Finally, one does not need to learn the "advanced" techniques in VF in order to be competitive. I know many people who don't E-TEG for example and win a lot (what they would do is alternate their defense...throw escape, just guard, dodge and one throw escape, etc.). In fact, I often see the opposite effect...players trying to do too much with these advanced techniques and playing sloppy.

Amen. Well said ICE. I completely agree -- sometimes one gets lost trying to do all the hyper advanced techinques.

I love VF4, but I can see why my friends don't play it with me and I end up playing Guilty Gear or Soul Calibur with them. VF4 simply requires too much time and effort for no return.

I guess it depends on how you define "Return" ... double digits on the combometer, a really painful looking or amusing animation, being able to win almost every match after playing the game for a couple of months, or knowing you just plain outsmarted someone?

Your example of throw escapes of a good one. I can't imagine how much of a pain in the ass it would be going into the game fresh right at chapter 4 and trying to memorize every character's throws commands and animations.

But it's so SATISFYING to break your opponent's throws...it looks damned good, it's really noticeable when someone escapes an rarely used throw in a match. It gets a lot of respect when you can do it consistently and it's clearly not a fluke. To me, that's reward. The harder a game is, the more rewarding it is to be good at it. Why be the master of connect-4 when you can be good at chess?

Just for what it's worth, I found the game really entertaining at scrub level, when I started playing VF2... If you're playing experts right off the bat, maybe that's why it might feel the game's not worth it.

    yup
it's like saying doing combos in ikaruga n radiant silver gun is nothing but hassles

u can play both games the normal way

    shoot everything in ur sight

    or

    play it the proper way
(which unfortunately, involves lotsa time time time time time time time time time time time time time time)

Don't see anything wrong with it though.
