Judo Vs Aikido

I don't have a problem with controlling an opponent with joint manipulation (even a resisting opponent) but the biggest problem with Aikido is the techniques they use to get to the point of manipulation. Those, invariably, rely on slow, one attack, no-power approaches from a completely compliant opponent. That's bad. Very bad.

I once read an interesting article from an Aikidoka who recognized that most Aikido dojos were training unrealistically with disastrous consequences on their relevance in real combat. The Aikidoka went as far as to acknowledge that Judo students would have a much better chance of gaining advantage over a skilled striker than an Aikidoka simply because of the style of training. The Judoka would need to close distance but because they they train and compete against opponents who resist their techniques they would fare much better than their Aikidoka counterparts.

I agreed then and I agree now.

People who say that "oh man they don't allow eye gouges so it isn't real" are full of shit, because you can't train eye gouges at full capacity. Only people who train in a fully alive capacity have any chance of succeeding when it comes to application.

I think what he means is, since ninja's are silent midnight assassins it's really hard to see their true power at work under the glare of lights & in a steel cage & in front of a screaming crowd on television. You have to wait until after the fight. After the pint of whisky and two 8balls of cocaine have collided in poor Mr. UFC Badass' system and he sleeps silently in his hotel room within the comforting bosom of the finest hooker $75 can rent. This is where our friend the ninja slips in, administers the crimson necklace, and slips out. He didn't even hear himself do it.

    Real. Ultimate. Power.

O RLY? That makes any martial art where you dont fully complete the act thats intended cannot be trained. So one cannot train breaking limbs, snapping necks, hitting people in the eyes, balls and neck, any sword art, firing arrows (cuz your not really hitting actual people [ok maybe thats a bit far]), etc. If your UFC champions cant protect their eyes balls and necks or from a weapon strike then wtfbbq ?

As for UFC being the ultimate proving grounds for "fighting". Thats a laugh. Fighting includes weapons and dirty tactics neither of which are allowed in ULTIMATE fighting championship. The ultimate fighter is using a gun, preferrably a laser gun, that fires anthrax laced beams at you.

PS: I was making the comment while you replied Sanjuro. ROFL! Dont get me started on ninja's being able to fuck up any WMA/UFC/PYT champion. I think you need another link to the greatest martial art in the world. Ever.

    Re: What about ninjas?

My suggestion had nothing to do with putting words into your mouth, I was merely saying "what's the alternative".

Secondly, how the fuck can limb breaking and neck cranking not be trained? Are you familiar with the concept of tapping out when you've hit pain threshold?

Thirdly, the early UFC's allowed groin strikes and neck strikes. This had essentially nil result on the match results.

Again, eye gouges are ridiculously difficult to train/pull off. I mean honestly, the only way I can think of someone being able to pull off an eye gouge against a resisting opponent is in the mount position, and if you've mounted the guy, you've already performed enough legal technique to get there.

Finally, the UFC is hand to hand combat. If you want self defense, carry a gun.

And by fully alive capacity, I mean TRAINING THE MOTION TO FULL CAPACITY. If you are familiar with the concept of motor skills learning, you will know that by training over and over eventually you do things by second nature. If you train doing things at half speed, when push comes to shove, you aren't somehow magically going to pull them off full speed.
