I remember reading that article or something similar. It was way back in the late 90's. Somewhere around '96-'97-'98... I can't pin point the year exactly. I think it was either EGM or Gamepro magazine.

Yep. I'm sure looking at the graphics now, he was probably thinking it would have been leaps and bounds better.

(I do remember that interview though, because when he said that, my head screamed "NOOOO!!! ONLY TWO MORE??!!?!!". Lol.)

There was a VF5 preview in an old EDGE magazine where the developer said that in short, VF4 was the perfect fighting game, and not much could have been added to the fighting. I think with VF5 they implemented VF TV and other tools to make it easier for people to spectate VF5 matches. they said "it was like developing 3 games instead of one".

I think the reason that VF5 was so similar to VF4 is because they had so much on their hands that the creative side of things ws stretched thin, and they made up for this with R. I mean, now that they have the infrastructure already in place, they can focus on redesigning the movelist etc ect.

Regarding photorealism, I guess back in 1998 they believed by now we would have reached photorealism... but we havent unfortunately. Sega will surely blow us away with the next VF when they release it on the next generation of consoles...

    More food for though:

I estimate VF5 software with the Lindberg Universal Cabinet in a Versus setup, brand new, cost an arcade operator $15,000.

In Japan gamers would have to play 15,000 games at 100 yen per game to recover the cost of only the hardware purchase.

In USA gamers would would have to play 30,000 games at 0.50 per game games to recover the hardware cost.

In China gamers would have to play 214,286 games at 0.07 per game to recover the hardware cost.

If you could get a setup for half the cost today, it would still be a challenge for an operator to recover their cost. This is why I believe 5 was removed from most arcades so quickly. Arcade operators were eager to sell used instead of taking the full loss from buying a setup.

What sales figures are you looking at? VF5 was at 97,000 sold on the famitsu top 500 for '07. That's in a genre where big games sell million+
Valkyria, by contrast, was at 141,000 sold in the famitsu top 500 for '08. That's in a genre where big games sell maybe quarter million. Sega has a chance to make their money back on valkyria, especially with the anime, toys, etc. Not so much on VF5.

If you think western sales of those two games are relevant, you haven't been paying attention to the announcement of sonic ballsack racing.

Well, technically , when Sega tallied the sales of Iron Man, they combined Wii, DS, PSP, PS3, PS2, 360 sales. So VF5 sales would tally including both PS3 and 360 sales, which it's safe to say exceed 141,000. Thats neither here nor there , Sega still has time to Do VF5r. Sony has started a fund to help finance PSN games, maybe VF5R could be digitally distributed that way. If Virtua On OT can get a second chance on XBL (yes !!! I was so pissed when they cut the online vs from the DC version). Anything is possible. Its just a matter of time.

It was'nt that it was stretched thin. He probably did'nt want to take elements from other games as a selling point. I remember i always said Tekken has like these unrealistic frame speed and juggles hen when VF4 came out Yu implemented the same things.

Looking at R now he implemented Tekkens down bounce for more flashier Combo's and DOA's Wall hit crumples. He had no choice but to implement a little fantasy.

Yu Suzuki didn't implement anything in VF5R.

In VF, the bounce combos first showed up in VF5... and he didn't work on that either.

as much as i'd love to see R on console, there's not much i can say. vf5 even coming to consoles to begin with was indeed a gift and i totally thank their efforts regardless.

i can't hate on sega even if they don't release R. i still remember the day when i received my PS3 VF5 and HORI in the mail and i flipped out. great times.

it was fun. long live sega no matter what.

You right THEY meaning whomever it was behind the scene. As far as R goes the down bounce a La Tekken 6 is what im talking about. regardless of what they still implemented it to keep up with todays standards. Yes i Want R but there plenty others to hold me over to whenever it drops. VF5 is not the greatest fighting game there is... its just one them.

I've waited for vf5 and i can wait for R. It will come.

Even with DMPK and other design choices I dislike in VF5, it is still, imo, the best fight game ever when you factor online into the equation.

I want R bad, but I will live without it if I must.

If VF5R does not come here than so be it.. I will still play on my PS3 and train hard to become good and maybe in the future play in tournaments.

The only reason VF5 doesn't sell here is not many gamers like fighting games that much anymore.. Its all FPS and RPG games now. Such as Gears OF War, Halo, Killzone 2, Socom etc.... Nobody In Canada except one person I know likes VF5 but he doesn't play it anymore. I own the PS3 version so no online.. It blows but I still play anyways.. I am not buying a 360 and an Online subscrition when I have to pay monthly for it when the quality of Online isn't any better (Not ment to start a console war so please do not flame).

Not sure you should be speaking for all of Canada /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif But, in Toronto (although none of us live in the city anymore) we still play -- not as often as we used to. But, we are still around and always will be.

To keep on topic -- I still hope for a console release of R. I think it's unlikely though.

They will release Sonic and friends bowling before they release VF5R.

All joking aside I still believe in VF5R, and if the people over at namco want me to buy there precious Tekken 6 then they can just wait till I hear an anouncement for VF5R or just wait till Tekken 6 hits 20 bucks, and just play a friends copy.

I say we petition to Namco. I'd bet Konjou's Nutz on it that we get VF5R in a week and with some Hentai dressing on the side.
