I find the visceral reaction towards the PS3's controller to be amazing. Would a person actually make a decision about whether or not to purchase a console and its library of games based on....the controller?? Aesthetics aside, if you try to imagine holding such the controller...I actually think it'll be a lot more comfortable than the current Dualshock.

As for VF5...I'd bet money on a 2006 release. No doubt it's been in development for a while.

Well to be honest that is exactly the reason that I didn't buy an Xbox, because of the controller. So yeah the controller is an important part of the console for me. However, is they do decide to incorporate that controller Sony at least should allow the current PS2 controllers to be allowed for the new PS3, which I'm thinking that it will, so it's all good. /versus/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

i personally don't mind how the controller would look, it's how it feels that really matters.
never judge a person by their appearance, same with the controller.

The PS3 controller, aka "The Dildo Boomerang," looks like it was created by some Sony nerd-fanboy using 3D workshop on his Mac.

Like some ppl said, you can't really judge the controller by just looking at it. I remember the first time I saw the the N64 and even the original Playstation pads I didn't like the way they looked but they both turned out to be great, (comfort-wise) and at the end that's what really matters. I also don't like this new design but I'll be stupid to let that dictate whether or not I should by the system especially without even holding it and testing it.

Hmm, I probably should have mentioned that the feel of the controller is my MAIN reason why I didn't get an Xbox. Sorry about that, my bad. But to be honest, I have played with controllers that are like the PS3 controller and I can honestly say that I did not feel comfortable using it. And judging by how the shape and form is, it probably will be like my previous experience.

I still think Sony should change the controller. My cousin has a $10 pc controller that looks exactly like that and it's O K.

    New Consoles

Actually, the 2nd Xbox controller is nice. The first one was the worst controller of all consoles in the last 15 years.

    I personally rate the controllers:

    1. Gamecube
    2. (Newer) Xbox
    3. DualShock

But really, all of these are decent. I am skeptical about the Dildo Boomerang, however.

I would like to see either MS or Sony go down in the console wars. With the new generation of systems all having hardware parity, what do MS and Sony bring to the table? All of the PS2 games could have existed on GC or Xbox and probably have been better. Now that Xbox will not automatically boast the best hardware, how will MS fare?

I'm looking forward to the new Nintendo controller because they always come up with something interesting. I really don't think Nintendo is leaving the business any time soon and I believe that either Microsoft or Sony will leave first.

If the Killzone 2 footage is actually what the PS3 is capable of rendering in realtime, then Microsoft is in big trouble. The PS3 will clearly be the most powerful system on the market IF the cell technology lives up to the hype. That puts Microsoft in the awkward position of not having the most powerful system (which is a big marketing advantage for the current xbox), so it makes sense that they're putting a heavy emphasis on xbox live with the xbox360. We'll just have to wait and see if the game library is as diverse as Sony's this time around, so it will be an interesting year.

I think Microsoft was in the interestingly unfortunate position of showing actual games in development, while Sony was very content to have a show almost completely consisting of, well, fakes. From IGN:

    [ QUOTE ]

IGN: Is the Killzone sequence a fair example of what people can expect from realtime gameplay on PlayStation 3?

Jan-Bart (Guerilla Killzone PS3 designer): Yeah, it's basically a representation of the look and feel of the game we're trying to make.

I think the PS3 is probably capable of delivering an experience very close to what we're seeing in these mock-ups. I also don't think the 360 is that far behind from a technological standpoint. The latest PR spin is that all of the 360 games shown were running on Alpha development hardware, which is only about 33% as powerful as the actual 360. What I do know is that as a showgoer, I was very excited to see games actually up and running and playable on 360 hardware. The PS3 stuff for me was just glimpses into an indeterminate, but certainly awe-inspiring, future.

The pad to the PS3 looks ok, kinda looks like the MS Sidewinder series to me. Didn't really like the feel of it tho. I still think the PS2 pads are the best all rounder, the xbox pad is the best for FPS's and 3D roaming games. Haven't used the gamecube pad much tho.

The Kill Zone 2 trailer was mighty impressive and it did look like a mixture of CGI and in-game, It looked more in game near the end when the gun was finally shown in the FPS mode. If that is all in game then DAMN! the other 2 will have a tough race ahead of them with all the gfx fan boys out there.

I'm still rooting for the PS3 to win this war, they got the better companies and games to back them up. PS3 all the way with Nintendo ruling the portable market as usual /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

How can you guys even like the GC controller? In my experience, it's the most akward controller ever. All the buttons are haphazardly placed all over the unit and their configuration is by no means logical. And what is the deal with that TINY right trigger button? Playing games other than Mario or whatever 1st party themed games is more of a challenge that it should be. How would you play the likes of Tekken or VF or SF efficiently? Even FPS and sports games are very difficult to play.
The GC controller might be optimal for a handful of games, but it is definitely not nearly as versatile as the dualshock2 or even the xbox controller.

The GC controller was ok, but not my favorite. Something like this could change the industry though:

This picture may just be a fantasy, but Nintendo is being very mysterious at E3 by not revealing the revolution controller to the public yet. This leads me to believe that they have something totally different from what Sony and Microsoft are offering. The release of the recent Nintendo "ON" videos is very reminiscent of the ilovebees.com and ourcolony.net. campaigns, and Nintendo has acquired some interesting new patents recently. We'll just have to wait and see what's revealed in the next few months.

Here's an IGN interview with Shigeru Miyamoto that's pretty interesting. He talks about withholding information about the new controllers for fear of the ideas being stolen just like the last time (N64 analog stick, rumble feature, etc):

the ps2 controller is really the only one where all of the buttons/both analog sticks are used effectively.

Exactly my thoughts as well. The first time I had my experience with GC was when a friend of mine brought it over and we were going to play Bloody Roar 3 and it was SO dofficult to play it. I also tried playing SC2 with GC and it was very awkward and difficult. On the other hand, I played the same exact games on PS2 and my performance was WAY better. I don't know about the rest, but I think you have to be double jointed in your hands to play with the GC controller.

That'd be too pimp imho. Yeah the controller would suck for fighters, but who the fuck plays with controllers anyway?

Wouldn't mind trying with that tho'. I could flail my arms while playing, looking like a the 'cos player' player at arcades.

If you saw the G4 interview with the "Regginator" he said that each Nintendo system had differnt design for the controllers and to imagine something that would let you play all the old Nin. games and the new ones.

My friend sent me a link to the GB Micro before I heard about Nintendo's announcement about Rev playing NES, SNES etc games.

The first thing I thought when I saw the Micro was: "wow, that looks like some high-tech NES controller with a screen in the middle."

Not sure on the size of the Micro compared to the old-school NES controller, but it would be interesting to be able to use the Micro as a controller when playing NES games on the Revolution.

I was taken aback by just how much the new PS3 controller has in common with the ergonomics of the Dreamcast controller. Sure, it's got less bulk on its mid-section (no VM unit), but the design seems to be based around a similar 'whole handed handling' concept.
