Great idea. The bright colour of Kodokan's mats truly soothes a man's heart... And watching the practice is free of charge /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif .

If you're into it, make sure to stock up on local currency before you go... Or the other way around, make sure you don't have a single sen on you before you go, for the abundance of goods at the store out there is both wonderful and terrifying /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif .

I wish you good luck then... Just a note, if you don't plan on towing your gi to Japan (one info - if you do, make SURE it's white. You can enter Kodokan in a blue gi, but you may not be able to leave /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif ...) - you can buy a good one for a reasonable price down there. It's soft and easy to grip (good to train in), but quite sturdy and has this cool Kodokan mark to show off /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif .

    Hey, everyone!

This is Chief Gutti from Norway here. A VFDC trip to Japan really is an excellent thought! If us Norwegians are lucky, you guys are hopefully planning this trip to commence some time in the beginning of 2009! Us Norwegians (Netrom, Raider(SuperNiklas), JINsama(SkyJin), RAT(RATsama and Anarkira) have already discussed are plans over and will be most likely heading over to Japan sometime between Christmas 2008 and the start of February 2009. Unfortunately, I don't think there are any tournaments happening around that time, so it probably is highly unlikely that you guys would come and visit during that time though /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I'll be moving to Germany this September for a year to finish my Master's degree, but according to students at the university we all get holidays from mid December to February, and that is why we have decided to hopefully go to Japan then. Netrom and Raider are both heavily into school as well, so we don't think we would be able to postpone our trip past February.

Who knows though, maybe we can even get some of the Swedish junkies to join us too! I haven't spoken to any about the thought, but many have shown interest of coming along in the past. The Norwegian community has fallen a little off lately, but I am sure that a trip like this would re-spark the passion for playing the game again.

Anyway, I will regularly check back on this thread to stay updated on how everyone's planning is going. To me, just meeting the people is just as exciting as playing a game, so I am crossing my fingers that we all get the opportunity to meet together in Japan next year /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

    And yeah, Start saving NOW!

I think that if all of us maybe got together on a group rate, it wouldn't be that expensive. I went to Japan as part of a weeklong tour with about 30 people, and it was $2300, including roundtrip airfare. But this included the tour bus and driver who took us around, Shinkansen tickets, four star hotels every night, and crazy expensive restaurants for lunch and dinner. All of us meeting up in Cali or something and playing for a few days while we wait for VFDC people to trickle in from around the US, then flying out together seems like a good idea (assuming there are enough nice folks to house everyone!) I'm really keen on doing this cheap too, because the less airfare and hotels cost, the longer we can all spend in Japan =) If anyone has had experience, or could look up some backpacking-style accommodations, or even a passable decent hotel, that'd be a good lead. After splitting the rooms 2-3 ways, we can probably afford a place that isn't a total shithole and at least has a TV for casual /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

So here is the tentative idea for the trip:
    Date: March 26th to April 5th 2009
Socal Meet: March 26th-28th (casual and tourney matches)
    Japan Meet: March 29th - April 5th
    price TBD

things we should do while there:
    * visit all of the top arcades in the city
    * try to be part of a local tournament
    * site see the country. Clubs, Countryside, Amusement parks....
    do something other than VF

Let me know what you think and add your ideas as well

okay guessing all of yall do not understand japanise, do you need a translator and can yall eat with chopsticks because that all they have their lol! my mom visited thier and she staved because she couldnt eat with chopsticks. But going to a bunch arcades is a great sugestion but think of this what is supoosed to be coming out near the summer or in 2009 in genreal? the grand daddy is returning; Street Fighter 4 release in japan will be huge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. ANd alot of turnys will cater to that release. SO keep that in mind, its nothing major but its most defidently something to think about.

yea so maybe ur best bet to get the most out of some trip like this would be to go a lil after VF5:R comes out.

Too early in the year imo. I think fall trip is better, and is supposed to have nicest weather (also, no way am I going to be able to get off 2 weeks that early after spending 3 weeks there this fall).

Sometime during the summer months I think would work best for those of us that are still students at college, donno how many of us there are but fall would be ruff for me.

its been a while but isn't March Spring Break for most?

  18. Spanky

Spring breaks are usually staggered, though, so not everyone's is going to be at the same time.

Personally, while I love SF and lots of other fighting games, I don't really see the point of going all the way to Japan to learn a game no one's played yet like SF4.

I think spring or fall would be best, but maybe early fall would work for everyone? Like August? School usually starts late August, right?

The March date was a choice because that is the time the Socal Tourney has taken place (3 years running).
So it seems like the time frame that most VFDC'rs know of and usually attend

this is a great idea, would love to go witha bunch of VFer's. from my past experince going to japan, its not too expensive. i would say you could go to japan for 7 - 10 days and do it with about 2000. airfare during spring time is about 800 - 1000. food there is cheap and there are youth hostle that run about 25 bucks a night and hotels that range from 50 -100. if you plan it well, which shouldn't be a problem with all the people that have gone there from this board and the resourcse that we have now, you should be able to plan a great trip and keep it cheap. now i will tell you 2500 -3000 would be ideal for this but you can definitly keep at 2000 too. well i hope this happens sounds like a great idea.
