So, how many of the hundreds of thousands who bought VF4 were/are competitive? Right.

What you said goes for any fighting game, including VF. The majority of the buying audience isn't competitive and won't fully understand the game.

And to say all VF players inherently have a "deeper" understanding of fighting games in general (or simply just their own game) compared to other fighting gamers is just being retarded, it's dick sayings like this that turns away people, just like if someone writes stupid shit on Tekken Zaibatsu/SRK/whatever about VF, people here get riled up.

In my experience, SF4 has brought SF back to the front but didn't take the rest of the FG genre with it. But I'd gladly be proven wrong.

Not anymore! [IMG] You can no longer add a hit after KO. The move you KO with is the last thing you can do in a round.

i guess this depends on what your definition of bringing back is.

sf4 is not helping the sales of other fighting games, period. capcom has essentially become the only competitor in the sales game, and look no further than the abysmal sales of blazblue and tekken 6 as proof of this (the former sold less than vf5 between both platforms, the latter is the worst selling iteration of tekken to date).

as far as how it's effecting the scene, it's something of an ambiguity. on one hand, i dare you to find a tournament where anything out attends sf4. on the other hand, sf4 is bringing in some people who are interested in other fighting games; so at least from where i am, it's exposure of the fighting game genre to the mainstream can be best described as minimal but existent.

one thing worth noting is that local tournaments for a lot of games here in norcal are at their biggest in years, with the only real exception i can think of being tekken. it's kind of funny to hear tekken players complain about how people don't want to learn such a hard game (they unironically use this argument all the time), to which i respond: "ever heard of a game called virtua fighter?".

I just wish Battle Fantasia got this much love... It's a 3S clone with some GG mixed in, but it was still interesting to say the least...

I know. I can't find nearly enough info for the game, much less Deathbringer.

Have you looked at Nohoho's site for BattleFantasia info? I always notice he has links about it on the left side of hit site when I'm digging for ST info on his blog.

Better games are getting replaced by worse games at major tournaments. HDR replaced ST everywhere but Japan. BB:CT has replaced GGAC entirely at many tournaments. TvC has replaced CvS2 and nearly replaced MvC2 at EVO if it wasn't for Dust Loop giving up the BB:CT spot.

I have nothing against TvC by itself. But if TvC is taking away from CvS2 or MvC2 then I can't say that I'm amused. The problem with our FG scene is that major tournaments just drop games like they are nothing. Then again, even SBO is wildly inconsistent sometimes with what games they feature.

Though this year SBO is trying to have as many games as they can. They are doing the 'major' games (SFIV, VF5R, T6BR, etc.). Then having a 'minor' games scene for stuff like 3S, ST, and GGAC. Then they are having a 'miscellaneous' set of games for KOFXIII and MB that fans and spectators didn't want excluded. The point is that SBO is trying to feature as many games as possible this year to become a gathering point for all FG communities. They are almost trying to make a FG renaissance in Japan and have SBO as a launching point.

EVO, and other U.S. events, are poor in that they shutout FGs often for no reason other than being poorly organized. EVO organizers refuse to run more than six games. But running officially EVO branded side events for things like CvS2, 3S, and other dropped games would have been a good thing to do especially with all of the attention that SSFIV is going to bring.

Part of me does (Heart or Raoh look the most interesting, though me and 2D fighters have issues), but I don't have a PS2 that can play that region (hence I have a copy of VF2 that hasn't been played).

I hope they make another one, with more characters (Shuu, Gento Koken guys, Kiaoh/Hyuu/Han, Clover, more Nanto in general), less glitches, and the same Hokuto no Ken awesomeness.

Or I'll just wait for KoF 13 and only play single character mode with King (I hate teams).

No, I'm curious to how HDR is a bad game and/or worse than ST.

    - no O.characters
    - scrubbed down inputs and characters
    - homogenization of characters
    - inconsistent balance changes
    - new glitches and bugs introduced
    - new sprites don't overlay hitboxes correctly
    - ST is the standard in Japan and SBO
    - some characters entire playing styles are changed

HDR is an ok game but it's not nearly as good as ST. AE was featured one year at EVO and SBO but both tournaments dropped it and reverted back to the better game. And I highly doubt that HDR will be around EVO next year.

Just hit me then.. I rocks with Watson too. My Daughter made him my main.

You are afraid of change and its oh so sad.

ONLY IN REMIX MODE. Don't listen to this Hating ass Dickhead. Its still streetfighter in the essence and i would love to see this at battle opera.
There is also a option to let you change to original sprites midgame by a simple tweak of the options. EmpNova on the Real.... Shut your Hating Ass Up. This game is fun and Beautiful. If you wanna try it i urge whomever to.

    Kay.

I still don't get it though. SF and all 2Ds just feel random as hell. 4 frame attacks, even smaller throw windows, and the worst of all: an already advanced player base (it is like trying to get into Unreal Tournament for the first time) but are the least helpful in teaching people their game (i.e. SRK, IPW, etc).

    (and yes, I know I'm a scrub)

ST is easy to get into, there aren't that many specific rules that you need to know right off the bat, and the movelists are small compared to something like VF. You also have Sirlin's ST tutorials on YouTube and dozens of combo and match videos. And the SRK Wiki is loaded with good info and links (I would know as I wrote lots of the ST Wiki on SRK).

Sure the SRK forum might be insanity for SFIV information. But for games like CvS2, ST, and even 3S there are tons of treasure troves within SRK. You just have to know where to look.

I was around for UT1999 and I played at WCG event and LAN parties. The scene was infinitely less beginner friendly than the FG community. At SRK/VFDC you have combo lists and frame data all over. For UT back in the day it was kill or be killed with no one helping anyone lol. I can't remember a single decent community oriented site for UT1999 that was focused on competitive playing and not something like map making or modding.

    - Inputs have become more forgiving and lax since the days of ST, I am sure you are aware of.
    - Enlighten me.
    - Based off of tier list? When has capcom ever gotten this right?
    - Same as every capcom game. " "
    - If there are examples please show me, are they game breaking?
    - So.
    - That's a bad thing?

Remember you can switch modes. I really don't understand where your grievances with HDR are coming from. I can make the same points with other capcom fighting games. Give the game another shot.
