That's a good point Brian. Hopefully we'll have a tourney then, but if not I would surely support another fantastic Socal event.

Oh snap, crackle, pop. Plague that's a fucking insane idea. We should have a VF5 opening party!! FOB skills from everyone, plus we can learn the game around each other.

I am so down. I imagine most people can plan around the release date for a tournament.

sounds like I touched some kind of nerve with you...

Specifically, I was talking about Evo 2k5, the first one in Vegas. While I realize that Vegas isn't really easy for anyone, and VF was put into the category of games that people had to vote for, the fact is that the people promoting Evo put VF as the first game in the little video they made to promote the "vote for" games, and I always thought that said a lot.

Seems like the momentum got lost when people couldn't decide whether we should just play Evo, or try to get FT set-ups to Vegas because Japanese players wouldn't want to play Evo. I think we were never able to get out of this quagmire, so the focus to merely make to tourney happen and make sure the game was there got lost.

My point was that VF has been welcome at Evo (afaik) since 2k3, and that year and 2k4 did a lot for our scene, especially in terms of exposure. All the people that have helped to hold VF-centric events since get the tip of my hat, as do those people from other communities (like the V-tyme people most recently) who invite Vf players to their events. I'd merely like to see VF return to Evo, in any form, since it's the biggest tourney in the US. I think we shouldn't worry about what Japanese players'd like, and have a tourney for Western fans. This'll really be true in VF5's case, where they'll have had a year lead on everyone else in the world.

Even though I can't play VF seriously anymore because of my baby & work, I still care about the scene, and I'd like to see VF fans get out and mingle w/ the rest of the fighting game community more. I can't think of one VF-centric event where people were invited to play another game, but the reverse is true many times over.

If there's going to be another big Socal event, why not try inviting the DOA or Tekken players to play their games, just to see what happens. I know that some of the DOA4 heads are going to AI this week...

I pretty much agree with this sentiment. We've been scratching and gnawing for a decent scene, and Devolucion was an example of what could happen.

I was just venting btw. I hate having to be dependent on oustide factors to enjoy our scene.

I didn't think we were? IIRC, the split between FT and Evo wasn't because of Japanese player preference, but due to the fact that the two largest VF communities in the US, LA and NYC, were on FT whereas the rest were still on Evo.

I mean, at the last Evo2k we attended, FT was already released (albeit only just) but Japanese players still came to play and compete on Evolution.

Hear hear, and hopefully what should continue to happen. On many levels I think Devo was better than any Evo2k I attended and hopefully has set the standard for future major events in North America.

I dont think forgetting about EVO would be smart.

As much as DEVO was awesome EVO is a very well known tournament in the fighting game community. The more exposure the better for VF.

i really think that VF5 is SEGAs chance to breakthrough to a worldwide audience. They just need to promote VF5 like crazy... the interest is there, but we all know SEGA hasnt done in smart moves for quite a while. So the chances of that is nil
