It's something i try not to think about anymore. It's all rather confusing. Matter that became self replicating and self sustaining. Even more than that, you probably have very little of the particles you were born with in your body right now.

Purpose? To make more and better versions of ourselves. Seems to be what we're pr-programmed to do, and humanity is very good at adapting to or changing the environment to make this easier.

Significance? I the universal or even galactic scheme of things, no. We're too small and everything else is too big. I just don't think humanity will last long enough to do much of significance. I doubt we'll even outlive the earth.

    well 2 things
    1. We are all assuming that the universe is for us. What if its for the jellyfish. I've been reading this book called "Ishmael" still in the beginning of it but basically where selfish and we believe the universe revolves around us...

    2. I've been pondering this lately actually. I was watching this sci-fi anime called Ergo Proxy where robots are very similar to us and have the same level of intelligence but they are programmed to obey us. Basically it made me wonder... We only do what we do, because we are programmed to do so.

Basically we are trying to survive, advance technology etc, just because there's a little instinct programmed in our DNA to tell us to do so...
There's nothing innnately good about us dominating the universe lol...
So we might as well just do what were programmed to do...

No matter how smart we get... we won't do anything unless we are programmed to do it.

This poses interesting questions like.. If we could reprogram our drives, then what if we programmed ourselves to just want to lay there in peace or something. Then it would be easy as hell to be happy lol

Not if they're all miles apart they don't. Given the level of tech at the moment i'd be hard do do anything to the world that would have an effect of 10,000 years or more. Not very long. We're not very good at keeping ourselves going either.
It's estimated that we've existed as we are now for about 100,00 years. How many civilisations have lasted longer than 10% of that?

    LOL 10,000 years u kidding?
we have NUCLEAR BOMBS!!! we could impact the earth for a very long time..
not to mention EXTREMELY deadly viruses and bio-warfare. and the pollution we cause prob has a pretty big effect too.
we ALREADY wiped out a HUGE number of animals, and thats gonna leave a PERMENANT mark on the planet.

not to mention we transformed alot of the environments into cities etc...

I think people are overstating our species influence by how uninhabitable they could make the planet for themselves.

Nope. I'm talking about the long game. If humanity was suddenly removed from the earth they'd be no sign of us after a 10 thousand years. No cities would still be standing and forests we cut down would grow back, etc.

We could wipe out a significant amount of surface life, but it's unlikely we'd get it all. Even if we did things would likely just start over. Also, deep ocean life is pretty safe from us. There are a lot of places we just can't go yet and we're just talking about the earths crust.

Life has survived the planet being hit with the energy of 1000's of nukes multiple times, as well as ice ages, incredibly hot periods and geological upheaval. It will survive us.

    Whoa, that's pretty neat man.

Damn, Social, you yomi'd that shit! XD

I really liked your post too Fred. Adam, if everybody had that attitude this world would be a better place.

I don't agree that it's a dream but I get a feeling that unknown beings are involved. Maybe they are what we will evolve into billions of years from now. Maybe they have mastered time travel and from time to time decide to visit us... here, in our present... there's more but I'll sound crazy... ier.

Ultimately, I gotta agree with Adam, we as individuals have to determine our own purpose and/or meaning.
