I didn't like the community. I came from DOA to VF. I thought the mechanics felt largely incomplete and invariably boring in every exchange. It's a very pretty series though and the stages are incredible.

I prefer it to SC at any rate. I'll buy it and I'll play it.

I don't think just because not every top tier character was a ninja (just most of them) is a reason to call the game balanced. And even though Offbeat Ninja did do well playing Ein in DOA4, he had an unconventional style that involved exploiting some very powerful setups and turtling like there was no tomorrow. If he would have tried going all out on offense like the ninjas are capable of, I'm guessing he would not have done so well.

Its ridiculous to say because a player had an unconventional style (he didn't, good defense is not unconventional) that if it trumps top tiers it doesn't count. If the other characters were so OP he wouldn't have had the consistent results that he did.

Look a little further at 2007 when Black Mamba won with Helena, the person who came second wasn't playing a ninja, it was SkatanMilla with Kokoro. Middle tier.

The argument that "ninjas are top, game is unbalanced" is flawed. It has tiers, but the spread is fairly even and the middle and top have a reasonably close variance, probably second only to Virtua Fighter.

"The Ninjas" is really code for "Hayabusa", the strongest character, but it really is one character and can be dealt with.

They have a better base to work with than people give credit.

Berzerk, you're starting to sound like a DOA apologist. The game has more than tiers. Its not like one character is better in one situation than the rest. Its that some characters are better than ALL characters in MOST situations. Shit, Kasumi has a low punch that is an instant crouch, a combo starter w/ built-in mixup, and causes critical stun on CH. Thats a busted move. Period.

If the game does have tiers, its more like "all the broken characters" in S rank, everyone else in C. But despite that I still really love the game. I just dont find it very valid in tournaments. And saying a game is balanced because its tournies are won by a spectrum of characters doesnt hold water. That would mean that tekken is only slightly more unbalancex than VF. Tournaments are won by players, not characters. More popular chars will appear at more tournies.

Im not attacking DOA, its fine in its own right.

    DOA in a Nutshell.

Make the wrong guess under attack = - 1 step back.
Make the wrong guess under attack again = 5 steps back.

Use a Ninja = 8 out of 10 possible situations eliminated.
Use any other female other than a Ninja = 6 of 10 possible situations eliminated.

Knowing that you have no advantages in period in amatch against anybody = Enough to make me a spectator.

Like the game in all but its just a novelty.

And that, is why we can't have conversations about things on the internets.

I don't know about you guys, but I really enjoyed DOA4 before all the broken stuff was found. Here is to hoping they fix the counter system and stun game. But based on what that small teaser showed it looks like they fixed NOTHING!!!!!!!!! A lot of moves still look like even after blocking the window to cut in seems neigh and that's disappointing.

Take the part where Hayato does his scissor kick flip move to sweep to some shoulder like move. If you look closely it looks like he recovered instantly and they let Hayabusa's next attack hit for the sake of choreographing a fight between the 2 of them. I can only hope that while this is still in beta this issue with the ninjas having next to zero recovery on their moves will seriously be fixed.

anyway, fixed or not I'm sure I will buy the game and play it. Hopefully I can get a full year out of it like I did with DOA4 before players find the broken shit that makes you shake your head in disgust.

    I'm sure they'll have tag.

The only reason they'd take out tag at this point is for technical limitations. With all the crazy stuff in the background on that video, I'm sure tag will once again be restricted to certain arenas. Fine with that.

The stun system could use an overhaul though. Its not uncommon to be put in stuns that are 60+ frames long, and you can be stunned AGAIN during the first stun. Then there's the "fast fall" option. I say "fall" because "recovery" isn't the right word. You don't recover from the hit faster, you get your ass to the safety of the ground faster. Odd defensive option.

I think the issue may be that once you've been counter hit (and thus, stunned) your only option is to either fall down as fast as possible (and get stomped) or go for a reversal. The reversal only gives you (the defender) a 25% chance for success, and if you get thrown then there's a 0% chance of escape plus you take 33% more damage. Characters like Kasumi and Gen can keep someone stunned for the entire round really easily because they have single-hit stuns that don't push.

Really all that DOA needs is for ONE pro fighting gamer to attempt to balance the game. Start by balancing the system (reversals, throws, throw BREAKS, tech rolls, environment damage, damage scaling, etc) THEN balance individual character move properties and move sets. If a character has a 16f mid punch that causes major stun on CH, don't also give them a 16f mid kick with the same properties. Make the guessing game more strategy than luck. Its like in VF with throw breaks, no character has every direction to break (except Van, technically), and no one has 3 directions to break that all do max damage. There's less guessing in VF than people think, and I believe that's where some of the balance comes from.

Who's next up for Theory Fighter 4: The Wasting of Time Hyper Forum Battle Champion Edition?

Hmm...this reminds me of an old, old post WCMaxi made about beating team ninja at DoA2 or something. Basically the stuns were so long that you could force a really braindead and safe 50/50. Is this still true?

    Here's part of the announcement

    But... why??? AND HOW?!?

Yes, but its not quite as braindead, and its in NO WAY safe. But instead of being 50/50, its more like 25/75 in favor of the attacker. That 25% you get it wrong will deal you a fair amount of damage though. I think thats why reversals in DOA4 cause so much damage.

Fun fact: Another reason ninjas are broken is because some of their reversals deal no damage but set up huge juggles! Yay ninjas!

WCMaxi's strategy was just to crouch dash into Ein's 33K or 33F+P. One is a high-damaging throw, the other a launcher.

Team NINJA doesn't know how to play its own game, that's been proven for awhile. Additionally, that happened back in 1996 I believe. A lot's changed since then.

I remember a friend of mine debunking the "strategy" that in fact there were 15 ways to beat the strategy.

This is why I wish DOA3.1 made it stateside, but that game's mechanics are lost on Team NINJA.

    Here's the google cache: http://webcache.googleusercontent.c...or+Alive+5"+Move+IGN&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

Must be redacted as Andriasang removed the article, probably because it was meant for Ninja Gaiden 3

Lol. Move for Ninja Gaiden makes much more sense than DOA.
