I completely agree but would you mind goin' into detail? I don't really know any of the technical aspects of DOA even though to be honest there was a time where I was DOAU2 and DOA3 were the only fighting games I played.

I would have to say the biggest issue with the game overall was the way they implemented the stun system. It used to be that once you were stunned, the options of how you could be effectively damaged were limited to a few choices. This worked well, because when stunned you would always know what the most damaging setups were that you had to watch out for and be prepared to counter, while keeping in mind countering itself was very risky as there was a huge timing window to throw someone in a counter stance. In DOA4 they changed things so once you became stunned you could be poked again and again for damage as long you couldn't randomly counter your way out of it. To make matters worse, random countering was really encouraged by the fact that the counter window was so short you hardly had time to throw someone on reaction if they countered, which means you had to guess when they were going to counter, which only encouraged more randomness and bullshit.

Another problem was the ground game. They implemented a forced wakeup feature that made it possible to trade damage for the opportunity to prevent a wake up kick and to be able to keep attacking from an advantage after the other person got up. That really ruined the flow of matches, because if someone was good at leveraging this technique it took a fair amount of luck to regain initiative once you lost it. It also didn't help that some characters had much better forced wakeup setups than others. If their setups were good enough they could easily roll over you like a steamroller, without ever having to do a move that would put them at a disadvantage.

And yes, yet another problem was poor character balance. No DOA has been perfect in this respect, but DOA4 was particularly bad. And despite many promises, they never released a patch to correct the issue. I know they did release a patch early on that fixed the worst of the balance problems, but there was a much bigger overhaul that had been promised on several occasions, and yet never delivered. As it stands, there are a number of character (mainly the ninjas) who are seriously overpowered. It's not so bad that it's impossible to win with the lower tier characters, but it's obvious the odds are stacked against you.

Those are the biggest problems as I see it, but there were plenty of other issues to choose from. Even down to the fact that the netcode on DOA4 was actually worse than the code from DOAU, which was released years earlier. The bottom line is, DOA4 was somewhat of a rushed mess that Team Ninja put out the meet the Xbox 360 launch window. But they set some really bad precedents for the series moving forward, and I'm not sure if it will ever recover.

    * nods with approval *

There were definitely more things that ruin the game, but this sums up the major issues nicely. Honestly if they had just rebalanced the game, fixed the stun and broken counter system the game would have been GREAT!

What I hated the most about the game more than anything was that guessing right meant nothing for a lot of low tier characters, which unfortunately is what I played the most because I didn't like any of the ninjas. The way the game was designed it encouraged people to spam counter attack upon getting hit by anything because the recovery window was so small. What was the pisser was that the recovery window from a counter was small, but the active window for counters was very large. I can't tell you how many times I knew someone was going to counter, wait for it and then attack clearly after it was over and still get counter... WTF!!!!!!

Thanks... I definitely recognize most of those issues and then Tecmo didn't even bother to fix any of them in that joke game Dimensions.

Good write up Xyz987x - I agree with everything you said.

@Rod tell me about the multiple random counters lol!! and People Chided me because i thought 3 was far superior. I had a friend who was good but he could'nt beat me in 3 that much but then in 4 he felt unstoppable..thats when i knew it was kinda easier to let randomness get over. Even my friends who did'nt play DOA told me.. if he can beat you in this game doing that then you know its bullshit lol!!

DOAD is basically DOA4... I'm upset that Tecmo feels there's nothing that needs to be changed, but the actual players feel that it needs an overhaul altogether, even after they were interviewed by a real top DOA player... I personally enjoyed the Japanese version of 3.1, as I saw things in there that made it way better than simple 3.0, especially the movement in the game... One thing's for sure, you can't really play DOA4 with a 3.0, 3.1, or even a 2U mindset...

I'm so against those stupid random danger zones... The game itself shouldn've have to help the player win by throwing a monkey wrench in my game if I've got the lead and my momentum is going strong... Dodging a raptor or a car doesn't work well at all in this game I feel... Plus they need to fix the stage reset... If I lost a match to an izuna drop and we're on the next floor, the match should continue at the new area, and not magically reset back to the top...

I haven't played DOA at a competitive level,

but I have been reading forever about doa game system, and came to the conclusion that in fact, INTENTIONALLY, tecmo does not want a VF~like game. they want it to be loose and they want beginner lever players to still be able to put up a fight with intermediates and advanced. DOA is just DOA in this respect.

the reason its so hard as a VF player to wrap your head around this is that the game is sooo similar to VF, its polished to death and animation-wise is cool as fuck. but it just wont play the same! I wonder if you guys see some kind of parallel between ninja gaiden and DOA. i dont. NG is tight as fuck, the very opposite of doa?

Well I would hope everyone sees a difference because they are 2 completely different genres.

I understand what you are getting at though, because when I do play DOA VF minded it only gets me so far. If I play mindless though without hesitation and ignoring frames I tend to get much farther. Why does this work? I have no clue. It really boggles my mind that if you apply rules and logic you lose, but if you throw out the rules and play mindlessly especially with a ninja you can run sets like a god.

You definitely have to ignore frames alot of times I feel, especially since most of the leave you in the negative on many occassions. I'm not even talking about "zeroing the playfield" negative. I mean you can practically be punished by something, and the ONLY option to "stay safe" is to hold and pray that its the right one to counter the attack... 3.1 fixed that though...

I'm not to fond of the stepping options in the game as well... Sure DOA has a "Korean step", but it in no way really shows any sense of defense imo... It's qcb all day, and it only takes you back slightly further than it would had you just did back back, and you can still get hit by whatever move your opponent was doing...

I still can't believe that the ninjas simply have the best moves hands down... I mean Helena and Jann Lee have some stuff up their sleeve, but even still, it doesn't touch the movelist of a ninja, and the properties...

Yeah you're right some characters' counter holds suck... Ninjas can combo off of theirs easily... /sigh

It would be nice if they listened to their fans and implement the DOA 3.1 system instead of just building on DOA4.

Alot of people were asking about that, but the Team Ninja reps were saying that they felt there was nothing wrong with the game. Having that mindset will repel players away, because that pretty much means you aren't willing to make any changes unless YOU see fit.

Well, regardless of that, it would be nice if there was a better backdash at least.

I've got a strong feeling that its gonna be even more "accessible"...

Hopefully Mr. Wah and the guys at freestepdodge.com write up a petition of some sort. It would be nice to see Team Ninja respond positively.

There's a series of questions at Freestepdodge.com that have been submitted to TN.

I don't necessarily subscribe to the idea of "go back to 3.1 and everything will be great". They still have to advance the game and implement NEW ideas.

They can take the best elements from all the games so far, take in a little of the methodology of VF for character moveset depth and tight control, and learn from SF how to build a community.

I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't buy DOA5... there was a dark time when DOAU and DOA3 were the only fighting games I played.

Yeah that's more of what I meant. Not just simply implementing 3.1 and calling it a day, but obviously beefing the game up with new things without dumbing the game down... I'm just saying that the movement in 3.1 was the best they've ever come up with imo...

I like DOA alot but it's a pretty scrubby fighter. Within a month I achieved a SS, and managed to pull off an upset win on the #1 online player, and some others.. I had never played the series before either. That being said i'd buy a DOA5 if it came out before VF5FS, I probably wouldn't after though. Too much of my time will be going into FS once it finally drops..

Great news! The game I feel is the closest cousin to Virtua Fighter is also returning in 2012.

So pleased my two favourite fighters are both getting new versions

    Here's the key visual:

The game will be out in 2012 and was referred to as "Fighting Entertainment"

There was a clip apparently but its not up anywhere yet. Will edit in later.
