SF4 Impressions (after actually playing)

I also have a lot of respect to those who can play SF well. It's a difficult game to be good at (like most fighters) and does demand practice, patience, execution, ect. But what I've come to accept about it is the way the game is played at tournament level. I don't care much for 2d games in general, but thats mostly because of the fireball traps and the "keep away" style of play. I'm not trying to shit on the game, I'm trying to say its not my cup of tea. If someone hated nitaku situations, I wouldn't expect them to enjoy high-level VF, because its part of the game.

What I like in fighting games is moment-to-moment options. VF has a lot (maybe too many LOL), while SF has very few options that won't get you killed against a decent player. But I understand WHY SF has so many safe moves. I understand why there are fireballs and uppercuts. I just don't care for it too much. But like I said, I haven't given up. Its unlikely that I'll ever play SF at tournament level though.

A metaphor: Say you're big into playing sports. You play basketball and tennis. Then a new sport comes along that all your friends start playing: ice hockey. But you don't like being cold, and you don't like ice-skating, so should you like playing ice hockey just because everyone else likes it? Probably not. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

agree. The defense in SF is really critical to surviving high level play just because you get punished really badly for mistakes in that you pretty much die. You can afford a lot more mistakes in VF but there are also more opportunities to make those mistakes. I like that about VF actually.

I know SDS is good at SF we got down in HDremix and he puts a hurting down. But seriously put your video where you mouth is when it comes to C.viper's hard combos.

I have not heard anyone even on SRK vets who main her say her combo inputs are easy by any means. That's why she was considered low tier for so long, nobody could straight up use her.

Everyone can have their opinons about the game. I just want to go on record that when SF3rd strike came out everyone hated on it and now it is talked about like it was the best 2D game nobody played (before GG came around).

Give SF4 a few versions and maybe another 5 years and people will get on it's nuts like they are on SF3. The fighting game community is really strange somtimes.

Just fyi for people who are saying SF makes so many versions of the "same" game. Uhm how many versions of VF5 are there, and VF4? Would we call that a repackaged version of the same game?

Again opinions are fine but get the facts right.

Just wanted to let everyone know I'm absolutely loving this game! I read a lot of criticism on SRK about how the game feels sluggish and sometimes wonder if they're playing the same game. The smoothness is actually what I like about it the most. The combos are stylish and hard enough. Whoever says they aren't is crazy. I can do any characters combos in VF any day of the week, the difficulty of play isn't what makes me love VF though. Its really only link timing that stops me from doing it in SF, so really its just a matter of time until you get them down. None of this really matters though because its just straight up fun.

Some things I dislike about the game:
-Ultras have crazy invincibility frames. If you essentially beat the hell out of someone, you end up having to turtle just incase they throw a random ass ultra out. Shouldn't be a huge problem in high end play but for now its annoying.

-The Soundtrack. They did something cool by making it change tempo based on the situation, but in return it's reaaally simple. I don't HATE the soundtrack, but its got nothing on VF.

-All the unlocking. This is a fighting game not an MMO.

Anywho I'm loving it for sure. Abel is fun as hell btw.

Gernburgs, don't you like every single game that comes out?

I'm a lil bit interested in what games you hate.

The overall presentation of the game is better than both PS3 and Xbox360 VF5 version. As a casual fan, I am enjoying the game.

The bonus anime that came with the collector's edition, made the anime cut scenes/endings understandable. The anime, itself, is not great. The low quality (on purpose?) did made me laugh though /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Anyone know if those anime cut scenes/endings were in the arcade version?

Yeah it's alot of fun, and this is coming from someone that's played in SF tournaments before and doesn't enjoy 2D fighters anymore. The game is just fun to me. Even if I'm getting my ass beat by everyone, same deal in VF too anyway.

I also said the samething about sc4 being fun too though, I liked that shit alot too, but I don't like it that much now.

VF will probably take the forefront again, but it's kind of hard when there isn't many people playing and you got R on some look but don't touch type shit.

No they weren't. The endings were kind of in there as a slide of images. No opening anime or story of any kind though. The stuff about the ending is from what I herd on SRK because I was never on an arcade machine long enough to get to the end. (damn people kicking my ass everytime.

I like it. This is the first SF game I've actually tried to get into. I just kinda threw fireballs plus I was a little kid in all the other ones and I never even played 3s but once, so this is all relatively new to me and I'm enjoying it. However, I can completely understand how some people say it's the same thing from 10-20 years ago because honestly...I was like 8 when I got sf2 on my genesis and everyone still has all the same damn moves so yeah, I can understand, but trying to successfully do links into ultras is just fun. However, dealing with someone who knows how to use Cammy and fucking turtles the whole damn match and you're ryu is NOT fun. and is it just me or can you not punish her damn ultra whether you jump over that shit or block it? I couldn't for the life of me do it, and I tried so hard, but let me miss mine, and it's my ass in a heartbeat...sorry for the vent.
With all this being said, anyone who wants to beat up on a sorry SF player or even teach me how to play, feel welcome. I would love it and appreciate. However, this game won't be taking over my VF spotlight. I can already tell that. It's fun for now, but dealing with people who turtle and it's legit is just not my thing. Haha, neither is *Hadoken! Hadoken! *Shit he's not jumping* Hadoken! *Gotcha bitch! SHORYUKEN!! Did I mention that I suck at this game already? Just making sure.

Top players on IRC all week have been saying how some of these trials are no joke. Especially some of Viper's. I'm sorry, but to say it's nothing is asinine lol. Once you commit them to muscle memory sure, you're able to do them. But first time through, they can be insanely hard at times.

Top n00b players? I don't have much experience with SF and these trials seem damn easy so far.

I've beaten all of Viper's trials normal and hard. That shit is some tough stuff, but I expect nothing less I always end up using characters like this. I played A-Guy in a3, I do alot of techniques(though alot of them are probably unnecessary though they look stylish) with Sarah in VF etc.

EDIT: btw, when you get past one of them, the previous one becomes consistent all of a sudden. Atleast for me. For example I can do hard trial #4's combo in matches consistently now. 5 remains to be seen, that one is tough to do, you need the stick stable as hell. I couldn't do it when I was playing the game with the stick on my lap before. I got this table and this bubble stuff that keeps things from moving on a surface, and I was able to complete the trials.

This is definitely true. Once I did Abel's hard trial #4, hard trial #3 became easy.

I love the game; the AI is too smart, how the heck do you beat Seth with Vega? He just makes ALL the right choices.

good stuff man. I get one of C.viper and one of Sakura's Hard Trial combos a day pretty much. I get stuck on one then decide to practice that combo in ranked matches or the in the other challenge modes, sleep on it, then I can do it.

The tip about putting the stick on a solid surface might help me out with C.viper's hard 3 combo. I finally found out how to execute it I just can't tap QCBHP -->QCFPPP -->QCFPPP fast enough

Trying to beat Seth with Chun is just as tiresome especially since all my charging fail as he teleports in front of me and behind me so fast one after another.
