Well, this rumored update details would address some of what I felt was very lacking on the PS3. Particularly:

    -Password-protected user accounts (seriously...)
    -[Full] setting
-RSS features (more likely to use RSS features on PS3 than PSP)
    -Sample Rate
    -Themes/Wallpapers
-Videos being played sequentially (what kind of media device can't do this?! The PS3 until they update properly...). Hope they have sorting options.
-XMB access during gameplay (a big one)
    -Custom Avatars (yay)

Hope these turn out to be true.

Though there is a big WTF for: "Support for PLAYSTATION®3 format software titles has been expanded."

Same. But like I said, apparently "Leah" (if that is her real name >.>) is always right. Someone who knows her history wrote: "Leah does the update threads for Playstation underground, the official US Playstation site. It's not a matter of it being fake as it is a of matter of when it will happen."

Still, I'll take it with a grain of salt. For all we know "accessing the XMB" may still not let us read messages or play music. It could very well be in the early stages allowing us to only look at pictures... o_0

Hey, with Sony, anything is possible. XD

I think it's similar to PSP in that certain games will only run using the newest firmware at the time of the game's release (but games will come with the newest firmware on the disk). Or, it could just be the whole non-region games thing. IIRC, some U.S. games (CoD 3 I think?) didn't work on European consoles, so it could be referring to that...Bah, who knows.

I think the XMB access during gameplay will pretty much just mean being able to message/chat during gameplay and checking up on the background downloads.

It'll be nice if they can get the system to really multitask (but even nicer if developers figure out how to really cut down on the load times on a lot of games :p).

Some games requiring a firmware update to run is probably inevitable.

    Apparently the info was...fake?

Weird. She never says flat out that the info was fake. She's also under NDA until the 17th (after Gamer's Day) and is now probably trying to cover her ass...

The only really BIG thing about this update is the in game XMB. The others are quite small (useful/fun) updates that shouldn't be hard for Sony to implement at all.

Plus, if this was a hoax, it was definitely well planned. Hacking into her account (like I said before, Leah apparently always does this and is very accurate), then posting what seems to be a not only very accurate and reasonable update, but the message itself seems very professional. >.>

And, like I said before, she's under NDA until after Gamer's Day (the 17th) so she would be in some serious trouble if she got caught posting that. Too many coincidences, I think, for this to be fake.

But I'm probably just grasping... >.<

According to Kotaku, the original source that Leah had gave was a site that never gives firmware details. The site also apparently took it down rather quickly/never had it up in the first place.

So my guess is Leah posted it and gave a fake source (that site) to protect her real source. Her source was still discovered by Sony and is now most likely in deep shit. Now she's covering her ass to protect her source and herself from the Sony assassins.

    One could only assume...

Or, the site had in fact posted the details of the firmware update early. They quickly realized their mistake and fixed it. Then Leah, realizing she would get screwed over royally if she turned out to be the one that leaked it to the World quickly recanted her post on the forum saying it was a "hacker".

In any case, I smell a conspiracy!

PS3 firmware 1.80 looks to be awesome!

Sony has announced that the latest version of the PlayStation 3 firmware - available to download on May 24 - upscales PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games and DVD movies to full 1080p HD resolution.

Firmware 1.80 also enables users on a home network to use the PS3 to view images, listen to music or play videos, which are stored on their DLNA3 devices (including PCs and laptops) elsewhere in the house.

The PSP's Remote Play function is also set to be improved thanks to the firmware update and PSP owners can now access their PS3 from anywhere in the world - as long as they have a broadband connection and firmware 3.50 for the PSP, which is available at the end of May.

Finally, firmware 1.80 includes the ability to print photo images stored on PS3's hard disk drive or inserted storage media to a selection of Epson printers via the USB connection.

    Update 1.80 is out now!

720p Blu-ray playback confirmed!!! Be sure to grab it ASAP!

EDIT: If you want to do the media sharing thing (to play files that are on your PC on your PS3), download TVersity.

Remember though, the video files on your PC still need to be supported by the PS3 to be able to play. =(

Just to let people know, 1.8 messed with with my online play until I disabled the media share option. Anyone else have problems?

A guide on installing Linux on your PS3. This has the potential to open up your ps3's digital media playing ability (install VLC and away you go!)

One drawback from this particular linux version is the lack of WLAN support. So, ethernet only.

This thread really needs to be updated. >_<

Firmware 1.90 was released last week (I think last week), and Sony confirmed that in-game XMB will be in the next major update (I'm guessing that means 2.0). So I think it would be a good idea to update it now in preparation for 2.0.

Did anyone update to V2.0 yet?

    Poppa Well-Known Member

    Yup.

No in game XMB, but you get an information overlay on the XMB, custom themes as well as the ability to change the background, remote play wake-up feature, a new PSN category which has the account management and the Playstation Store bag. The ability to organize games and videos and stuff into folders (much more organized like that). Not sure what else. I think that's it.

I won't say it was a bad update, but I was certainly expecting more (specifically in game XMB).

Poppa, just curious, but what would one get from having an in game XMB?

    I'll probably update mine tonight.

Really depends on how far Sony goes with it. Similar to the guide button on the 360, you can bring up the in game XMB mid game to perhaps use your own music play list (custom soundtracks for any and every game like the 360 has).

Even if Sony doesn't go as far as that, just having access to the friends list would be a huge benefit. Ever get a message while playing a game? No longer would you need to exit to read and respond to it.

It can also perhaps be used to access the settings tab. That way, you can mess with, for example, your bluetooth settings for whatever reason (maybe you'd want the audio to output through your TV instead of the headset in case someone is saying something funny and you want whoever's around you to hear >.>). Or if the overhead display (the one that tells you if you get a message or when a friend signs on) gets annoying, you'd be able to turn it off mid game. =P

I.e. In game XMB can give you access to your music, friends list and settings. While they may not seem like a big deal, IMO they make a world of difference both in regards to the usability of the system and the enjoyment I can get out of the games available for it (custom soundtracks is always a nice bonus /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif).

Man did people hype this update all over the net. It took them this long to change themes? Give me a break, psp has been already doing this for months. I'm guessing we will all have to wait for home release.
