Heh...I was just talking with Baobab on IRC about this...

For a city with good VFers, and a good number of them - it's a real shame that you guys have absolutely zero drive to get off your asses and organize either a) league type nights or b) tourneys. A real freakin shame. And, imo, a disgrace.

You see, everyone wants to have what the japanese have - a good competitive VF scene, right? Well, do you all think that it's going to jump up out of the blue and land of your laps? Uhm, reality check, no. So, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!! It's retarded to think that part of the downfall to having a shit VF scene is that people are so fucking lazy.

Sal, right now, all your little statements of 'it won't happen' just contribute to this whole mess. And that, too, is a shame.

It *can* happen. And it *could* work. But if everyone's too much of a pussy to take charge and get something going, then VF Evo will die and wash up as another 6-months-too-late PS2 gathering.

    frustrated,

heh, you adapting your diction to what you think works best for new york guys?

New york organized (as you well know) an awesome gathering and mini-tournament. Insulting them in an effort to better the scene is backwards and ineffective. You think anyone sits at home, waffling and on the fence about "Should I go play VF tonight?" and then they say "fuck if I don't I'll fall behind in league night point rankings"?

How many times a year do you expect tournaments to happen? Did anyone attend NYG3 who wasn't already into VF?

yeah, i understand your fustration and all but sadly that's the way it is, we've been trying to organize stuff before but it just never works out cause of people's schedules and stuff like that. so we said fuck it and we just play. lets face it the "glory" days of usa vf scene are gone (vf2 era), VF in usa will never be like japan, ever. i got out of that cloud long ago. its mainly cause of the arcade scene in general. arcades are dead. im fine just playing vf with friends, no need to convince others of what they're missing, their loss.

"all your little statements of 'it won't happen' just contribute to this whole mess. And that, too, is a shame. "

hmm maybe i dont remember but i think this is the first time i post about this, where are ALL my little statements?

anyway, i do admire your optimism for getting VF to be more like japan's but im just being realistic, we sorta tried...but, shit aint happening.

    take care.

ps, sorry for my spelling.........(yeah right!! /versus/images/icons/tongue.gif )

Hey Powerpuff Owen, thank you for insulting NYC VFers. You know some people have to work for a living and have other interests. Well maybe except for the FLcrew, those guys seem to live off VF.

Ha ha. Like Japnese VF scene?? I must say that they don't do a mini tournament and taking stats as a main activity. Some people here misunderstand that since they see only the movies from trounaments only. What they do more is just to play VF daily. What is the point of tournamnet, say weekly or biweekly, when people don't get to play enough. The first thing they need is just play. And, that's the way to try to get close to Japanese VF scene.
Also, how many decent players are there in NY, or in US? I don't see much point trying to keep records of things. It's just not worth it, unless people want to think that they are getting close to Japanese VFers by keeping records. Even in Japan, lower-ranked players don't see much point playing in tournaments, as they know what they need is just keep playing. And, knowing how good people are here, it is just for self- satisfaction and reassurance. Of course, if people can get more motivated to play by having them, it may be a good thing for those who do.
Anyway, people in NY have different schedule so even in that aspect, it is not possible.

It's not about how *good* we are in North America. It's easy to say that Japanese players are better - done. But what about having a competitive scene *here*? I could care less what lower ranked people in Japan think - I just think that *some* competition in North America would do the VF scene wonders. It's old news that the Japanese are better, Hiro. We know this already. Considering 95% of us in North America will never ever play them, it doesn't matter how good they are. We should focus on our own scene, be it *decent* or not. My point was that their scene is *competitive* whereas ours is not.

I posted anew to discuss this whole viewpoint away from NYs jamboree thread...respond there if you want to discuss this further....

Stats were meant to be more than just keeping track. Toronto has been trying to create an organized community and just coming out for games and going home didn't seem to draw more people so we thought, "lets organize league nights, keep track of peoples progress and use it to seed tournaments so we don't have to have round Robins all the time".

The idea was that with a definite purpose and plan we could work better to realizing our goal which was more players playing competitively. The further idea was that if we could interest other VF communities in doing the same or similar thing we could get something big going on, with each group getting more players preparing themselves, trying to get better and eventually meeting.

I think Hiro is right, that we need more playing time and less tournaments but the thing to understand is that Toronto has only had one EVO tournament (and that was just an excuse to get freeplay). The rest were just gatherings where we tracked wins and losses.

To the end of helping players get better, Llanfair and I have been discussing doing the freeplay event and using it as a low cost mechanism for players to get better. where the main aim is to play and learn not just aim for the top spot.

I think this portion of the the NYC thread has been somewhat constructive. I'll be posting this in Llan's tournament thread and encourage anyone with input on how best to foster groups of players and increase their playing strength. Keeping in mind that not everyone has a PS2 to practice on.

The regular players at CF always show on Friday's. Only problem is the seasoned veterans hardly show up. Hiro got total newbies playing on his last visit showing off his Wolf and Goh skills.<on my behalf /versus/images/icons/tongue.gif > NYC is just not so vocal here because most of us dont have ready internet access. Adam has mini-gathering at his place at times and I plan to have them at mine once I get some sticks.

Back in VF2 days, we were kids in school and had plenty of free time. We'd play everyday. Most of the vets have priorities nowadays and such and NYC just doesnt have that many players to have daily play. I know plenty of admirers but VF scares them cuz of the learning curve. We might get some more players if we get the vs. cabinet. /versus/images/icons/smile.gif

hehe, actually i think its cause we dont use the net (jamboree) for our meetings, its kinda "dumb" posting what time we should meet when all we gotta do is USE THE PHONE! HAHAHAH /versus/images/icons/grin.gif . since we live pretty close to each other .

    Re: [nycHOTNESS] EVO

Surprise: Almost every Saturday morning we have Asian VF4 EVO players show. It is night time to the visitor. That's why they go to eat dinner when NYC is sipping coffee. With rare exception you will not be disapointed at the competition of visiting VF4 players. Also this is when YW practice their dance steps in sheer nothing outfits that glimmer with sweat as they strip to one thin layer and dance in trance. @@ VF Coffee and a bean bun. Dancing babes surround the EVO goodness. /versus/images/icons/cool.gif Oh Yea! There are more VF4EVO players passing through in AM then at any other time. Be there.
