I can't stand the decompression of japanese storytelling. But there are exeptions. I loved samurai Champloo and just started Cowboy Bepop. Also watched all of Naruto (except the filers) but wow does it suck lately.

I blame the japanese and their storytelling but decompression in American comics too, ugh.

I used to be quite into animes in the late 90s. Although I enjoyed quite a few (Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, KareKano, and the classic movies) I think nothing compared to Neon Genesis Evangelion, at least IMO...

haha yeah who doesn't love bible black seriously.

I'd be lying if I didn't say dbz, I still watch the last cell fights every once in a while and it really got me into the whole genre. Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop (that guy better make another anime,) Bleach, Naruto shippuuden (though if they keep dragging stuff out I'm going to have to start hating on it.) Death Note had a great story that really kept me in for the long haul. Record of Lodoss War. Evengelion the list goes on

    You can watch manga?

    ----
    Manga is better because:

    1. Exactly how the creator made it
    2. No shit voice work
    3. Requires imagination (for color, sound, voices, etc.)
    4. Unlike anime, manga doesn't need to tell you everything that has happened up to that point in the series every single fucking episode.
    5. The artwork is always better because it is drawn by an artist (okay, I admit most manga "artists" suck ass and could come up with an original style for once) and not a sweat shop.
    6. No stupid fucking theme songs
    7. Will not be the rave with dumbasses in the states because people don't like reading (yay elitism).
    8. I have yet to see a "filler" episode (unlike "whatever shit is popular now")

Manga > Anime (though I must say, most manga is fucking shit and almost most every anime is worse [yeah for recycled poses and cliché characters!])

Suggestion for an anime: Seirei no Moribito.

    Really good series.

All great mangas. BotI remains my favorite though (but in all fairness I havn't read much manga.)

Really don't watch much anime anymore, and only watched select series/movies when I watched it frequently. Of that though, Cowboy Bebop (Series and movie alike) is top tier. Samurai Champloo. Hellsing was pretty good. While not as good as the manga, Berserk is still awesome. Samurai X OVAs were good, can't really say the same for the series but like a sucker I did like some of it lol.

I'd agree with Sebo on his Manga vs Anime argument but there's some cases when that theory fails horribly. Cowboy Bebop wouldn't be half as good without the music. Samurai Champloo, same case, but the quality of animation is amazing, and I find both had great voice acting (JPonry for Sam Cham). Berserk, I actually liked animated, but the story didn't continue /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif whack. And I really liked the intro/dvd menu songs of Berserk and Hellsing.

The worst part about Anime is that, as soon as you admit to liking it, people size you up for being some sort of uber nerd lol. But in the end, fk em, you like what you like.

Samurai Champloo was original animation, it wasn't based off a manga. I think Cowboy Bebop was the same deal, not based off manga.

Susumu Hirasawa, I will admit did some great work for Berserk and it's later video games. From a broader prespective Berserk is a good anime, however the epic quality of the manga makes it look like crap. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Yeah, sorry I implied that. Just saying, to me, it would be better than a manga version. (For Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop). CB does have a manga now though to compare.

Don't read the Bebop manga, believe me, don't...
Got the first two books for 3€ a piece at a market and still think it was a waste of money (definately a waste of space).

My favorite manga (by far) is Say Hello to Black Jack. It's not being translated in America though... As far as I know the Dutch and French versions (by the same Belgian company btw) are the only ones out there apart from the original. SHtBJ caused quite a stir in Japan and had the medical world there cry foul high and low as it deals directly with the things that are wrong about the Japanese medical system.

Fave anime? Hmmm, tough call. Noir probably, there's a lot going on in every episode off screen and I felt like there was a lot of thought behind the lot of it, literary references tend to make sense instead of being chucked in for shits and giggles and the moral of the story is usually not thrown in your face but left to you to figure out. I think it's one of the best series to try and puzzle out. Even after things get explained there are still loose ends to figure out. Also has great music and you can see a lot of effort was put in making the locations feel authentic (the license plates match France for example), a lot of shows foul up by having some Japanese imagined version of Europe that fails on just about every level.

It's a hard show to recommend though as it is a masterpiece of decompression and repeats a certain sequence way too much, even if a few seconds are added every time it still gets old. Lastly the action scenes can get a bit weird with a little girl gunning down dozens of mobsters without taking a single hit. The lack of blood might also be strange to some. It might be my favorite but if I'd give it a grade I'd say 7.5/10

Another favorite for much the same reasons: Jin-Roh.

ps. I've read the first 16 (gn) issues of Blade of the Immortal and have to say I prefer Berserk really, more my kind of fantasy setting I guess, still great stuff though.

What's with all the love for berserk? I read vol1-28 or something back in the day, and admittedly enjoyed it for the most part. But still, it always felt like every couple volumes the plot would get too convoluted, and rather than bother resolving anything, they'd just kill off every character except the main one and start over... really unsatisfying.

I could echo most of the series already mentioned (gogo Noir), but I'll add a few new ones that I especially enjoyed: Elfen Lied, and Banner/Crest of the stars are both extremely good (though not similar, if you've only seen one). Black Lagoon was also great, and more in keeping with the action filled list so far. And last but not least, gundam wing... not really top tier, but I believe it's still the only anime I've seen that had the audacity to contain a war, and supply themes deeper than the omnipresent "WAR IS BAD!!!11one", every other gundam is notorious for being unable to make any other statements about the world.

    Bleach of course.

    Gintama.

Welcome to the NHK = too much truth for one series.

Nana was fun but shouldn't have been put to anime without commitment to the whole series.

s.CRY.ed, Blue Seed, Suzuka, Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, all things .hack, Evangelion of course (word of advice though, don't sit down to watch DVDs 4-8 in one sitting, there are narcotics that won't do THAT to you and are probably safer), Vandread, RahXephon...

I enjoy what I've seen of Love Hina and Full Metal Panic...

Could probably think of more but I've got to go to work soon...

I've never really been big on anime, I watched some Bleach but it died on me.

Frankly all the Japanophiles that infest the fighting game community turned me off of it.

Hokuto no Ken and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure are my two favourites, although I do like Bleach and Eyeshield 21. The mangas of those two are better, mainly because they don't have lousy filler in them, and they tend to take out large parts of the ES21 anime.

First off it's an epic fantasy with huge emphasis from classic books like Conan, and japanese takes like the Guin Saga. So yes it is long and some things will not be resolved till the end.

Also the only time they kill off characters that are focal to the story was once. Every other time was Guts defeating evil characters or extremely minor characters being killed in the onslaught.

I don't know how that equates to them starting over again multiple times. The story begins with Guts already past that scenario and the books between merely explain how he got there.

That's why I like Berserk, excellent story telling and plot. More importantly it really is like an epic fantasy rather than the traditional "fighting montage" style story that is typical is most Japanese manga and animes. There is rarely a reoccurring situation like I don't know "This guy is tougher than me so now I must train really hard in my hyperbolic time chamber to beat him in some overly hyped fight!"

Dbz, YuYu Hakasho, HunterXHunter, Naruto, and Bleach just don't stand up for me.
