I like to toss a few beers back when I decide to play on my box. Shun seemed like the perfect choice.

Well if vf is an extension of yourself like master po said i guess the drunk Shun is obviously the right choice for me. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

My reason's for really dedicating my time to mastering Pai is cheesy. She was the closest thing aesthetically in this game to Chun Li. Female and asian. That choice was made way back in the original VF.

After I got passed using her stoopit strings over and over again I found she had a great set up, cross up, mix up game that was too fun to play with. You might try that, start off with the character that seems coolest to you and find out what's great about them. Every single character has the ability to win so you won't be shooting yourself in the foot regardless of who you go with.

Lol, don't go by Pai's movies. She loses a bunch of them.

My reason is cause I liked her a lot in VF2 and she apparentely also pisses people off... so thats a nice bonus /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

In the original VF she was far too blocky for my tastes. I want a woman, not a lego figurine. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Wolf. I choose him for power, knowledge of moves, setups, and combos. I originally got into the game because of Shun-Di but never got that good with him. I one day picked up Wolf and have been a Wolf player ever since, his style just feels right. I use Shun-Di and Goh as my secondary.

He's very violent (aiming to kill)
He's got a rather interesting throw game (tsukami)
    He's got funk and arrogance
He's got nice outfits (totally love his vf4 hoodie look)

I wanted to pick Brad as well cause

    He's a womaniser
    He's got funky moves
    He's funny
    He's got funky facial hair

Just hate the hair, so want to customise it to a slick back hair ala Vamp from MGS.

I first played a VF game when VF4 came out. My first character pick was Vanessa... I think I had some crazy idea that her extra long move list would make me more "unpredictable", and I'd win. I got decent with her, mostly abusing the long range mid kicks and whatnot. But after a few months, I realized I still hadn't even memorized her entire move list, so it wasn't the innate advantage I was looking for...

At that point I switched to Kage, and I got ridiculously good with all his long range lunges, and ringing people out with TFT, and completely dominated all my friends for a couple months, until we all finally learned to block consistently, and start throw evading. Once my "tricky" playstyle failed, I didn't have the manual dexterity to learn to really play Kage, so...

I chose Aoi for the crazy mind games and conditioning. It's been five years now, and while I haven't been actively playing the whole time, I never made another character switch. Honestly, I'm still not very good, but I find almost as much fun in successfully reading an opponent and then proving it with a series of reversals as I do in actually getting the win.

    Akira...
He's the only character in the game with the shortest combos. His 2 canned combos are stupidly hard to do [impossible] to mash into.

He's 'impossibly' hard for newbs to learn but he was my first choice due to difficulty. It just so happens his difficult learning curve and style does NOT place him in the bottom tier like some other games do. That and Akira lends a 'boring' uniquness that gets victories more often than fancy shat...

I play Eddy in Guilty Gear AC due to his impossibly hard learning curve as well [probably beaten only by Ino] and for the record, I play Eddy on Pad very effectively... /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif Wish my VF5 stick could plug into PS2 without an adaptor /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

Well, i started with Lauchan in virtua fighter. But, i didn't bothered to get into the game until i bought virtua fighter 4 evolution.

At first lauchan was my favorite character, but i honestly felt i was "Cheating" because how fast he was. So, i looked into the game a saw that jackie bryant was a very unique character with unique move sets.

But, after a few years feeling like "his style isn't that cool. It's too flashy and fake, i want something traditional and powerful." so, i tried looking into akira, but he had a unique style but lei fei won me over.

Lei Fei won me over because he was everything i was looking for; from his louhanquan techniques and stances, to the main fact that i find shaolin monks kick ass. I tried him once, before i got into jacky bryant and i found him very difficult. So when i came back to him, i was very hesitant because his stances confused the shit out of me. But after a year using him in vf4:evo i loved his style.

Then it became it harder when i got vf5 on ps3. But, it made me like him more. I also like the fact that there is no other fighting game out there that uses a shaolin kung fu. Even in tekken, for christ sakes, they have a lot of styles but not shaolin kung fu. I find it amazing that they added khalari though.

In the Shaolin temple, there are three kinds of men. Students, disciples, and masters. Development of the mind can be achieved only when the body has been disciplined. To accomplish this the ancients have taught us to imitate God's creatures. From the crane we learn grace and self control. The snake teaches us suppleness and rhythmic endurance. The praying mantis teaches us speed and patience. And from the tiger we learn tenacity and power. And from the dragon, we learn to ride the wind. Life sustains life. In the fire and passion of the winged dragon there
is no discord. Between the supple silence of the snake, and the eagle's claws there is only harmony.

As no two elements of nature are in conflict, so when we perceive the ways of nature we remove conflict within ourselves. And discover a harmony of body and mind, in accord with the flow of the universe. It may take half a life time to master one system.

This is the way of shaolin (xiaolin). This is the way of temple.
Lei Fei is a good choice and virtual proxy. Perceive the way of nature and no force of man can harm you. Do not meet a wave head on. Avoid it. You do not have to stop force. It is easier to redirect it. This is the way of Shaolin. Learn more ways to preserve than to destroy. This is the way of Shaolin.

Seek rather not to contend. At the temple we know that where there is no contention, there is neither defeat nor victory. The supple willow does not contend against the storm, yet it survives. This is the way of Xiaolin. Weakness prevails over strength. Gentleness conquers. Become the calm and restful breeze that tames the violent sea.

It is in understanding this that throw escapes, evade escapes, OM, sabakis, reversals, evades, and the Inashi become the some of the most powerful techniques in virtua fighter.

Sabaki and Inashi are styles of play as well as particular moves.
Yumi is a form of walking without having to see.

There is shaolin kung fu of the stick/controller

There is shaolin kung fu of physical and mental condition of body, the hands, the eyes.

There is shaolin kung fu of the rings through understanding ring size, wall attacks and ring out strategy.

There is shaolin kung fu in mastering lei fei's moves

There is shaolin kung fu of the rounds. Inashi style round 1, sabaki style round 2, OM and evade attacks round 3.

There is shaolin kung fu in the appearance of Lei Fei, the monks
staff, the yin yang shield, the tai-chi sword, The beads, the beads bring focus.

There are three treasures which I hold and keep. The first is mercy. From mercy comes courage. The second is frugality. From which comes generosity to others. The third is humility. For from it comes leadership. This is the way of Shaolin. This is the way of the temple. This is the way of the lei-fei school.

For those of us who really play the game Virtua Fighter is but another extension of some aspect of ourselves. If you are impatient at Life so you will be in VF. If you are brutal and agressive in Life so you will be in VF. If you are tricky and deceitful in Life so you will be in VF. If you have the heart and mind of shaolin then you will realize that we are one. Yet we are not the same. Ten million living things have as many different worlds. Do not see yourself as the center of the universe. Seek rather wisdom, goodness and beauty. That you may honor them everywhere.

This is the way of Xiaolin, This is the way of temple. This is why virtua fighter is the best fighting system on the planet.

lol no disrespect po but that kinda made me laugh. VF is not THAT serious to me. S'all good tough.

Question, do Hou Quan and Parying Mantis kung Fu have anything to do with Shoalin or is it completely seperate.

look its a fun game thats all we need to think about and Shaolin kung fu is kick ass, cus its in the movies. And yes i have seen the show, and yes i have been to the school in london which is kick ass but too far away to do daily.

The discipline in playing a game and doing the kung fu is huge. cus physical exercise is challenging especially shaolin but playing the game is of course hard and annoying but if i play it alot i will get fat. anywho.

i choose the style which has the most counters, so Aoi is my honey. No philosophy involved. unecessary i think.

there is a mantis style in shaolin kung fu. but i do beleive there is a southern and northern style. Which one is in the shoalin i don't know, but the stance that Lion (the prick) does is the shaolin one i do beleive though someone can correct me if i am wrong.

god it would be so cool if they gave lei fei some frog kung fu stuff cus that stuff looks sick when they do it.

anywho counter style is coolest cus its difficult and looks amazing especially flip kicks that is soooooo beautiful.

where the hell is taekwondo. i want a korean kicker character they have style. Hwang Jang lee, casanova wong, Wong jin we all salute you. (if you don't know who they are i suggest you find out)

Since Yong Soo Park vs Jerome LeBanner I've kinda lost my faith in TKD...

Yeah, they could rip off some Tekken designs and squash a TKD fighter in there to get back at Leo who was created by mashing Rock Howard, Lion Rafale, Jacky Bryant and Akira Yuki in a blender and then swapping the gender. So that'd be a female Jacky Chan with some kind of wild spiky hair in a purple/white suit shouting 'coume oun' and laughing maniacally practicing TKD?
    lmao

TKD is probably one of the worst (if not the worst) martial arts to try use in a real life situation. Watch an MMA match with a TKD guy and watch him lose some/a lot of blood. They keep their arms at their side and try to kick from close range. I wonder if a TKD practitioner has ever won an MMA match? Probably not...
