Neithan from Bas Gros Poing is reporting that Masaaki Kukineo, producer of KOF XII and XIII, left SNKPlaymore in November. This news creates some doubt about the port of KOF XIII. Furthermore, sources within SNKP are reporting that the new president, Ryo Mizufune, wants to shut down the video game division and focus on licensing instead, such as porting old titles and creating pachinko games and figures. With the lack of news regarding the console release of XIII, the future for King of Fighters is looking bleak.

I say, KOF13 is a shit KOF, unlike 12. If they cant make decent KOFs, better they take a break and work on a good game (KOF12 system, or MOTW system or dear lord a new Waku Waku7, or whatever, as long as its not a clone of KOF98-02).

Oh and I suck balls at KOF, but KOF13 is broken regurgitated shit none the less. Im glad they understood it, so I dont have to spend my money to support SNK yet another time with a substandard game (I bought them all, NGP and cool cool toon included).

why exactly is 13 shit again? i had a fucking blast for the few matches i was able to play at ufo. it may not be as balanced as 98 or have as interesting of a system as 02um, but it's still a damn good game.

    Why I like KOF12:

Deadlock allows to trade hits, including projectiles: no more fireball traps

CD attacks can be cancelled out of and into, they can juggle, they are chargeable and delayable

Back CD is a guard attack, which is basically a parry/just defense + a hit back (best of both worlds IMO)

Critical combos are powerful but do not require extreme dexterity or memorization

    Roll cancels need no meter

KOF12 is a breath of fresh air, the single stand out game game in SNK recent memory. I understand that people complained about online and lack of characters, but the system is great. KOF13 is a retread of past KOFs, they took away all the good things 12 had and replaced them with 98/02. How is this an improvement?

That one broke my heart. Those spindly arms, that huge ball of hair, she looks like a charicature drawing. I can't stand to look at one of my favorite characters time any more (note: avatar). Thanks a lot SNK...

Athena's turned into a chibi drawing. Never much liked her but this is just wrong.

Leona's never looked better though, at least there's that.

Don't want to imagine what Vanessa will look like if she shows up again.

Ralf's fighting style really fits with his new bulk weirdly enough. Clark and Maxima just look silly. I'm still on the fence about Terry, it seems to work pretty well but its gotta be strange for a guy that big to do that inverted spinning uppercut kick (reverse tackle was it?).

    Ah well.

I liked what they did in KoF 2003 with the tagging in and out and I liked what they did in KoF XII. Both changes were not completely fixed before they were taken out sadly.

KoF will forever remain in a limbo of incompleteness if they keep this up. Either the mechanics are not polished enough or the balance is bonkers (aka: to hell with Kula and K'), there's always something wrong with these games. Which is a real shame because I love the character designs.

I'm enjoying learning KOF 2002UM and was really looking forward to XIII. Seems like a very underrated series in Europe/US (as with VF) so this news is terribly disappointing. Been a fan of SNK since Fatal Fury as well so very sad to see this happen. Maybe KOF13 will eventually make it but it could be the end of the line for the series.

Maybe VF series will be the next one to go?

IMO its difficult to compare KOF to VF,

KOF has been using pretty much the same arcade board for 10 games, while VF has used a new one for every new version.

KOF became stale in 99, let alone in 2010. SNK faces problems producing a new game, because they switched to a new developement system and its costly and time consuming.

Sega has no problem making VFs. They usually update it in the arcades every couple of years and the game is still in the top 3? hardly doing badly AFAIK.

What makes you think VF may be the next one to go?

In the 2k2 system, CD attacks under certain conditions can be comboed into (i.e. - Billy Kane CH CD, dp+B).

There aren't really that many fireball traps in the game... The only real ones would be like Heidern traps in the corner to setup for the Neck Roller (d~u+B/D), or EX Takuma fireball setups... Even those are avoidable with the right timing, and some characters have moves that beat those setups...

Guard attacks aren't really needed if you understand all of your defensive options... The whole CD while blocking in 2k2 while it did cost meter, you were more likely to build it back up, and again in some cases could combo into it with a special, a DM, SDM, and in some cases HSDM...

Critical combos got really repetitive and did all kinds of damage... You could go in a match with Ryo and dp+A/C as many times as you could and that would be a high damaging combo... That's about as bad as SF4's ultras imo... I'm not saying you should have gdlk reflexes to do a strong combo, but it shouldn't be that basic... The only character I noticed that had non-repetitive combos were Kyo (obvious) and Daimon (his were quite flashy I thought)...

KoFXIII is using a system similar to 2k2's because 2k2 was the most popular game (I believe even more popular than 98)... It was the most balanced system and was one of those "easy to learn, hard to master" systems (especially because some characters' BC combos required practice and weren't repetitive)... On top of that, alot of KoF players did not like the system at all... I don't like the fact that you have to land a critical counter in order to do a crazy combo, and the move varied for some characters (CH C or D).

Don't get me wrong, I like the game in general... I just think that it should've been for a different game and not KoF... It just didn't scream KoF to me... While I like the new design and the feel, there wasn't a team setup, no stage ending, etc... It felt more like a beta than anything else, and then to put KoF on the box wasn't gonna do it any good... The lobby setup was good though-- too bad the netcode was beyond meh; which is strange because games like Samurai Shodown Sen has a flawless netcode (I'm dead serious-- just rent the game and see for yourself)...

    <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">KOF13 is broken regurgitated shit none the less</div></div>

What makes KoFXIII broken??? There are no infinites since the patch, and even though Raiden and K' are still really strong, they are beatable... 97, and 2003 were broken, that I'll give you... And how is the ability to come up with new combos with the Max Mode system regurgitated??? What about DOA's yomi system they've used from the very first game??? XIII is an advanced version of 2k2UM... I do believe that some characters need beefing and others nerfing, but its no MvC2 broken or anything close to it...

Just speculating as Sega seems to be moving in a different direction now. VF's popularity in the JP arcades seems to have gone down a lot (compared to VF4 series) and sales were really bad on console. Arcadia and Amusement Journal have FS low in the rankings and a several people have mentioned it's doing badly over there. Reno also mentioned there were no updates in sight for FS arcade which is unusual and then there's that bleak outlook Zerochan posted. All that's just making me a bit pessimistic over VF's future.

I'm not really gonna expect a VF6 until some credible evidence comes up about it.

I agree with all of the above Jinxhand,

KOF02 was a somehow (hardly IMO) good game in 2002. Thing is, I bought and played it on my Dreamcast back in 2003 if I remember correctly.

The game is hardly the best KOF (01 was more original IMO) but fine, let the fans play it. play the same thing in 2003, in 2004, in 2005, in 2006, in 2007, in 2008, in 2009.

But for the love of god they gave us a new game in 2010, which sets out to make things more flexible and easy to do, and what? they go back to 2002 after that...

You admit that KOF12 is a good game, only not a good KOF game. Yes, maybe its time to let KOF die, and give us a sequel to KOF12, refine the system, get new people play the game. call it Mark of the wolves 2.

If XIII was released, and they took a hiatus til XIV, I'd be fine with that... Seems that most people want a MoTW2 to drop anyway, myself included... My only beef with the first one was that there wasn't enough characters... Despite the tier list, it was still playable and anyone could win (Freeman has it hard though)... The game was about 70% complete last I heard, so who knows...

Just because a producer left shouldn't necessarily mean the end of anything... Both VF and DOA still continue on without their "fore fathers", so KoF is still probably gonna kick it, maybe not as strong though...

The only thing we can do is respond to them, especially on their SNK facebook page (they're not gonna close it down anytime soon)...

I agree with Matt about 12, KOF XII was a really good system and was a fun game. The only problem - which made me deeply hate the game at the end of it all - was how unbelievably bad the online was.

SEGA, Capcom and Arcsys all made games with good, to even great, online functionality. Why SNK is stuck making games that literally have the worst netcoding ever known to man? I will never know. They've ported some great games to 360, but it's all been undone by their absolutely atrocious online capability.

If anyone here has ever tried to play KOF 2002 or GMOW online, then you know what I'm talking about. The games just aren't playable in any legit way. In my opinion, not having a good online ranked mode takes a lot of steam out of players' desire to improve and work on their game. Otherwise, what's the point of practicing when you'll never really get to beat on someone.

I remember Cozby beating me up in KOF 2002 online and the connection was stable, but definitely not good. The thing is, he only lives 30-40 miles away from me, the connection should have been really good. Further, the games they ported to XBLA are old games and deserved release online IF you could play them *cough* online; but you can't...

What is wrong with SNK? As much as I hate to say it, Capcom has all these other FG developers beat by miles when it comes to listening to their fans, especially the Western audience, and working to give them what they want. If you're not making games that suit your audience, letting them play the games, and letting them pay you for doing so, why are you even making games at all?
