I really like that idea. Storylines in fighting games don't mean much to me - I like to watch FMVs once, and that's about it. This rival thing is cool. There's a little of it in the VF5 Ver.b attract-mode sequence. After reading what you wrote, I watched the sequence again and it was more enjoyable - the characters had a little more personality.

    Woohoo! Tangent into VF Fiction!

I think Akira and Wolf used to have a rivalry? (VF2)

Apparently Aoi and Brad have a rivalry in VF5. He just wants his sweet flower of Nihon (sorry, stole that from 1Up Yours) and umm... she obsessively hates him enough that maybe she's liking him more than Akira now?

Lion has a rivalry with the half-man he used to be :p Or maybe the mantis he accidentally stepped on in Kids.

Lau and Pai have always had a rivalry, though maybe they patched that up between VF3 and VF4? (Remember the silly story of how she hates him for neglecting her Mom).

Kage has a rivalry with Judgement Whatever (J6? Would be sad if it was the Jackson 5). Maybe against Dural because bouncing saggy boobs + memories of Mama does not make a happy camper. He also has a rivalry with all of the Kage clones at the Mahjong table.

Jeffry has a rivalry with... a shark... seriously... dumbest story in a fighting game, and there are plenty of dumb ones out there.

Shun has a rivalry with time :p

Lau now has a rivalry with time :p

Sarah has a weird twisted rivalry with her brother. I wonder what Freud would say...

Jacky has a rivalry with slow motion... BTW, almost forgot he was a race car driver!

El Blaze has a rivalry with the next Mexican voice actor.

Taka Arashi has a rivalry with VF4 and VF5.

AND THE VF UNIVERSE IS AWESOME! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

    Well... not really...

Anyhow, my vote for next fighting style in the game.... They already gave me Muay Thai. I wanted boxing, but Muay Thai will do though they're not alike... I wanted a grappler with a decent pace... they gave me Judo...

Oh I know! I would love KALI to be in VF. While Kali is generally associated with weapons fighting (rattan sticks and knives), there are a lot of hand-to-hand applications and I think Kali would be great.

Kicks would sort of be limited application. Heck, maybe the most useful kick would be a sabaki of some sort that would eat low kicks and sidekicks. There would be a lot of inashi like attacks that do hit and lead to other things. Strikes to the joints and neck. An elbow that can eat certain high and mid punches (low reward, but also low risk). Maybe setup other stuff afterwards, but nothing guaranteed. They could extend the library of attacks with joint locks as well and the throws could be somewhat based on the knife and stick techniques (using the hand though instead of a stick or a knife).

It would be a character that would have a base set of standard moves, but probably one of the few times where a character's game really revolved around parries and reversals (that do double as pokes). It would be tricky to balance, so you would almost have to make the set of attacks that a single parry/reversal can handle, sort of awkward just to make sure the game wouldn't get broken, but again, the reward would have more to do with having advantage and a few hit throws than anything else.

I'd really be down with Kali in VF.

And then for a more aesthetic style... but along the same lines of system additions with Kali... Maybe Wing Chun?

Though I guess they could create a character that uses both Kali and Wing Chun too :p

i'm praying for a 40-something attractive female (by "attractive" i mean the archetype would be along the lines of maggie cheung).

her fighting style would be chaquan, and she would be best at launching medium to long-range attacks.

her personal background would be nobility, or perhaps royalty - basically just an excuse for her to dress elaborately and fight in an overconfident fashion (as reflected by boastful pauses/poses after certain moves).

    I love Maggie Cheung /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

But I think VF could go more Euro, African, or put Myke in there because Jeffry isn't cutting it for Australia. With Myke, they'd knock two diversity stones with one character!

And they could get the original to do the voice acting!

    All kidding aside...

I wouldn't mind a southeast Asian. I dunno, I just think a bit more diversity would be good in VF.

YEAH! He could be like an "unlockable" hidden boss . . . . where, say, you go throw arcade mode on hard difficulty without continuing, you see a "special cutscene" where just before arriving at the battle area, Dural gets OWNED by some unknown figure, then BOLO is seen walking up to the battle area!

Re: Char and fighting style you want for a future

How about weapons? I mean, just listen to me ok? I had envisioned a grab for Shun, where his little bottle thats tied to his clothes, wraps around his opponents neck turning them around, shun pulls down on it so they lean back onto him and he is gaining drink points while in this grab and releases with a smack to the face with a bottle. Then it occured that that would count as a weapon. Or if Jacky could use nun-chuks. Or lei fei coul whip out his 3 part staff thats on his leg. Kno wha'
    ah mean?!

I'd *love* for a guy to use Kyokushinkai/Full Contact Karate.

It's also be cool if he wasn't Japanese.

I would love to see how Capoeira would work in the VF world to bad the art is now known as "Like Eddie Gordo or Christie Montero from tekken?" whenever I bring it up...

I don't know enough random fighting styles to say what style I'd like. So car sega has been good to me. I wanted a fast grapler they gave me el blaze. I wanted another fast evasive character like kage and they gave me eileen. I wouldn't mind another evasive character with quick moves that do a lil more dmg and isn't quite as light, also having a solid throw game wouldn't be bad either.

A kicking based character would be cool too.

Boxing is also nice and I'd like to see a true boxer in the mix since that is a proven effective art form.

If that happens, it would be interesting to see how SegaAM2 would incorporate the /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif button into the character's movelists /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Maybe similarly like Steve Fox in tekken who has no real kicks. Instead the kick buttons make him sway like Brad. (He only has like two kick attacks and they arent 'proper', like stepping on opponents toes)

    Word /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Anyway we finns dont have a historical 'own' fighting style so I guess Im a bit more open. TBH I cant think of anything that would fit in anymore without being blatant.. Although I remember going "oh nooo" when I first heard about Brad.. Now he has blended in prefectly..

Jiu-Jitsu would be nice, although Im afraid it would mix up too much with either Vanessa or Goh. Boxing might be passable as long as the character design was good enough.. I like Steve Fox. But he might interlap too much with Brad.

Lastly remember its not as much about 'fighting style', all fighters have their 'own' style more or less. There are no pure practicioners of the art in fighting games..

They're close enough to be recognisable, even if (say) Brad lacks a few signature kicks, he's still obviously a muai-thai/kickboxer.

After the last two little people they'd need a heavier character. A mid or heavy boxer would be good, but a little predictable maybe? TKD is also a style that's been rather lacking from the franchise, practically every fighting game has one of those guys.

After AM2 wheeled out a full monkey fist character I have no idea what to expect anymore though...

I'm still all for Silat, that'd probably end up being a stance based character like Lei Fei...

I'd be most for a Dutchman though, regardless of style, even if he has to carry around a ball of cheese, wear frikkin' wooden shoes and a farmer's flat cap with a bleedin' tulip print (add a windmill miniature for flavour). For a victory pose he could just jam his thumb up your arse... ^_^
