Do DonPachi dai oh jou is pretty cool, but I'm waiting for Border Down and RType Final.

I played Border Down at GameJam - rather disappointing. It has some good ideas that are held back by some really bad ones. (Getting killed will send you to an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT SECTION OF THE STAGE! BRILLIANT!) It's not even half the game that Blazing Star (high almighty shooter king) is.

For those interested in r-type final, here are links to a full video of the first stage (split into 3 parts)

Actually looks a little disappointing to me - only playtime will tell, but seems like style over substance.

As for the fighting game community vs shmup community, I'd generally agree w triple lei. However, the shmuppers have their share of forum cock-waving as well - somebody left the shmupsforum in a huff after a mod changed all mentions of "FPS" to "FPShite" /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

    GTO kicks, you're the best.

Anyone know the name to this old old konami shooter where the 1st player ship is blu and 2nd player ship is pink. The ships have legs and arms and throws grenades at the ground.. I loved that game, wish they made a new one. Anyways, to Triple Lei: Ikaruga is just one of the fine shooters I've played... if anything, I'd have to mention gunstar heroes as one of the better shooters... I'm not being specific, my statements were just examples to illustrate my point... so you don't have to pinpoint anything.

Sorry I meant Pop N Twinbee.
Rainbow bell adventure was its platformer sequel.

Pop N Twinbee rocked! I remember I used to play 2 player mode by myself and have the ships connect to get better shooting, hehe... I didn't do that all the time though... /versus/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Twinbee is fun, I like it the best out of all Konami's shooters. If you can find Twinbee Deluxe pack cheap, buy it. The older game on the disc sucks, but Twinbee Yahoo is loads of fun, despite being pretty short.

There's several twinbee games in Japan, some of which were arcade- and others which were console-exclusive. There's also an anime and drama series based on it. For some reason Konami seems to be letting the series rot lately, along with other great properties. Argh.

So true - shooterdom has a good share of idiocy as well. Which is why I tend not to frequent shooter-centric sites despite being a fan of the genre. Every time I hear somebody whine that DoDonPachi 2 isn't REALLY DDP because it wasn't exclusively Cave-developed, I want to punch them. Hard. And let's not forget all the high score/I AM TEH L33TEST wankers. Sure, high score competition is fun, but don't let it get to your head...

Speaking of rotting series, and sorry to be off-topic, anyone played Konami's Penguin Adventure on the MSX? How about Konami's Knightmare 1 & 2 (Maze of Galious)? Those were Excellent games, and I would personally love to see a new Penguin. Maze of Galious, though, would be so similar to Castlevania now with all the castle exploration and weapons and upgrades.

Kinda on-topic, I also liked Konami's Nemesis shooting series on the MSX too (Along with Salamandar, which I am not sure made by whom)....

    The memories..................... /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

GALAGA is the shit. I love galaga. I know, I know. It's too easy. It's really old. It's the same thing over and over again & Defender was way cooler back in the dizzay. I don't care. GALAGA ROCKS!

Hey, man, anybody who really loves shooters knows the best games were from the classic era. Galaga, Asteroids, Defender, Robotron -- now those games rock, because they rely on skill, and not pattern memorization.

Of course, I dig a lot of shooters, especially from the 16-bit era, like the Thunder Force series and Fire Shark and Twin Cobra and Gaiares and whatever Treasure puts out. But there's something better about those old games. Being good at them is just more impressive to me. Just my own two cents.

The fact that the "FPS" thing can even be cited proves it's an isolated incident.

And as for that "big-headed high scorer" thing... um... are you sure you're not just making that up? I haven't seen it anywhere at TNL or shmups.com. Surely no one dedicated enough to reach those scores is childish enough do so... and of course no one in Japan is like that... /versus/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

On another note, I'm going to update my article to include some really big quote. I, uh, hope I don't I need anyone's permission. /versus/images/graemlins/tongue.gif It's near the bottom of the page, by cigsthecat.

The only good point he makes is: <font color="orange">"I hate not being able to move at my own pace."</font>

As for the rest of the review, it seems like he's just unwilling to give the game a chance because it's not 3D. I've personally never played it, but it seems like he's giving ridiculous reasons to hate it.
