Sat 29th Nov : Second Manchester Tournament

Not too much time to post now I'm afraid so I'll try and get the basics down:

FINAL STANDINGS:

1. Shaun (Jeff, Jacky)
2. Elite (Akira, Wolf, Goh)
3. Ade (Sarah /versus/images/graemlins/confused.gif, Kage)
4. Will (Goh)
5. Darius (Lion)
6. Chris (Akira, Aoi, Goh)

For those who want to know, we ran a league based system again as we had only 6 players. Everyone played each other once (first to 3 wins won) except the final league match which was Shaun Vs Andy in which we had first to 5 wins. After taking a 3-0 lead, Andy lost to Shaun 5-3 in the end. Somewhat ironic that the best two players if this "arcade" game in our group are pad players.

I'm afraid the next meet will have to be after christmas now (due to work, money and exams) but it'll give everyone a chance (me included for sure!) to get some practice in for next time. btw the palace stage is now made ILLEGAL to any slimadey Kage shenanigans and the controls will be :

square=
triangle=

so everyone PLEASE take note. (This includes you Darius, no messing roud with controls OR wallpapers!!!!! /versus/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif). If peeps are up for it we'll be playing for money too, to make it more intense. I'll post the full details whenever I get a chance.

I'm trying to convince a couple folk from here to make a trip down for the next gathering you guys have. I guess it depends closer to the time how everybody's schedule works out.

But it should be a giggle if it happens, Elite and I can get our Goh v Goh on.

The Palace is just a lame stage full stop. Horribly, horribly broken. We just skip back to character select when the random stage select spits it out now.

AAARRRRRRRGGGHHH!!!

Losing 5 in a row is VERY annoying, especially when you have to put up with random "nobody can stop me!" and "wanna fight again? you're way outta your league!" quotes all the way home.

Only myself to blame though since I apparently forgot about low throws and the low punch sabaki altogether. I think I'll stick to Goh next time.

Good games with everyone, seemed like everyone had improved since last time. Most notably Darius, your Lion should be killer by next time if you keep practicing /versus/images/graemlins/confused.gif.

Ade: You better do some hard training since the palace is banned next time /versus/images/graemlins/tongue.gif. You were actually looking impressive in some matches before you threw everyone over the low walls. Don't degrade yourself like that man lol.

Will: The first few fights I had against you were tough. You never throw! Well annoying to keep eating mid moves after every counter hit. Keep up the good work.

Chris: Enjoyed the Akira mirror match, but I've got to say your Aoi is far scarier than your Akira. Maybe you should switch your main for a while?

Had fun and don't really mind losing to Shaun since we're fairly evenly matched (even if I was 3 - 0 ahead /versus/images/graemlins/frown.gif) At least you'll have a better idea on how to defend against his scary Jeff for the next meet.


If Dan does come next time then I'm sure we'll be able to put together a few nice replays, providing there's any space of course.

Look forward to next time and the money idea sounds good, not too much the first time though. We should wait until our skill levels even out more before we play for alot otherwise it wont be fair.

P.S. I had a go on the stick while it was just me, Shaun and Ade. I got OWNED! Very worrying, I'm still gonna get one I think but it will take me a long time to get back up to the standard I'm at now with the pad.

Good to hear all the feedback.

FADED: Yeah man that'd be cool. I'll say now that the next one we hold will definaelty be after christmas though I've no idea when.

I'll post back with loads more details as soon as I get the chance.

Ok I don't actually have all the sheets of wins-loss etc with me know and I can't recall them all so I'll just make a few notes about people:


Myself: Well...shoddy again as last time. My execution on a lot of stuff has messy as was my throwing/throw escaping game. Didn't really settle with one char and as last time performed marginally better in the warm up matches than in the actual league ones. Yeah Andy I must admit I started playing Aoi long before Akira. Only problem is I haven't used her properly for a good while and so couldn't recall that many useful strats with her. I think for next time I'll definately be using a combination of Aoi, Goh and Akira (maybe Kage/Pai). It was only Andy and Shaun that felt the wrath of mid reversals and inashis!!!

Andy: Strong as usual though I didn't get to play your Goh with either my Akira or Goh. We'll have to do some more of those mirror matches next time and I'll get my Aoi back up to speed too. Hopefully watching some of the replays will give me a chance of knowing what to do against all the Wolf stuff you were doing too. btw we forgot to save some of the replays onto your card!

Shaun: Nice Jeff and Jacky again. With a bit more practice my Lei and Aoi my be able to challenge you a little more.

Ade: Damn man I can handle our Akira-Kage matches (as long as theres high walls!!!!) but that damn Sarah is too frustrating. Think I'll use Aoi against her next time and inashi all that garbage away /versus/images/graemlins/grin.gif. We haven't had an Akira mirror match for a while too, we'll have to do that soon.

Darius: Yeah better than last time and still frustrating. btw those s I was skanking against you in one of our fights were meant to be ironic. I don't think you got the joke /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif. I'l be better prepared for you next time though. Nice one for holding off the s and s for a while.

Will: Nice Goh man. Didn't get to face him with my Goh or to see any of your Akira but it was good to meet you. A few nice flowcharts here and there and a cheap CHEAP ringout man!!!! /versus/images/graemlins/grin.gif As it was your first meet you'll hopefully be better prepared for next time as now you know you peeps play as.

Cheers for everyone who made it, even in the shit weather conditions. From now on I think we'll make the Gamestation the meeting place as its nice and warm!

Sorted out all those replays now and I've got 2.5MB spare on the main card again. I'll post more when I get a chance.

I meant to ask, did you end up saving the final? The last round was tense when he had me down to bugger all health and he had almost his whole bar (Giant swing + wall soon rectified that). If you did save it then don't delete it and I'll save it on my card next time since it will be funny watching me cower in the corner.

P.S. If it saved then can you tell me what he finished me off with? It's been bugging me all day. Low kick maybe?

Yeah don't worry I saved it as FIN to be sure I know what file it is. I deleted most of the crappy ones we had left over from last time. I actually watched it last night. Basically as you say you had hardly any health and you were moving around and that and he went for a you blocked the first, did something then he 'd again to finish your life bar. Well something like that but it was definately LP to finish. /versus/images/graemlins/confused.gif

He's such a skank when he's winning, I'm feeling better today though since I just 5 - 0ed his Jeff. I think I'm going to stick with Goh next time but my Akira is improving alot now so who knows?

Some things I noticed about your Akira play Chris (if you're not interested then just tell me to shut it), you seem to like to throw out huge moves alot of the time like the yoho. This probably comes from playing the AI alot but a human isn't really going to eat too many of those out of nowhere. I'd try and focus on your build ups and pokes since if you're always leaving yourself throw counterable then your opponent isn't going to feel pressured. You can obviously execute the big combos because I've seen you do it so I think it's just the application of them you need to work on (you can do bigger damage combos than I can).

Another thing is you don't seem to throw an awful lot which makes it easy to defend against you. Akira's strikes are pretty much all mid or high and linear so if the risk of being thrown isn't there then there's nothing to stop the opponent guarding or evading everything you throw out.

I definitely don't think you should quit Akira or anything because you've already got all the commands down and that's the hard part about playing him. Having said that your Aoi did look pretty tasty (fucking mid level reversal)

Just my observations anyway, ignore them if you don't agree.

Ive started to use Pai. So next time ill use Pai and Lion. If I use Lion, it'll be back to basics aswell. I used to beat people alot more when I used to throw out basic shit all the time. That last meet, I spent the whole time trying to set people up, and I dont think it worked even once. I'll see how I get along with Pai anyway..

Oh, I did notice you were doing the low punch thing to be ironic, its just that im used to it, Adey does that kind of thing to me nearly every time i play him, but its no big deal. /versus/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

It sucks that you're giving up on Lion, I was impressed by how much better you were this time around. The low punches and kicks get predictable if you overuse them, just keep practicing and you'll keep improving. The only reason you lost to Ade was because he picked Palace, for the majority of the fights you had with him you were pissing all over his kage. TFT does seem to be a problem for you so maybe you could learn which moves you're throw counterable after and make it a habit to spam in + for the escape.

As you can see I'd hate for you to give up just because you didn't win straight away, but trust me, the stuff you were pulling was good and a little more practice is all you need.

Lion is cooler than Pai anyway /versus/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Ill definately never give up on using Lion, but it was frustrating that most of the new stuff I worked into my game didnt work all that well. Thats good advice about Adeys TFTing, ill try doing that against him next time.

Errrr come on dude change set up!!!!!! Andy and Shaun both re learnt the set up to play at these events so you should too! Its not soo hard and seen as though you'll be using Pai as a new char anyway it'd be good to start using her properly (I mean with the proper controls). If you wnat any advice on her I can help you out. Just be prepared to look for counter hits for float combos and use her inashis a lot.

Ahh well, there's always Sarah's and Akira's stages! Oh and don't worry about my kage, I've learning some new stuff with him (WATCH THIS SPACE).

Got some new setups, using jumanji a lot more, rolling etc etc, but been working on the max damage tft combos for all my opponents (I can go 78 vs goh, 76 (I think) vs lion and the 'traditional' 74 vs wolf and jeff and akira.

As a bonus I have a 'cool' tft combo which work's up to Akira TFT, knee, b+P (Hold) Jumanji, P,K,K (69).

My standard of play was OK on the day (messing about with Jacky a bit, ironically I'm using him and Lau loads since then), but am concentrating on Kage MUCH more than Sarah (Chris and Shaun are probably happy about that!). I find Sarah a LOT more limited than Kage (Kage is the Ling of VF IMO, Evasion-wise, I'm suprised Darius isn't using him).

Shame WJ and Nakura couldn't make it, as well as the Dan guy who could put our matches on the internet.

That final is V.good match as I watched it back.
Oh as a side note, I got the face paint for Akira (At last!)

I'll be sure to get my Aoi, Goh, lei etc up to speed on how to deal with Sarah if its the last thing I do! May even use a bit of Lau just for kicks (is it ok if I use your Lau file Ade?). If you don't post again have a merry vf ing chrimbo......SELECTA!

About the setup. Ill try that config tonight. It seems more suited to using a stick though. My setup seems to make a lot more sense with a pad. It only takes a couple of minutes to change the controller setup anyway. I dunno dude..... /versus/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /versus/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

It's not that hard to relearn dude, I'd only had 2 days practice before the first meet and that was only with Goh. I picked Akira on the day (whom I hadn't even tried with the new setup) and still managed to win so you'll do fine. Chris' controls are actually much better than what I had before but I was using R1 as guard so I think I just had a really bad setup to begin with.


Shun watch: Shun file is up to 5th dan, been playing for 2 days with him. He's a pimp. I might use him at the next one.

Come on man the setup we use is THE setup as far as VFing goes. What would you do if you entered some real big tourney down south say in an arcade???? The setup is the way VF should be played and the way its always been. Check the sign on the command lists at this site and look to see how G P and K are layed out. Thats the way they should be done!

I HATE LAU! He's a cheap fucker. You're only allowed to use kick and/or guard if you pick him, it's the rules.
