Brad's Hell Trap inashi is used at advantages to catch low punches. Does that mean it's offensive, because it's used at an advantage? What if my opponent evades instead? It can be used defensively in this case, since I'm pretty low to the ground afterwards and there was no successful evade. It's this kind of ambiguity that creates confusion. I happen to agree with Feck's sentiments. As stated previously, the only "pure" defensive options are those available to all characters as part of the system.

It's actually best used in situation where you're at disadv, if done at adv it will frequently fail to actually sabaki the /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif

What I was trying to say originally is that having non-universal defensive options doesn't make a character 'defensive' or 'offensive' as such.

Lei-Feis punishment game may suck but he has a frigging truckload of options to keep his offense going despite being in disadvantage most of the time. Is Lei-Fei a defensive character because of his options from disadvantage? I don't think so.

    Somethings wrong here.
edit: Also I would say that Brad's helltrap is neither defensive or offensive, its a tool meant to punish those who try to lowpunch him out of his slips and sways.

I've used the Hell Trap after a /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif hit (+4), and it worked.

EDIT: Wait, I see what you mean Manji. You contradicted yourself Jeneric.

I don't think we're allowed to ask questions like that in here Manji.

To me, an offensive character is one that can keep going and going and going fairly easily. (Edit: Without much need for OR without much potential while being on the defensive.)

Aoi with cancel spam is offensive.
Kage with throws that seem to come out of nowhere.
And somehow vanessa usually manages to be a bulldog and I can't do anything else than be a punching bag...

Jeffry doesn't seem capable of making you too afraid to attack. That would be defensive. Block, evade, and throw.

So for me, a defensive character is a character that would be encouraged to hold back.
If you want to punish with Sarah, you have to hold back your punches, and either step back or use DM.

While blocking, if you can interrupt a string with a reversal of any kind (I didn't quite do my inashi/sabaki/... studies yet.), I consider that to be defensive.

Sarah's useless neutral P+K that catches some attacks two billion frames after the input, is not defensive. It's just trash.

I did a typo and corrected it.

If you do /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif and then do /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif you've obviously wasted your 4 frames of adv and more then that, so you're not at adv anymore.

Good. Then Sarah certainly isn't one.

No, it is an offensive option that is meant to be used in advantage, and its a flamingo-entry that is advantage on block.

    I don't disagree with that.

I was about to call semantics (since I impliedly factored in the frames from entering Ducking into the equation), but then realized that you probably meant using it after guarded moves leading into stances, where he is at a disadvantage. Point taken.

You know what? One time I saw a guy that was so drunk, he was making three steps backwards for every step forward... How's THAT for a defensive technique? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Wait, I just realized something. I think that "defensive" could have many different interpretations. Sorry if this was said maybe a thousand times already. I'm too lazy to look through this entire thread.

BTW, what do you all think about Sarah's punishment?

    Well...

These days I play Sarah. I've been advised to play more offensively, and been told that Sarah is an offensive character.
I believe it, judging by her almost complete lack of reliable defensive tools.

I used to play Aoi and I liked to use her reversals, but apparently most Aoi players just keep attacking non-stop thanks to their cancels. So I guess that she's not a defensive character.

I find no satisfaction in being aggressive. I'd much rather display my skills through defense and reaction.

So is there any character that is seen as a defensive character?

Goh and Aoi are probably your best choices for a defensive character. They're really the only characters in the game that are incredibly dangerous when they're at a frame disadvantage.

I may be wrong but I think...

    Thanks.
In that case, I might try Aoi again later, but since everyone plays her offensively it doesn't really feel right.
I'm learning Goh now and he looks like he absolutely cannot stay in the opponent's face for long. So that's good, unless I discover that I'm wrong later...

I like how the thread turned out to be. (Am I the only one? People are saying it was a flame war...)
I just expected to see a lot of names without much explanations, but it turned into a discussion about defense in general.
So I ...think that this thread has been more useful than expected.

At least it was for me.
