In terms of playing "star players"- MLG had a great idea when I went in Raleigh.

Kayane had like a 2-hr session where folks could get in line to play her. I finally did, then she stopped right before me. I would have gotten stomped since I don't play SC5 (and me not being a great player in general), but would have been nice.

It's probably hard on folks like Kayane though, as you can't let anyone win, and 2 hours of playing mediocre players will wear you down mentally to the point where a good player can surprise you.

Well, in all honesty. I just think a lot of people don't like VF5:FS enough even VF players. That makes for one sad situation. This is the first time VF in my years of fighting game playing has ever been "alright" in my mind. You know what happens to games that you think are just "alright."

Thank you. There are still some people in the FGC that have that mentality.

This, I think, is big. One reason I've played Magic for years on end is that I have a local group that meets every week where we just play. The general mindset is competitive, sure, insofar that people do want to play well and play the serious tournament formats, but apart from that it's just slinging cards and socializing. People come and go, it's not the kind of time commitment a four-round Swiss tournament is for example, even if you do end up spending that amount of hours in the end (most do).

I think there's a lot to be said for that. I'm trying to get my Magic-playing friends into SF4 and Smash because hey, it's fun (and Magic's price tag is getting more and more insane by the day - thanks speculators!). Something

Starcraft 2 players are slowly realizing is that the tournament scene cannot and will not be healthy in the long term without a solid base of casual players to pull from. SC2 is all about big tournaments and the past glory of Brood War, but the actual reasons for Brood War's popularity are nowhere in SC2. That, plus bad design and balancing decisions, are why that game is dying, and also why LoL is flourishing - it's just fun to play with friends. That attracts a lot of people, some of whom inevitably have the competitive spark to them.

So, casuals, casualscasualscasuals. Every week or every other week or so. At someone's place or at an FLGS or arcade near you(Friendly Local Game Store). Just get people playing, rest will take care of itself.

Every VF Tourney I have attended usually has casuals somewhere before, during or after the tournament.
For example, at SCR they will be opening the game up to Casual play before and after the tourney.
For SEGA Cup even though it has not been promoted by SEGA, there will be casuals happening during that entire week brought to you by the VF Socal Community.
Sega Cup should be a Vf Livestock type event for the players around the world to attend.

In regards to WNF. All of the games there hit a slump after EVO and when school started. Then you add a middle of the week type of event, a game that already had a small community, it would seem by logic the numbers would drop. The main issue is that we cannot get all of the players to show up at the same time. For example, sometimes we get people from SD, sometimes we get someone from Vegas, sometimes from OC. It is rare when they all show up on the same day.

It is not to say VF at WNF's is dead because we just had it there the past two weeks and from what I hear Friday Night Casuals may be something we are looking at attending as well.

Tourney's are awesome because you are around people with the same interest as you, and actually communicating with them, in person. Online is cool for shits-n-giggles, but being next to someone or in a crowd will always be better than sitting at your place with a headset on.

As far as the dead horse issue with people or liking FS, it's like that with any sequel/revision of any game, it's just that VF in the West is small so it's felt more than most other games. VF isn't bigger than the major games, but the biggest of the small games that went as popular either, and they haveore resources on how to play the game.

The FGC in this area has been flourishing over the last five years. Street Fighter has solid roots with regular meets and online streams, and BlazBlue/GuiltyGear/King of Fighters/Persona has a cult following also with their bi-weekly meetings.

The 3D side does have it's enthusiasm here, but not at the same numbers. Online does get good attention, were we started doing online brackets with an honour system in place to keep track of things. Tekken and VF both have a ladder, and online lobbies aren't hard to populate. Monthly meetings/beer casuals also tend to be fun.

Tournaments have been growing here, where fight for infinity in Saint John, New Brunswick has been drawing talent from Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and even a few players from Newfoundland. Some players from Maine have also expressed interest in making the trip North. The next event in March is looking to be one to remember. While VF doesn't have a headline tournament, the rivalries that start online tend to heat up well at these events, leading to money matches.

I would like to be more vigilant in my participation, however the chaos of family life tends to leave myself on the sidelines as a spectator. But when I choose to throw down, VF has been my poison, though Dishonored has been fun when my wife is watching.

I think there may be a difference in the mindset of 2D and 3D players, that makes it harder for the 2D gathering/tourney thing to work. I'm not sure what it is, or if it's the nature of the games themselves being more fun to play than spectate in comparison to 2d fighters.

If you can guarantee that If i lose, i wont have to be bored out of my mind, feeling like i wasted my time and gas money, showing up shouldn't be too much to ask for.

Yeah sure i can watch other people play, but i want to play too.

This is the problem i have with tourney's, I take a hour and a half drive to spend money and get bored when i could be doing something more fun or productive.

However often there are tourneys with great people. This are the ones ill eventually show up in (as i haven't been to any VF tourney's yet)

I would rather be at a party than an arena.

^Which tournies are you going to? Whenever I go to my monthly tournaments in Sydney, I actually have to take breaks from playing because I'm playing so much. The tournaments only take up a little bit of my time, 95% of the day is casuals with friends in various games.

    The ones in ohio?

The last one ive actually participated in was smash, SSF4AE, and third strike all at the same event when arcade legends was closing down in Cincinnati.

Yeah for reals. If anything I get too much playing time, where I dont play for a week after a major. Try bringing your own setup to play on. The more setups the more rotations can be had.

Thats the only way. People can ask a shitload of questions all day. But if they dont practice the advice they get on here, then whats the point of asking questions about combos, mixups, basics etc?

There's a lot of things you can improve on in single player mode and take with you offline. Once you improve in those areas, all that's left is online unless you live in any hubs that have offline sessions.

Ill tell you one thing... Put the CPU on its hardest level.. It will test your basics at disadvantage and lots of ugly situations.. If you can guess right against the CPU 30-40% of the time... its equivalent to about 85% of the time to a normal level player.. Also it will get you familar with your main in pressure situations and how to react to them accordingly. Knowing is half the battle. Stop worrying about combos if you don't possess the basics to get in position to use them. Share what you learned... show progress... like i said before "Help us Help you." Stop making stupid and irrelevant posts if you not putting anything to use.. Dojo is a powerful yet underused tool. It even has a recording tool.. A Freaking Record tool. It gets no better than that.

This a fucking Cop out are you serious? I disagree wholeheartly.. If you did'nt want to play serious you would'nt be here on this forum.. You'd play and go about your business win or lose. I have a Everyday life and part of that life is my disadain for losing but understanding its integral part of learning involving everything... This a perfect example of weak minded people looking for a shortcut... I was in school and treated myself to coming home and playing video games (SF2 in the 5 grade).. All fighters have the same general purpose... Don't get hit.
