    * (Parenthesis) indicates double counting that was incorporated. For example, while 14 Kages made the semis actually only 12 distinct players made it--Koedo and Felix appear twice each in the semis. Similarly there are only 5 distinct Vanessa players instead of 6 as Kurita appears twice. Same for Wolf with Kumichou Wolf twice. Incredibly, Honolulu made the semis four times as Lau, so really there were only 4 Lau players that made it. Sadly for Honolulu, he only won once in the final four.

Good for Pai, moving up the charts. Jeffry finally made an appearance in the semis. The number of Jacky players blows my mind. Note the gap between Jacky and Kage is about the same as Kage and the next most popular, Pai.

Was it also like this for VF4? I know Jacky is and always was the most popular for tournaments, but we never really counted before.

While I know tournament representation != tiers it is still an important indication nevertheless of balance and usage.

What a very disheartening ringout in the first round - literally from about the center of the ring. I understand it was against Pai, but wow that would piss me off.

What ever it takes man.... what ever it takes....

Man I really feel bad for Honolulu and Kurita... they really want to qualify, but just couldn't do it.

I agree, I just meant to point out the frustration one could feel from getting rung out from that position.

Here here. For VF5 I'm really looking forward to trying out Vane and Brad, but none of them are making it through. Go Kurita!

Only one Akira got into the tournament so far. I think that's quite surprising really.

    Jerky:
    Ringout from hell indeed...

Jacky and Kage are good no doubt.

Jacky seems stronger overall with pretty much complete striking game and upped throwing game since FT. Some genius at Sega apparently thought his elbow string options weren't good enough already, so they "improved" it by adding [6][P][P][P]+[K] which strikes mid. The iaigeri kick is also a very powerful tool in the hands of capable Jackys.

Kage seems weakened on the surface with lowered damage on TFT and [2_][3][P], but his new stance just tears you a new asshole. He also has more full circular options now, [3][P] isn't as weakened as it might seem.

However, the prime reason there are so many of these two characters in the qualifiers is simply because there as usual are seemingly millions of Jacky and Kage players around. Apparently the top tier in VF5 is Kage, Jacky, Brad and Lei Fei, the latter two has together only managed one spot in the finals.

Yeah, this is much better! Good list--there's a nice distribution across all the characters. Even El Blaze, the least popular character, had good representation, and this clearly explains Jacky's and Kage's appearances in the semis.

I'm of the same thinking with Zero in that the next step would be to calculate win-loss for the above, but I don't think we could simply take winners of tournaments divided by the number represented. Instead, it should be win-loss according to every match. However I'm guessing we don't have those numbers...

So nevertheless, looking at the list Myke posted is a great relief to me.

P.S. Honolulu Lau made the semis FIVE times! He was so so so close to making OT5...ouch, I really feel for him. He's a really good player too.

He has one more shot correct? Isn't there a last minute qualifier for the 32nd spot the day of the main tourney?

He does, there's a 128-people qualifier on the tourney day... One person qualifies. /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif
