Music: What are you listening to?

It’s funny; I have all of Radiohead’s albums accept for that live one you mentioned (True love waits, or something like that?) and ironically, their first; Pablo Honey. I probably go to HMV three times a year and buy my music in bulk, yet every time I go I end up buying CDs of new artists or always forgetting a certain album but can’t be bothered to go back.

The only artists/bands that I have the complete works of to date are Jamiroquai, Muse, Seal, Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Skunk Anansie and John Williams’ Star Wars soundtracks. But that’s a paltry sum in comparison. I either have a compilation CD or all but one of every other artist or bands work in my collection.

I really should get a decent mp3 player and just upload everything I have and download the rest.

Radiohead polarize their audience so much. OK computer is either "trash" or the "the best album ever". I'm one of the few in the middle groudn since I like it quite a bit and bought it only because of a friend's suggestion.

What Radiohead do for me is put the subtle, complex emotions to music. Like exasperation (Just, The Tourist) or exhaustion (We suck Young Blood, Fake plastic trees) or the mistrust of political spin (Electioneering, No Surprises), they can sum up many of my thoughts and feelings in the most uncanny ways.

OK Computer is an alright album. It’s not the second coming but it’s not so so either. The tracks from the album I mentioned above along with Karma Police and Lucky are top notch. It’s their most successful album so it’s become in for everyone to have an opinion on it and I’d wager that for many people it’s their first serious taste of the band.

That’s not a bad thing but I feel people miss out (big words for a guy who doesn’t own Pablo Honey I know, but bare with me) on the more sentimental, sincere and vulnerable The Bends. The Angst, depression and scepticism that radiates from OK Computer, I feel, is born from the pressure the band dealt with while trying to top the heartfelt anthems that they played to death before like My Iron Lung, High and Dry and my fave; Street Spirit (fade out).

I think the band find their collective courage as they experiment with Kid A and Amnesiac. Two albums that are very ethereal and cluttered respectively yet, by Hail to the Thief they’ve got their teeth back with 2+2=5 right off the bat. They’re latest album speaks volumes to me on how they’ve matured as musicians, lyricists and just their sound in general.

I don’t have an all-round favourite album, they all do something for me when I’m in a certain mood. Yet each album has its own anthems while the rest make good background music. OK Computer suits that description the best for me though.

    Damn, that was convoluted…

my friend and I used to listen to 'Nilsson Schmilsson' and 'son of Schmilsson' over and over again when we were kids (his mom's records). Nilson was a musical genius and we got to experience him with no preconceptions about music whatsoever and I'm very glad for that. Now that I am grown I think I have most every song and album he ever made. The john Lennon jams are quite tasty.

I would say OK Computer is my favourite Radiohead album simply due to the time it came out I was at college studying design and the creativity of it when it was released felt 'Dark Side of the Moon' by Pink Floyd to me personally (which I also love). Every track is different, ping ponging from avant garde Prog Rock (Climbing Up the Walls), Let it Be-era Beatles (Let Down), Rock (Electroneering), Spoken Word (Exit Music) and it also has IMHO a 'post-modern era' genius song in 'Paranoid Android'. The construction of the song, with 3 'seperate' parts is inspired by Queen's 'Bhoemain Rhapsody's. This remains my fave album by them because every track explores different styles of indie/rock, which is why the critic's went mad over it back in 1997 and why NME voted it the 'best album ever'.

Kid A and Amensiac are also amazing, 'Idiotique' off Kid A and 'Like Spinning Plates' off Amensiac are the stand out tracks IMHO off both albums and further explore experimentation, which most bands are scared off nowadays. 'There There' was the last decent song they released, plus having no guitar's in it proves they can write an indie song WITHOUT them.

Still think the Smiths were a better band than they will ever be though. But that's a WHOLE other story and I would be typing forever.

Gotta agree with Stroppa, 'Everything in it's Right place' is another Genius Radiohead song.

KT Tunstall, "Black Horse and Cherry Tree". Live version from her appearance on Jay Leno. Maybe I'm just a live version whore but her appearance on Leno was my first exposure to her and I went out the next morning to buy the album.

this version is performed only by herself and is layered by her recording and then looping voice, guitar, and tamborine all done live.
