DSLRs will be just too much for Rod (on his budget and what he's looking for now). The G11 (as well as it's competition) is a perfect transition from a point and shoot.

Here are cameras similar to the Canon G11:
    Olympus E-P1
    Lumix DMC-GF1
    Panasonic/Lumix DMC-LX3

    Hi guys,

Anyone know where to get a simple camera like a Sony Cybershot DSC-w290 cheaper than the retail price of $179? Like a site such as overstock.com or some site which has coupons for it, etc?

Guys thank you so much for pitching in info on all these cameras. All of it is greatly appreciated. I think I'm going to go with the Cannon G11 that Monchie recommended.

Thanks bro! I'm sure I will love it. I haven't purchased it yet, but I'm shopping around for prices. I'll most likely order one on Friday or Saturday after I look at prices / shipping etc.

    Again thanks guys!

Unless you have a need to buy a camera right away, I would wait a few months for this years models to come out. This is the year that many small digital cameras will feature the ability to record 720/1080p movie footage. Instead of recording crappy quality 30fps, 640x480 movies, you'll get crappy quality 30fps, 1280x720/1920x1080 movies from your camera. [IMG]

I have a discontinued, Samsung NV24HD that can take 30fps 1280x720 footage and the movies actually come out quite good. The pictures have a little blue tint to them, so I wouldn't recommend this 2 yr old camera. If you wait a few months, the next generation of compact cameras should be able to take both amazing pictures and movies.

Here is a sample of 720p footage from the NV24HD.

    <object width="560" height="340"> <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/S90SPIUJ8r0"></param> <param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param> <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/S90SPIUJ8r0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="560" height="340"> </embed></object>

After you click play, click the 720p You Tube resolution option, next to the volume control. You should see a huge difference in quality.

Here is the movie mode of the Canon Ixus 120 IS HD/PowerShot SD 940 IS Digital Elph.

    <object width="560" height="340"> <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/lukzOICydS0"></param> <param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param> <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/lukzOICydS0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="560" height="340"> </embed></object>

Same instructions, click 720p to see the HD footage. You can see that Canon has well saturated and high contrast color.

The movie mode of the G11 should produce similar footage to clicking 480p with the movie above. Canon IMO makes the best all around compact digital camera. I threw out the information above, since I guess you'll take some movie captures down the line with your new camera.

oh wow... Thanks Kun! I really want a camera, but I can hold out for a bit if you think it will be worth it. I'm sold on the G11 for now, but I'll try and hold out as long as I can.

The video quality you posted is pretty amazing and is about what I would want out of the camera I choose. However, if video quality has to be sacrificed for better pictures then I'm all with that.

Thanks again! Oh and cute dog... I didn't know you were a dog person.

do take into account that theses cameras only take like 10 minutes of HD video...

Depends on the memory with the G11...but i get your point that the cameras mentioned in this thread are not meant to replace video cams.

They are mainly designed for photography with a video capabilities.
