Is it all about the fighting style?

The first time I ever played VF in the arcade, I used Jacky. Then I went to the store one day to buy a Nintendo 64 and saw that the Sega Saturn had a sale and they bundled 3 games with it (Virtua Cop, Daytona USA, and VIRTUA FIGHTER 2). I told my mom, I wanted the Sega Saturn instead because it had Virtua Fighter 2. I didn't really have any main characters. Well, I wouldn't play Virtua Fighter again until Virtua Fighter 4 came out. I used Jacky but didn't really play it all that much. And then Virtua Fighter 4:Evolution came out. I figured I'd try Akira out. I've always heard he was very hard to use but for some reason, he wasn't too hard to use. Sure I wouldn't be able to do some moves of his like his 1 frame knee consistently, considering that I'm a pad player. Well, when I had VF4:Evo, I actually had a friend to play against. Much later, I wanted to try another character. I tried Brad out in training. I thought, wow, his combos are easy and really damaging. From then on, I made Brad my main. Eventually I would get Champion rank with Brad in quest mode. I've used Brad ever since. As a matter of fact, Brad is the only reason I'm using Muay Thai characters in other fighting games. In Tekken, Raven used to be my main but now Bruce is. Actually, there's more to it than that, but I won't go into it right now.

I can play Akira on pad. Knee, DLC, SDE, double palms, SPoD and everything in between.

I was a Lau play. When VF2 dropped i love jacky's beat knuckle and Soccer kick.

I used to use a Pad but i change to Hori on DOA 4 when i learned 360 pads suck. I play VF5 on Hori but if i could get a Sega Saturn Controller bye bye hori.

I used to use third party stuff but they are too delicate. I used to use converters to use my dependable PS2 controllers but the input lag that came with them killed me bad so i went to the old 360 pad and found that I could make it work if I really tried and I am used to playing with it now.

I knew this guy before a few years back that used Akira as well as Konjou or any of the other great Akira players and he did it all with a PS2 pad knees, combos, juggles and all. He had a great shun and lau as well. I wish I knew where he was right now. He really inspired to play VF4 evolution when I really needed someone to keep me going after being beaten by the AI to the point where I was going to quit.

I originally chose Sarah, but I found that her fighting style didn't really suit me. I then switched over to Pai, who is much more fitting. I tend to pick speedier characters with great comboing capabilities, so she ended up being an obvious fit. Though I have to say, I also chose her partially for her customization options and personality. Both are just so fun!

I usually go for the "crazy" characters, because

    ... they are funny
... often have some tactical option that others lack (and allows them to pressure those other characters)

Example: Shun Di ( My main in VF). Fun to play as a 96 year old Zhui Quan Master who wastes himself during a fight. And you can´t relent the pressure on him becaus then he is free to waste himself even more and he grows more powerful with every DP

Yoshimitsu from Soul Calibur (2 preferred). If you let him he regenerates his freaking health bar!!!

    From Street Fighter:
Blanka: Green Beast from the jungle with electrocuting as a special move and biting the opponents face as a throw - awesome.
Cody: Jailbreaker who can bring a knife to the fistfight and thus does chip-damage even with his normal punches.

Blitztank from Akatsuki Blitzkampf - it´s a freaking tank ftw!

I started with VF1, played Jacky.
Didn't start playing VF agian until VF4 came out, then I played Jacky agian. I used him because he had a crazy mixup game. During this time it was just me vs my bro and dad. My bro picked Lei-Fei and Shun Di, while my dad was a pokin' mofo with Lion.

VF4evo drops. I buy it because its only 20 dollars. I notice there's this badass wearing a hood with crazy scars. I pick him.
Get my ass beat. a week later, I'm mashing faces in my household with one of the only guys in the game that doesn't rely on crazy combos to win. My dad quit, my brother would only play me if I didn't play as Goh. (Ironically, He wouldn't play KOF if I used Clark, K', and Shingo).

Fast forward to my second deployment, and a fellow fighting game enthusiast starts playing VF5O with me. Next thing I know, Jacky not working. Aoi isn't working. I dig deep and realize the only chance I have agianst his crazy awesome Vanessa is Goh. every day till the deployment ends we play best to 10 every day. He won a majority of those (damn you Vanessa and your retarded Defensive stance options) but that just solidified Goh as my main. To this day I still use goh and I am worlds better now.

So my main is Goh, simply because he fits my style best. I like to play smart, pick my targets and wait for my opponent to slip up. Then when you least expect it.... Forward+K into V+PKG <<PG

    96 damage yo!

I usually go for Kung Fu or Hard Karate style characters, ex: Feng Wei, Makoto, Takuma etc.

In VF I mained Akira and I play Lei Fei and Goh as secondary characters.

  18. When I was a kid, I saw Virtua fighter anime, and watched Akira doing a palm attack, into a mean looking body check, and a full powered up double palm attack on the back of a freaking robot, and then that narrator explained to me how badass this move is in 3d illustration, step by step.

Now that I have VF5, I am still practicing the Single palm combo, and the difficulties in execution just makes me try harder ever time I pick this game up.

I dont know who the hell is this Akira, nor do I know why this game have fighters across the globe just.... fighting, but to me, all I have in my mind is to choose Akira and try to do some thumb crushing combos and finger twitching attacks.

I dont know about you guys who play Akira, I am still new to this game and I heard Akira has kinda hard and akward motion input for his commands compared to others, but every time I perform successful SPOD, I feel that I have won the fight. Too bad it is not a move you land a lot.

Just Curious StunPalmOfDoom [IMG] Do you use the PS3 controller or an Arcade stick? I use Lei Fei, and have found that some moves that were hard or awkward on the PS3 controller were a lot easier on the stick. But I have also found it the other way around for some moves. Some moves are easier to pull off on the controller. But in general the stick is easier (at least for me).

  20. I use the PS3 controller, never was a stick player. To be honest, when it comes to type of controllers, each one has their own preferences.

I could not do a simple motion or charge motion in arcade sticks in games like Street fighter, or press combination buttons at rapid succession in games like Virtua fighter with only 3 button layout, thats why I prefer the triggers for short cuts in my PS3 controller.

Ofcourse I wouldnt try to play Akira (after playing with him for over 4 months) using traditional button layout, I have already adjusted the buttons to match his pace.
