And the difference being? Not much when you come down to it....those who were controlling the soilders did not want to surrender...and since they had control, who gives a crap what anybody else wanted to do? The emperor ONLY wanted to surrender after the first nuke.

    Re: WWII

Even after the second atomic weapon was dropped, there was an attempted military coup of the Japanese government by certain military officers when they found out that Japan was going to surrender. Japan was losing, and had been losing for a while, but many officers were of the 'we will never surrender' mentality. One effect of the dropping of the atomic weapon was to prove that it would be much more costly to the Japanese to continue to resist than it would be to the Americans. Most of their defense strategies counted on favorable attrition rates, and when it was made clear that this was not going to be feasible, many more top level officers decided to surrender.

Anybody see Barak Obama's speech at the convention? He has come out of nowhere to become big star for the Democrats.

We could use a black president (but not a little bitch like Colin Powell).

And that ultimately saved more american and japanese lives than would a land invasion...lets also not forget the Japanese attacked us first, which was their first mistake...they really could never of won due to the fact they had a rather small industrial base....but maybe we should start a 2nd wwII thread?

    Why Iraq?

Here's a great article in the Guardian on one fellow's views of the real reasons for the Iraq war. Most of this is stuff I knew, but I have to say that I did not realize that Hussein was trying to sell oil for Euros. The fact that the world oil trade is done in $ really is the reason why we have had insane fiscal polices during Reagan and Bush years, running up huge deficits without sufferring a Latin American stly financial collapse. Check it out:
