There was nothing to refine in 12 -- the system was inherently broken and stupid. There is a heap of crappy fighting games in the same category, and there are only a few people will show up and say "it could've been good; it just needed more development time".

I think you're confusing SNK's flailing attempts at making a "new" KOF with something genuinely original. The game has an established, successful formula in 2k2 and '98 with respect to the core gameplay, and there are a number of new things in 13 that have been discussed already itt. Where else could they take the series, really?

I guess I disagree with you. 12 was fairly balanced, thanks partly to its system, IMO.

funny that you should think that, because most KOF are known for their brokeness/god tiers and 13 itself had to be patched already for infinites...

EDIT: bad quality, but good matches:

KOF is known for thier bosses... Most KOFs in general weren't broken... Only 2001 (techincally it was just some OP assists), 2002 (Angel and Kim infinites that were really hard to do), and XIII (Mature infinite) were really broken... If anything there were more glitches like the red screen glitch than there were infinites... People give KOF a bad rap because they see one thing, but don't even know that most of those things done are not even close to practical in real matches unless you use Igniz and do his qcf+c infinite... The only thing really broken in XII is the netcode... There are OP characters, but they aren't broken...

The crazy thing is that there's jacked up things in SF that never get noticed, like the infinites in SF4, and unblockable ultras... It's just deemed as something that's ok, and accepted... Raiden's dropkick on the other hand??? People see that and have already lost the match because they allowed themselves to lose mentally... But that's a discussion for another time...

In any event, the more recent KOFs show no real signs of brokeness (98UM and 02UM) and they're beefing those up with another update, which shows that SNK is at least trying to stay dedicated to perfection... Now let's put that ideal to practice on the netcode for the couch generation of fighters who think they're gdlk because their online ranking says so (I kid---sorta)...

Some matches from the Carnival Games... Quite some variety, especially in the 2nd match...

Dude gets crushed by Team Fatal Fury, then tries to tier whore and still gets crushed... I am glad that Raiden can punish quickly though... Plus Robert had some dope combos, that I personally think are flashier than K''s...

That's actually the Art of Fighting team. Those matches were great though, yeah those Robert combos looked really nice.

Something else I remembered from KOF12 was dash cancelling, which is something you don't usually see in a 2d fighter. Has that been retained in XIII?

I don't remember dash canceling in XII, but even still, I don't see it at all in XIII... I wouldn't mind the addition... There are a few things in XII that are incorporated in XIII ever so slightly, like the zoom function is only used during SDMs and HSDMs...

I wished they kept clash, but made it more refined... It also made high level play more interesting...

The secret to King of Fighters is all in Iori Yagami family name backwards.

So, there's a pic of Krauser in XIII... Supposedly some are saying its to be DLC, others are saying its fake... Here's the link:

    What do you think???

Oh yeah, Dark Geese, Desmond Delaghetto, and the MN KOF community are holding sessions right now being streamed. Here's that link, too:

They're playing KOF98UM now, but other KOFs and SNK fighters will be on the stream also...

Yeah that Dark Knight version of Krauser is pretty dope... Same with Iori... Here's hoping that SNK actually sees this...

That Shermie sprite was so good it actually made me nerdrage a bit. Her being playable in KoF XIII and not a crappy cameo would be grounds for day one purchase, and I don't even own a console.

Sometimes I think that me picking someone to play is like a death kiss for the character... over the years I've been playing Shermie, Yamazaki and Yashiro, Vanessa, K9999, Angel, Foxy... and loved Krizalid to bits, only for them to be axed out of the franchise in the next installment. I can never keep a team through two consecutive KoF's...

And now the new SC is coming out and I'm betting Sophitia's brats will fill the "sword and board" niche there, with Cassandra getting the boot. FML.

But the latest KOF before XIII (02UM) has all those characters except for K999 who's replaced by Nameless.

Indeed, but at that point I was like a decade into getting my characters taken away from me (not just removed, but pronounced DEAD or RETCONNED out in most cases) pretty much annually (my first KoF was 98 back when it was new and I had a head full of hair).

Having a few of them return for a dream match every now and again (usually with worse sprites and LESS moves and animations, lord knows why) only aggravates the pain and my lack of foresight not to pick the Kyo-Benimaru-Daimon team - whose players can play them whenever they feel like it, not once per geological era. "Hey man, here's Yashiro back! Except we've cut off 1/3 of his moves and intro/winposes and he's technically dead, so gone next year. Enjoy!" ...sure sounds great, eh?

Bottom line, I'd love it if people making game storylines would understand once and for all... don't. kill. characters. I imagine most people don't play fighters for the heart-wrenching drama, and few things are as frustrating as learning that the character you've put time into learning will never return (except for crappy dream matches). They've even started to back away from this bull by bringing back Mature and Vice though... so maybe there's hope?
