I think your analogy, and correct me if I'm wrong, is that in Japan, they've got it right in making VF the fighting game of choice because it is the better fighter, and in other areas (particularly the West), we have it wrong because we celebrate games like Tekken, which you seem to infer is inferior. I disagree with this assertion for no other reason than on some other forum there is probably some kid lamenting about how unpopular his beloved Tekken is in Japan and how right the West is for realizing the true beauty of Tekken. It's a simple matter of taste. Rarely will you find that what is popular is so for the reasons that attracted you to the game in the first place. OPM calls VF4 the greatest fighter of all time for Kumite, not because it's deeper, or a better fighter than say, MK: Deadly Alliance.

Is Final Fantasy X-2 the best game of the last 2 years? According to the Japanese public it is, because it's the best selling during that time by a healthy margin. Or maybe is it just a game that strikes a chord with Japanese people for completely tertiary reasons?

No I'm not saying there is a right or wrong answer to liking depth in a fighting game or not.I should have openly stated that this is MY OWN view point on the situation.I 'm not going to start debating over vf versus tekken or anything like that as it's pointless and I play them both any way.I was mearly trying to show how popular vf is in the east and that the amount of depth to the game does not deter people from it, it attracts them to the game which imo it should. /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The way things are going for Capcom right now even they might have some very serious problems in the near future...

Actually, those companies I mentioned are the ones who have either died (SNK, Atari Games), in real trouble (Sega), or headed that way (Capcom, Nintendo). It seems like we're losing all the mainstays of videogames in favor of the few companies with the biggest pockets (EA, Sony, Microsoft). Aauugh!!

I totally agree. Is namco wrong for making Tekken and SC more popular in North America and Europe? No, they want their games to be accessible to a large number of people and those are big videogame markets. Sega made an effort with VF4 and I think that' s the route they should take. Deep doesn't mean that beginners shouldn't be able to enjoy the game.

That review was very good, and the uk games magazines should LOOK, LISTEN and TAKE HEED.
There's no question that vf4/evo take's more time to master than tekken/soul calibur, but does it make it less interesting for me? NO WAY! Although I've loved the vf series since 2, so I've like the character's in vf for a LONG time, the irony is, I'm still CRAP, but does that stop me playing? The whole point of fighting games is to play, have fun, get beat and IMPROVE. If I beat everyone all the time, I would of quit playing fighting games altogether. I LOVE the challenge of learning one character in a scarily indepth way. (The record breakers theme is singing in the back of my head!).

It's true, I do wish more people would play vf4/evo, but tekken/soul calibur/street fighter will always appeal to the lowest common denomanator much more easily, so just go with the flow! /versus/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
