So where did Sega go wrong with VF? Vf3? VF2 had a good marketing campaign and mad people played it at my arcade at least. I remember VF3's cabinets costing way to much. The lost hype between that and VF4 may have been a nail in the coffin or no? (Along with plummeting interest in general for fighters.)

VF4:EVO and FT had some major mistakes by Sega and you could see the franchise start to fold. Not releasing 4FT for any console was a poor decision and left room for 5R (and possibly 5FS) to remain arcade exclusive. Sega sued the Evolution tournament after EVO2003 to stop them from making a DVD with VF4:EVO footage which was incredibly shortsighted because EVO now does so much to promote FGs. Around that time they sued Beat Tribe for making DVDs of VF matches of Japanese arcade players, this being the same outfit that just had a 700 person tournament, way to reward your fans. And Yu Suzuki left as the head of the VF franchise as well.

VF5 was Japanese arcade exclusive when it came out and the new distribution model was that Japanese arcade operators could only rent the game. VF4FT had great scenes in Korea and China in arcades but that's over now because you can't get the latest VF games in arcades. VF5 PS3 being rushed to be a launch title was a colossal error because the game was pathetically unpolished (no online, no tutorials, awful Quest AI, can't be patched, etc.). The VSHG was mostly a failure as well when it was at retail due to the PCB issues (of course now the damn things are really expensive second hand). The VSHG could have been as successful as the MadCatz TE but Sega dropped the ball. Then of course VF5R not coming to consoles was disastrously idiotic especially in the wake of SFIV and the beginning of the fighting game revival on consoles. Poor community relations with international VF players persisted with Sega shutting down its Facebook and saying almost nothing of substance after the petition about 5R on consoles. Sega of America employees didn't even know what VF5R was.

And now of course VF5:FS has no presence at E3, EVO, Comic-Con, or anywhere else really but Japan's arcades. Pretty much everyone here assumes that the game is not coming to consoles. "We are unsure of the home market". Meanwhile FGs are basically booming again with all sorts of franchises getting in the mix. And just like last year we are waiting for Sega to make an announcement at TGS about VF's latest revision being ported to consoles. I'm not keeping my hopes up at all.

SEGA should just let someone like Atlus or ArcSys port the damn game. Would make things so much easier.

After reading EmpNova's post, I have to agree:

    Fuck you and die, Sega.

C'mon dude, Sega spent tons of money marketing VF5 and came up short.

    EVO?

    Beat Tribe?

    Yu Suzuki?

If VF5 had sold like hotcakes every imaginable iteration or combination of VF and other franchises would have hit the shelves. Jacky Bryant Racing? YEAHHHH! DLC on xboxlive for versions b., c. etc? You bet.

Did you ever consider that those great VF4FT scenes in China were maybe pumping tokens into bootleg setups?

    Never thought of that?

Never thought that these twin experiences of lost arcade revenue from bootlegging in China specifically and lost marketing revenue in the West and US especially prompted Sega to adopt a hunker down and survive the storm approach with regards to VF?

Of course you hadn't, because it's all got something to do with the VSHG and Yu Suzuki, Beat Tribe and EVO videos.

    GYHOYA. It's the fucking money.

    Ultimate truth.
I'm not going to argue about whether or not Capcom's recent fighters are quality or not...but to call Capcom lazy? C'mon.
    Seriousy? Lazy?
Since the announcment of SF4, Capcom has been making dreams happen and then some with titles like MVC3, 3S Online and then the recent announcement of Tekken vs Street Fighter. Seriously...Tekken vs Street Fighter? Who saw that one coming?
Back then, if you asked anyone about the possibility of any of the mentioned games, they'd laugh at you. Period.

Capcom deserves the ultimate form of props. And to those waiting on Darkstalkers, don't worry, it's coming. With the games Capcom has been releasing so far, anything can happen.

Still, it's a fact that THE greatest 3D fighter crown still fits nicely on Virtua Fighter, and nothing else.
But so far, I can't see how Sega is going to profit at all from releasing FS now. Capcom has a few monster titles coming out one after the other, and they are sure to grab attention of the mainstream consumers.
Even Playmore announced the new Samurai Showdown for consoles, and I don't see those guys being in any better financial shape than Sega.

Like JackB said, Sega needs to get down to the business and market that hoe. Put up some more online videos, saying "Virtua Fighter...better than Tekken" or something like that.

Oh, and that little Virtua Fighter/Street Fighter spoof sega released was funny for a minute, but guess which fighters are featured on G4' Evo special this year.

Marketing what? The PS3 version with no online? No amount of marketing would sell that piece of shit port. Is this your apologist attitude towards Sega. That they tried hard to market VF5? If they were actually trying then VF5 PS3 would have online modes, VF4:EVO tutorials, competent quest CPU, and the list could go on and on. Sega came up short when they made PS3 VF5 a garbage port.
Find a Chinese arcade distributor and email them about purchasing VF game parts. They have tons of old VF4/EVO/FT Naomi hardware and kits. Not bootlegs but actual retail kits. Hell talk to any international arcade distributor about acquiring old VF4 kits and see how many come out of China and Korea compared the rest of the world including Japan.

And you do realize that Sega operates a number of arcade gaming centers in China right? Hell Sega even owns an amusement park in Dubai themed after Sega IPs. What evidence do you have that China was mass pirating VF4 games?
Please try to be dumber. You think Sega sued EVO over the 2003 DVD over money? How much do you think James Chen was making from those things? Was EVO even turning $1 of profit from the entire event plus the DVD sales back in 2003? How much money could Sega possibly get from the sale of EVO2003 VF DVDs? You honestly think that Sega sued EVO because they thought that they could make money from doing so?

This is more about incompetence than money. The VSHG was a failure because Sega didn't understand how to test a PCB in an arcade stick properly. You see how in demand the VSHG is still? How people on SRK are highly competitive when someone is selling one? Sega should be producing those sticks continually but instead they are leaving money on the table due to sheer incompetence.

    I have a solution....
Why don't Sega have Capcom publish/distribute the damn game? I mean shit what else can go wrong?

Then again Capcom my change it up a bit to ensure profits.

Capcom will dominate market for the coming 5 years with SSF4, MVC3, SFvT, SFvDS, SMvC3, SSF4vT6.....etc

There is no chance for sega to compete
If sega release VF5FS in this coming 5 years they will sell nothing or as same as VF5 did back then in 2007

Then the only chance they got is 2015 or something far

I'm going to see if Sega is still stupid as hell and write them saying I have an intention of using Virtua Fighter vids in a tournament DVD I'm trying to sell. That's if they even reply.

What? They did? When? I didn't know it was being released when it was and i'm not the only person on this site to say so. Piss poor marketing is near enough the same thing as no marketing. The problem is they're idiots.
