cagliostro

Obviously, I'm a major fan of Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. Sue me. It's the best animation studio in the world, and Miyazaki (and Takahata, if just for Fireflies) is one of the world's greatest living directors.

Thank goodness most of the remaining Ghibli films are arriving in the US in 2004 -- but, please, skip the lousy English dubs and stay with the subtitles.

Anybody have a copy of Pom Poko or Only Yesterday? I haven't been able to find a copy via Kazaa yet.

Miyazaki all the way!

(off-topic) I wish they'd make some anime from Akira Kurosawa's movies.

Okay, after spending a great deal of time writing reviews for every Studio Ghibli movie I could get my hands on, it's time for me to re-evaluate my list.

I still feel that Grave of the Fireflies is the best animated movie I've ever seen, if just for the weight of its ideas and emotional strength. It's an unforgettable experience.

Now, on to Miyazaki's best film. This is such a tough choice for me because every movie he's made over the last 20 years is magnificent. In America, he's still cinema's best-kept secret, so we're just now discovering it all. But which movie is his best? You could pick any one, really.

However, right now I have to say it's Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind. It's intelligent and compelling, and challenges a lot of conventions, like good-versus-evil and gender roles. I enjoy it for its free spirit, its influence on animation, and its emotional impact that, in some ways, has never really been bettered.

I could name Mononoke instead, but this is really the same story, retold through different characters. It is also a much darker, meloncholy film, and after you read the Nausicaa books, it becomes an entirely new movie. Maybe I'm not willing to abandon my ideaism just yet.

It's all part of one large epic -- both films and the graphic novel. The Nausicaa books are outstanding; I've just finished reading, and it's one of the best novels I've ever read. My brain will be swimming for years.

Anyway, I don't want to go on and on -- I just finished a 1400-word review of the Nausicaa movie for my website (which should be updated any time now), and I need a rest. But the fact that this story is so compelling to me means something.

Anyway, lists are arbitrary, anyway. Fireflies, Nausicaa, everything by Miyazaki, and then go from there. At some point you'll discover Waking Life and Yellow Submarine and Metropolis, and by then you'll have all the animation you'll ever need.

-Revolutionary Girl Utena
-The Record of Lodoss War
-Slam Dunk
-The first Steet Fighter movie (SO GOOD)
-Both VHD Movies (especially the original)

Growing up I was introduced to anime on the sci-fi network. They showed like a censored version of the first VHD movie and the first two episodes of Lodoss War, so those two titles still remind me of being a kid and being in awe. One man once said, with distain in his voice, "Lodoss was is just Dungeons and Dragons meets Anime." And I say "EXACTLY!!!"

My favorite series of all time has to be Revolution Girl Utena. I've seen the 39 episode series at least 7 times through, and I'm dying to see it again. The music kicks ass and it has the stopwatch of doom! Sooooo, soooo good.

It's funny, when my students ask me what's popular anime in America I say "Cowboy Beebop" (since a ton of people I know LOVE it) and they're confused and then ask "... is that American?"

My list:

1. Rurouni Kenshin
2. Serial Experiments Lain
3. Ninja Scroll
4. Ghost in the Shell
5. Akira
6. Cowboy Bebop
7. Scrapped Princess
8. Samurai X OVAs
9. Hellsing
10. Naruto

Rurouni Kenshin has been my favorite anime ever since I saw it a few years back. I don't know if anything will ever be able to dethrone it.
