How hard is VF compared to other FGs?

    I noticed that too, trying to pull of some of those tricky SF link combos in matches actually helped improve my execution in VF, I always had trouble doing 270 throws and Goh's Basara combo among other things before I started playing SSF4 now I find execution in VF much easier;

In my opinion VF is easier to play than Tekken and more enjoyable to learn than either Tekken or SSF4.

I got a feeling, that all the fighting games I've been playing while waiting on R/FS will help me a ton. That and I still remember a lot of Jacky's moves.

VF is definitely easier, but with that, its much much harder to win consistently. The mindgames can get rediculous.

Yeah, that's a good article, thanks for the find. It's funny when I see threads at other places about making fighters accessible and all the things I read pertain to VF, yet people choose to ignore it. I just think to myself "it's already been done."

This series is so far ahead of everything, it's ridiculous.

Gonna cross post this at another site if you don't mind.

I must say this article was quite underwhelming. This article, written in a very wandering manner, boils down to this:

    1. The author doesn't seem to have any real experience in fighting online against human opponents and doesn't seem to have any real interest in that either.
    2. Thus he complains about other games' "unbeatable" bosses as playing against the CPU is all he does.
    3. Thus he praises about VF's quest mode where he can endlessly beat some easy, brain dead CPU characters.

The only salvageable point about this article is that the quest mode does seem to be a draw for casual players like the article's author. Well, if that sells copies. . .

I think an interesting point was that he can expand his list of moves at his own pace while having control on the difficulty.
Earning items also makes it seem more interesting.

Of course most things that attract casuals will usually appear foreign to those who care more about the actual gameplay.
I doubt the quest mode would sell copies, but character customization might.
Now if only Akira was not displayed as the generic, average, main character ...

My nephew was convinced that quest mode was online and I just went along with it. He loves quest mode and thinks he's one of the best players online.

Yeah, it doesn't bother me that Akira still rocks his white gi, but I think it makes him feel more unique when his (usually secondary) dark kung fu outfit acts as his primary. Maybe it's because VF2 was my first and that's what I initially registered as his "main" look, but it certainly helps to set his look at first glance apart from that "generic" idea in people's heads.

That is so adorable. Quest Mode is basically a pseudo-online environment, anyway (with so much more immediate and constant competition), so assuming he's really young, it sounds like a great example of that blog's point.

The value of good single player content for attracting casual players should not be underestimated. Its something which the series struggled to provide until VF4.

Casual players need to be attracted to keep the series going, the idea is to then convert a percentage of these into hardcore fans once they get into it. Quest modes with decent AI like Evo's should help that transition a lot rather then leaving them to be destroyed when they play competitively and quit saying its too difficult.

Gameplay is the most important thing but its not the only important thing.

You can learn some vf from quest mode but not much unless you actively seek out info online. I see my nephew a couple of times a month and he plays with me. He shows me new combos that he has figured out. He only recently found out That jacky's 4k+g bounces and it pretty much blew his mind!

He hasn't ever actually played Vf online and I doubt he will any time soon but he really loves to play the game, gets excited as hell when he gets item matches. I guess that's what keeps him coming back to play it. That and I think he kinda feels like we're discovering this game at the same time.

You can be like Morpheous and show him how deep the rabit hole goes. Since he (appears anyway) is young, you can even do a blue red pill choice to see if he is ready to have his world blown.

Oh I know its never gonna make an expert, but combined with a decent training mode it can at least convert an ultra newbie to at least knowing the basics. Its made me a better player even though I know when I get my first taste of online play when FS comes out I'm gonna lose most of the time.

And here's the thing, I believe VF can still be enjoyed at novice levels, its the not the elitist, experts only game some people(both fans and haters) like to portray it as.

    Totally agree with you.

I will say that VF can be incredibly dull if there is a massive skill gap between players.

It's hard to even make the game look good if you are playing someone brand new. It's little fun for the person cycling through low advantage/disadvantage moves to build enough damage for the win and it's less fun for the person who feels like they're getting poked to death.

I'm not saying good players don't smash new folk in other fighters but for the most part the newbies get to do some stuff, shoot fireballs and the like and when the good player wins it can look pretty damn entertaining.

Tekken is way harder to learn if you're brand new to the game than Vf is. Not only that but execution is way harder and throw breaks are insane reaction based events.

Only thing hard about VF is winning. Especially against someone better than you. Very few games will air out your deficiencies as a player the way VF does.

There is very little in the game that is difficult to actual do. Application is a different matter.

    Like chess.

I still think one of the hardest things to do in VF when you're new is to ring out a seasoned player. More often than not if I'm in a rigout position and a new player is trying to put le out I'll put them out instead

I don't think it's as difficult as Tekken and Street Fighter because most of each characters move don't require much button mashing. In fact, I recommend Virtua Fighter to the people who've never had any experience in a fighting game before. That must be the other reason I play VF quite a bit because the combos are simpler but yet I'm still able to have more fun with the game.
