You can use a gameshark...but it involves a tiny bit of messing around with the PS2 tray.

If Evo is on DVD then it becomes harder to do that unless you get a modchip that directly boots everything, including backups(Which makes it illegal). But if it's on CD, you can buy the original import and make a backup yourself, but you will still need one of the older modchips and a booter like Gameshark or Code Breaker or whatever /versus/images/icons/smile.gif.

In case anyone's interested, I recently spoke to someone who had the chance to play an early version of PS2 Evo. He said that by and large the jagged edges from the last version are gone, and the graphics look substantially better than the previous version (although still sub-arcade, of course). He also encountered the vs. matches for items.

What did your friend think of the textures? The polygon count seems higher from what I've seen of the clips but it's the textures that matter in my opinion.

Well, he didn't comment on that specifically. IMO the textures themselves in the original PS2 version weren't so bad (aside from strange changes like Akira's skin texture or the greasy Jeffry/Vanessa); but the anti-alaising distorted them in places where you couldn't see them. In that version the textures on the items seemed to suffer more than anything.

I use a component video cable with my PS2, and if I go to the character edit screen with Sarah, the textures on her pants look really great, they just look shitty around the edges.

Even so, the arcade will always look better since it can run on a monitor. I've seen Evo running on a monitor and running on a nice TV with a video converter outputting to s-video, and the difference is pretty notice-able.

personally, I don't really give a shit. I don't expect the PS2 graphics to wow me at all after I've seen Evo running on a high res monitor, so I'm happy just to get to enjoy all the gameplay extras.

Spotlite and I are in agreement.
When I tell people that VF4 has far higher quality textures then T4 and that its textures (all on PS2 off course)equel or better those of SC2 they look at me strangely.
On a technical level they are tough they get distorted by the picture output.

There's an option nobody else mentioned, which pretty much costs about 1 dollar and is relatively risk-free. Use the knife swap trick.
Download the japanese evo one it becomes available on warez channels.
Use ps2patcher to patch the CD image so that it will (almost) run on an american PS2. Burn this image to a blank CD.
Then boot with a gameshark, stick a knife or something else thin into the PS2 to pop out the CD tray without the PS2 knowing.
Finally pop in the CD and put the tray back in place.
You can then play your burned japanese CD. The knife part isn't hard, but it's a hassle and the first few times you do it you might feel nervous about rooting around in the PS2 with a sharp object.

I violently recommend you buy the US copy once it's out, not just because it's easier than booting and swapping, but also because sega deserves your cash /versus/images/icons/smile.gif

    Definitely Sega deserves the cash.

But on the burning note, lucky bastards like me who have a DVD burner will be able to burn the game on disc, but since the game is on DVD format now, and not CD, I doubt the warez guys will be able to get it to fit on a 700MB cd.

Where are these warez channels Creed? I'm not planning on bootlegging vfevo (I agree, Sega really deserves the cash), but I'm dying to try "Victorious Boxers" I think the name is. My friends get copied games by the scores, but they never tell me where they get them from.

Personally I'd rather purchase stuff, unless it's an import or a dreamcast game.

I found out about the VF4 burn by hanging out on VFhome around the time it was released (when VF4 was released)... I think someone pointed me to a web page or FTP site rather than an IRC channel. I don't really know all the good irc iso channels, though there are a ton.
