Is it all about the fighting style?

I've only been playing Jeffry and Aoi lately.

I play Jeffry when I want to do damage.

I play Aoi when I don't want to do damage.

    -----
On the side I play Vanessa, Goh, Wolf, Akira (can do basics with everyone else).

Basically I have a "grading rubric" for character I play in FGs:

Big Damage (Hit:Damage ratio): Akira, Jeffry, Wolf, Goh, Vanessa
Great Throw Game: Jeffry, Wolf, Goh, Aoi, Vanessa
Sex Appeal/Bad-ass-itude: Aoi, Vanessa, Jeffry, Akira, Goh
Capable of a vulgar display of power: Akira (stompy moves), Jeffry
Unique moves with cool properties: Aoi, Vanessa
Same as, but none of the said moves can be considered broken: Aoi
Defensive techniques beyond evasion: Aoi, Vanessa, Akira, Goh, Wolf
<s>Reliant</s> on strings: Akira, Jeffry, Goh, Vanessa (DS!), Wolf, Aoi
Fun to play: Jeffry, Aoi, Akira
Not a stupid stance character: Akira (/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/db.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif not needed), Jeffry (threat doesn't count), Goh, Vanessa (DS!), Wolf, Aoi
    Fun movement options: Aoi
Can't be legitimately called cheap: Jeffry, Aoi, Goh, Wolf
Can be played with a general level of comfort: Jeffry, Vanessa, Aoi

    Akira:7
    Aoi:11
    Goh:7
    Jeffry:9
    Vanessa:8
    Wolf:6

/pointless display of whatever, but I have too much time between swim practice and class

Its all good., There's room for everybody but look at like this:

Take basketball, there are some people who just mess around, in good weather they play 4 or 5 times all season, there are some that only play during family holidays or picnics, while some streeball players play everyday, then there are professionals who get paid to play and lastly there are basketball fanatics, who are infatuated by the game, students of the game, and play it everychance they get and spend lots of time talking about it.

As far as VF I probably fall more in the last category. Its probably the sad very sad result of watching far far too many kung fu flicks from the 80s

So please excuse my rants and raves. No matter how often you play
just as long as you play that's the important thing.

But make no mistake about it there is some extemely deep game play in VF (unlike any other fighter) and there is a certain unique thrill in participating in or watching matches where both players have high skill levels and deep knowledge of the game.

    Caution: Really fanatic, fanboy,statement follows....

VF can be like a drug, if taken at high enough doses it can get both players high. And that kind of high has to be experienced I can't explain it.

And as you all can tell by some of my posts it can cause pyschotic breaks with reality /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cry.gif

    Dammit, Sebo, stop copying me...

Jeffry's my second most used character too, for mostly the same reasons. Whenever I get tired of needing to land 4-5 combos with Aoi to win, but only get hit by ~2 to lose, I pull him out to run around Splash Mountain-ing everyone for revenge.

I dunno about Goh not being cheap, though... those sabakis are just ridiculously, can't even get close to some people.

When did you start playing (though Jeffry is my most used, Aoi is just my favorite FG character ever)?

I was under the impression that there is a lot of variation species -to-species in the Aves class, and the only one I hear saying anything like "cheap" is the Black Phoebe:

But even then, it sounds more like, "Phoebe! PHOEBE!"

I play Akira cause of his bad-assitude and ability to pull off vulgar displays of power /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif Im also a combo person.

Started with US release of the original VF4, however many years ago that was... 7? or something. Though, Goh was my backup character between Evo and VF5... despite them strengthening him, I don't like him anymore, so since VF5, it's been Jeffry second.

I just recently starting playing this game again...and realized how DEEP this game is, I of course play with Lei Fei, since he is Shaolin Stlye..and no matter how hard it is to actually play Lei Fei (without just mashing buttons) but useing technique...i am going to stick with it. My Alt Character is Pai (Her movements are very Similiar to Northern Style Kung Fu).
IMO i think people usually play the flashy players at 1st, but then decide on a character that they appeal to.

I started playing with VF5. I tried Akira, but realized it was hopeless without a stick.

I tried Lau, and have stuck with him ever since. ( I eventually got a hori stick, and tried Akira again. I was able to pull off all of his moves with the exception of KNEE, but then my stick broke a week later)

Kind of makes me wonder if I might actually be better with a different character. I have't even tried most of the characters!

I played a decent Akira on PS3 in question but pai is my main and has been my main from as far back as VF4 on PS2. She was my first real main character and I will always use her first. I also used Vanessa, Aoi, Lei Fei, Goh, Wolf, Lion in the past, and even Lau but I feel the one that best fits me is Pai and no one else. I might play around with the others once in a while but that is it. I would try others once in a while but that would be about it Right now Vanessa is my secondary but this might change at any time just like how I dropped Aoi recently to focus on Pai and Vanessa so when R comes out, I don't have to relearn the characters completely making the adjustment easier.

The stick is the bridge between your intentions and what actions
you take in VF. Whichever fighter causes the most natural bridge
crossing will determine your most effective fighting style in VF

Strive for harmony, oneness , and balance in all things. This is the way of Shaolin. A true VF master will have travelled this path at least once. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I ended up sticking with Eileen because i liked her options and comboes. Turns out she suits my mischievous character and infuriates my brother when i use her. Excellent /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I started with VF5 and chose Lei Fei because we have the same default hairstyle /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif no...wait.... /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cry.gif.
My 2nd is Pai because of her extensive offensive optio...nah it was the dressing up,and i'm not the only one by the looks of things ;).
Recently started to learn Akira as it was the character i'm having most trouble against.

I chose Shun because I love to drink sake. And because I'm really a very old man at heart. And because his voice and my own are very similar /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

And I play El Blaze because I love hot dogs.

^He really loves hot dogs, no really, like for seriously X(

I use to play with Jacky in VF1 because he was easy to use and did a lot of damage. I liked him in VF2 when they made him more like Bruce Lee but Shun also got my attention with the coolest fighting style in a fighting game for that time. I skipped VF3, not my cup of tea and I went back to Jacky as my main and Shun as my sub and then VF4Evo came out...
now this is was the game where a character fit my style almost perfectly:

*WARNING - BRACE YOURSELF FOR AN EPIC STORY ABOUT HOW I CHOSE BRAD AS MY MAIN*

When VF4Evo came out in Japan, I was stationed in Oahu, Hawaii and I would probably not have seen the Japanese version if it wasn't for a training mission that I had for 30 days in Thailand. We trained during the day and walked around the bazaars, clubs and other areas that were close enough to take a bus during the evening.
I already liked Sagat in SF and I liked Bruce in Tekken so when I saw Brad doing Muay Thai (on one of the TVs in a bazaar) and doing the kind of slipping, ducking and swaying back that I liked about Steve (from Tekken even though I don't like Steve that much) I was hypnotized. I got to see a lot of snakes, a 10 foot-long cobra, beautiful women, sit ringside at Muay Thai matches, watch guys knocking each others teeth out and some other cool sights, I even got to train Muay Thai with the Thailand army but watching Brad's exhibition matches still ranks in the top 10 with some of my best Thailand memories. That's how cool Brad is to me.
The Japanese version of VF4Evo had about twice as much exhibition matches as the American version so I got to see some really cool fights with Brad. Brad also looked cool with what looked like one of those red Armani shirts that I would wear (back in my womanizing days). Sadly, the American version gave Brad a very ugly Hawaiian shirt /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbs_down.gif
His profile said that he was a womanizer which made me relate to him more.
I already liked Muay Thai but after watching how beautiful yet violent it was in real, full-contact, no-padding matches and I got to see beautiful Thailand, Muay Thai's birthplace, I was sold and have never looked back.
I like other characters too (like Lau) but Brad is without a doubt the character that I relate to, appreciate and have fun with the most.

Cool story tony. By the way Hawaiian shirt rock!

The reason I choose Goh is because I do judo and start with what you know. By the way in a real fight goh would get his ass kicked.

I began with shun in VF4 because his fighting style was fun and because Akira was impossible for me with a dualshock on ps2.
On VF4evo I played with brad and kage but thoses didn't fit to my playing style...
On VF5 I had a stick with my 360 so I picked up Akira but when I started to practice Ju jutsu. Actually I even have trouble to control Goh as naturally as I control Akira but with a strong will, some training and some experience it should be ok.

I used to be a Jacky player all the way when vf1 was out. Of course, I was just a kid, so it wasn't even like I was a serious player, but I loved the game. It's kinda funny, cuz when you're young everyone lies, and so kids in my class would start rumors like there was a code that wolf would throw you into the abyss or giant swing your legs off. Please note that this was around the time mk1 and 2 was out and that game was huge, so I guess that's why everyone made up shit like that. Anywayz, I played Jacky for every virtua fighter game. Then I got into DOA4 and it's was cool, but I used ayane and everytime I won, someone would bitch about how I only won because she was cheap, easy to use, abused lows, whatever you name. That community just couldn't accept an ass whoopin sometimes. So, I decided when I heard vf5 was coming out that I'd use akira, because I knew he was pretty much the hardest to use as far as commands and if I actually became good with him, then I could finally just get my props instead of a bunch of lame ass excuses why I won. And now that's why I started to use akira. Of course, now I love him and wouldn't drop him for any other chararcter, although kage's cool too.
