I find that this game, and the ones prior to it, have zero appeal for me. In fact, I have some pretty deep and fundamental issues with the game, but I won't rain on this parade/thread! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

But in wanting to have an open mind, I would like to ask a question to you guys that enjoy the GTA series, and I suppose in particular, GTA4.

What appeals to you most about this game?

Re: GTA 4 - The countdown

I got it being I had some fun in the first two installments of the 3D versions. I have played maybe 45 minutes in, didn't get to give it too much of my time yet. So far I have seen nothing that really sets it apart from its predecessors. It obviously has much better graphics, lighting, etc..It also has some serious physics improvements. But the story and start of the game are nearly identical to the past. Starting out as a random loner, meeting some past friend and then continuing on the scarface path. This bugs me because people have said so much regarding the story and the fact that its so different from the previous games.

Given I have not played it nearly enough to make a true judgment on the story so far. But that is my opinion as of right now. I also have not played Multi-player which is said to be a fantastic experience so I look forward to that today.

You watched me use the mini-gun on the freeway into Vegas (San Andreas). I remember your "Holy shit" expression and exclamation at the sound of it spinning up. Subsequently, my living room was filled with laughter (yours and mine) at the ridiculousness of it all.

My fun? Creating violence and carnage with no real-life repercussion. The feel of starring in a gangster movie. The escape from responsibility. Being bad-ass with out the pain of real-life consequence.

Also, no matter how real it looks, notice that in-game victims never really express anguish, pain, or shock. It would probably be too disturbing if they did.

I agree Myke. I've actually always found GTA games to be quite boring. There's not really any skill involved. It's just "playing" a movie basically. I've never been into "exploration" games which is what GTA is really all about.

i have it since yesterday. first impressions so far:

-graphics are good, some nice effects, but not breathtaking. size of the city is enormous
-gameplay is the same as previous installments
-story is pretty interesting, keeps me going at least
    -soundtrack is very good

As a dev CoD4 made me go:
"Alright they raised the bar graphically and game play is solid; how can we compete?"

    GTA IV made me go:
    "Awww crap..."

From a technical and content side, this game so far is rather amazing. Game play is more of the same, but really it worked, so no point in changing it.

I'm doing the same things I've been doing for ages... it just feels so much more fulfilling than ever! The story is fantastic, the game is as hilarious as ever - hell, who needs a social life when there's games like this?

For me the appeal of causing chaos didn't last very long. I picked up GTA 3 and it was so new back then. After that game I really just found joy in exploring the city. I love seeing and hearing all the neat little bits about it. The things the pedestrians say, the minigames, the easter eggs, etc. I one day envision a game that does some many different things(well) that it just replaces most of the games on the market. Yes, I know it won't happen, and if it does it'll be a very long time from now. Why buy a racing game when GTA 17 has racing in it that is just as nice, or a sports game when you can do it in GTA as well.

    Ahh...we can dream

Oh watching TV in GTA 4 is so fun its scary.

I fired up the game last night and as soon as I got past the first cinematic...

I fucking watched TV. Nevermind all the crazy activities I could be getting my character into, but no - f'ng TV. IN GAME TV.

It's reasons like this that enjoy Rockstar's sandbox games. They give you so much in content its overwhelming. I spent a half hour watching the TV until I snapped out of it...

"Um, err maybe I should start a mission."

My favorite kinds of games share one thing in common: Options.

I play games in a very strange matter (I play DS Vanessa and Baek with only punches for fuck's sake); I actively play GTAs and do my best not to kill people (unless it's a requirement for a mission).

You're free to be a homicidal maniac, and the choice is appealing to the reptilian brain, but it is an option I rarely take. Same thing with Hitman (going Postal is stupid) and Fallout (diplomacy is the best weapon).

It's enough that these kinds of games are attractive to my interest in exploration...
