sonic councl a fighter by peeps at famatsu or gamest was cool
what was the 3d fighter that a jap mag helped with, it looked well snk!
do don patchi was coool 4 a shooter
but battle monsters was so joke, it even had vf style combos an juggles. even though it was a 2d digitaised fighter, the jap version had more speach, hence more joke
street fighter real battle on film was,2me an up grade of super turbo(shame super turbo was a conversion of the psx version, hence it was slow) with the 1st time there was level 2's do a move with 2buttons, and captain sawada, never seen after:( his super was hilarious!
but what i want is final fight revenge, looks like a arcade psc/z1 game converted to saturn, a big 3d giant andore, haha, but i cant find it at all!
    i hav 2 chipped saturns

Final fight revenge is STV meaning arcade saturn.

    Taroumaru:
It's a pretty good game. 2.5D side-scroller, and as Fishie said, kind of Shinboi-ish (with lightning instead of throwing stars). Apparantly the director (or producer was it?) was from Treasure. I've got a video of the opening, but no gameplay footage.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I'll have to say it's nothing like Shinobi or Mystic Defender as it's often compared to. The closest thing gameplay wise is Game Arts' Alisia Dragoon since the protagonists in both games have the lightning attack mechanism. Where Taroumaru differs is that there's an onscreen cursor which targets the attack area and there are 2 types of attacks: the blue lightning which just destroys enemies and the brown one that allows you to takeover human enemies (this is where the psychic part comes in). Taking control of an enemy basically gives you a familiar which will automatically attack enemies and they can die as they have lifebars but you can also destroy them which will act as a screen clearing bomb. The other important gameplay aspect is the psychic shield. It will protect you from any attacks and can be used anywhere. Both characters actually differ slightly. As an example, Taroumaru crouches lower than the monk (I forget his name) so enemies strategies are unique between them.

It's amazing how misunderstood this game is. I assume it's mainly due to Gamefan's hype of it as something it's not so people went in with the wrong expectations. A fast run & slash it's not.

I know it's not an import, but geez, I loved Last Bronx! That animé opening movie, and the animé endings...the whole underground Tokyo gang-scene in it's Akira-like setting (now that I mention it, don't you reckon that the dude with the 3-section staff on his motorbike and his red leather jacket was a bit of a copy of Kaneda out of Akira?). I also loved Sega Rally! Oh, the masterful quality it had! Virtua Fighter 2's graphics! Oh my God! Compared to Tekken's awful step graphics and having to hide behind cheap fireworks, VF2 was the good clean master of fighting games. In fact, if my memory serves me correctly, it's controls were even MORE precise and more smooth than VF4!

PANZER DRAGOON SAGA!!!! Good Lord!! What a beauty!! 4-disc extravaganza!! Beautiful RPG with such an original slant...in fact, shove the discs into a CD player and check out the songs! Stick VF2 into your CD player for that matter (screw the warning, I've been playing them for years!)...the soundtrack of VF2 is 10 times that of VF3 and 4!

Ah, yes...Sega, Sega, Sega! i've still got my good 'ol Dreamcast! God bless Power Stone and Power Stone 2!! The fun I had with that game!! Sony may have the money, but Sega has the heart!!

I wanna hear what everyone else's memories are of the good ol' days, and my thanks goes out to Zero-Chan for bringing this up!!

If you want to talk about Saturn games generally, then some of the all-time greats for me would be:

    Virtua Fighter 2
    Sega Rally 2
    Virtua Cop 2
Astal (because it was the first game I ever played on my new Saturn! in fact it was a launch title in Japan)
    Panzer Dragoon Saga
Panzer Dragoon Zwei (ie. Panzer II)
    Nights
    Radiant Silvergun
    Battle Garegga

There's many more, but can't recall them all at the moment.

Yeah, come to think of it, Alisia Dragoon is a much better comparison -- good call.

Astal is another good one that I forgot about... nice 2D platformer.

My memories of the good ol days are :-

The release of Streets of Rage 2 for the mega drive, i spent all week end playing it and the following week i missed 2 days of school.

When Sonic 2 was out education meant nothing to me.

The following games i spent endless hours playing :

    Gunstar Heroes
    Soliel
    Story of Thor
    Imortal
    Syndicate
    Sonic 1,3, Spinball and Knuckles
    Shinobi 2 and 3

i have about 5 radiant silverguns being tossed about, lol the paradise of a modyfied console^^

getting back to real gaming, i think one of my fav japanese games is Doronboo!, luv the anime style top down shooter with anime FMVs and lovely arcade style graphics^^... i have a whole list really, but it would probably take too long to type..

good taste to whoever mentioned cotton2, and astra superstars, i also love guardian heroes, it was one of treasure's "different" game genres, hence their trademark character recycleage.. /versus/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

    I love my:

1)Fighters Megamix ( japanese version was better).
    2) Fighting vipers ( japanese version was better).
    3) X-men vs. street fighter
    4) Dalkstakers 3
    5) Marvel super Heroes vs. Street fighter
    6) Dead Or Alive (it was mostly a rip off of Vf2, but the Hold system(reversals), The Instant recovery(techrolls) and The danger zones, made it feel like a pseudo sequel to vf2).
    7) King of Fighters 95. It supported the 1meg cart.

Like the poster before me, I give much respect to Am3 for creating Last bronx. If a sequal was made, It would give Soul calibur a run for its money.

Urm actually the only cart that KoF 95 uses is the KoF 95 ROM cart wich holds the backgrounds and is used for minimising load times, its not a ram cart and can only be used with KoF95, game doesnt play witouth it either.

You may be correct, but I do remember asking a worker from an import shop, does The cart work with any other games, and he told me it works with Real bout(and some other snk games).

Then said worker is obviously stupid.

Not really imports, but some of my favourite Saturn games which I still play today:

    Guardian Heroes
(An amazingly well designed game. Tons of character. If only Valgar was a secret character in story mode...)

    Panzer Dragoon Saga/series
(My favourite series and one of my most prized possessions as the PAL version is like golddust as far as I know. Partly responsible for screwing up my GCSE's. Lack of cash is the only thing that has stopped me from buying an Xbox and Orta. What happend to Edge and Azel?!)

    Last Bronx
(A Great fighter, played it to death in the arcade. Nagi and her sai were my choice, I wish some of her techniques (K+G string etc) were used by Sarah. Also had an engrossing storyline and lots of character that VF could take notes from.)

    Virtual ON: Operation Moongate
(I bought the sticks too. Viper II all the way. Love the theme tunes.)

    Grandia
(Couldn't understand a word of it, but somehow that didn't matter. I had to use the then Official Sega Saturn mag's guide to complete it. Years later I bought the PSX version for my PS2.)

hmm.. a bit late, so all my favorite saturn games have been mentioned.

Nobody mentioned goiken muyou/anrachy in the nippon

It was the game made with input by the VF2 tetsujins.
It seemed to have a nice potential, but i never got to try it against a human opponent.

Just finished Panzer Dragoon Azel again, such a great game!!!
