I'll take that as a compliment from Shag since I'm Catherine's Akira (she plays Pai). /versus/images/graemlins/grin.gif

She'll definitely want to make the trip.

Plague Huge thank you goes to Plague for the best house VF setups I've ever seen every night. Everything was convinient and smooth. Also thx for filming the tourney and announcing the players. I can't wait to see the crowd vids that you took. I know I made a complete fool of myself, but I don't even care! =D
I enjoyed playing a Akira vs Akira set we played. I liked your use of Knee on oki situation. Mixing up with throw when your opponent freezes up, I think it will become an even more powerful setup.

Catherine

Thank you also for hosting the nightly gathering. You were such a gracious host, and I really appreciated it. The match that ended Kazu's long streak at AI was amazing to watch, and I think your aggressive style really suits well with Pai. Maybe more usage of 1K+G could further increase her strength.

GoatCheeseBlues
Brian. What can I say. SH_ and I owe you big time, brother. You took care of us from the beginning to the end. You are one of the nicest people I've ever met in my life. Your VF has gotten a ton better since last time I played. You are the most improved player in my book. You have a very nice understanding of the system and Sarah. You will definately be even more of a force to reckon with if you study character specific stuff more, and I know you will.

SillyWilly
I was great seeing you again, my Korean bro. We had so much laughs during the weekend. Thx for driving, too. It was really nice to see you getting more inspired over the weekend. With your great group in Socal, I am sure next time I see you, you wlll be compeletely different player. Make sure you check out Kofu's matches in the Evo disc.

KTallGuy
Great seeing you again, Kenan. I was nice hanging out with you after our short meeting at Evo2k4. You are a very cool guy, and the chit chat we had was nice and helpful.Good luck with job searching, and keep up the nice Van.

LPC73
Shoot. We haven't got to play this time, but it was nice seeing you again. I enjoyed watching your play against Sean's Akira. You seem to have a very good feel for Wolf.

FatalRose
Nice to meet you for the first time. I remember that I once followed a link floating around on VFDC, and saw that you had about 2,500 posts on one website. If you can gear your dedication a bit towards VF in the future, I am pretty sure, Socal will have a strong Jacky player. Keep up the good work.

Sean

Nice to meet you for the first time. I enjoyed hanging out and talking with you. You are quite but a witty guy. I noticed that you have a great feel for the fuzzy guard in VF. Don't listen to anybody who tries to get your guard down. You should keep up your strong fuzzy guard. In my opinion, your fuzzy gurading is one of the best in Socal, and the people in Socal can greatly benefit from playing against you. Socal people, if you want to learn how to beat fuzzy in VF4, play Sean more.

Once you get more setups with Akira, I think you will become a very strong player. Watching Japanese Akira matches I think will help you a lot.

Joey
It was great seeing you again, my friend. It was shame that you couldn't play till late, but I enjoyed our intense matches. I think you might of been a bit out of practice from all the hard school work of yours, but you seem definately more inspired to take your Lau to next level by the end of the weekend. More usage of 8K against EDTEG and a bit less usage of 1K,K could strengthen your Lau IMHO.

DRE

Great seeing you again, DRE. It's always amazing to see how my passion and yours almost identically match. Your Akira's a fearless animal; just watching it made me intimidated. I enjoyed playing against various characters you can play. With more exp against players like Joey, Goat, and others, you will become much stronger for sure.

Andy and Spotlite

I was looking forward to meeting up with you guys again, but maybe next time. Good luck with everything, and I envy you for the great scene you guys have. Play more if you can. =)

Jack
What a suprise. It was great meeting you, Jack. Your Akira is just full of potential. I did shrm ram, and you blocked and went for a P throw. You saw me breaking that throw after a P a few times and switched to a P, delayed single palm, elbow.

That was some high level understanding, and it really amazed me among other things you did. You have a very good understanding of the game, and your execution with Akira is pretty good. Just work on combos on Shrm, and play DRE or Joey who have fast reflexes to increse your reaction speed. I can see you leveling up very fast.

Alex
Awesome hanging out with you, Alex. You are one cool guy, and we shared a lot of laughs together. Great job organizing the tourney. It was totally great. Your Leifei improved a ton from last time I played. I was suprised to see all those high level setups that you were doing with Leifei. Some stuff I have never seen from SH_ over all those days he played Lei as his main. I could see you definately put a lot of effort in playing him, and I have much respect for it. Only thing I can think of that could help your game is you wanna take advantage of a small adv more. Use 66P when your LP hits on normal hit until your opponent freeze up or does a defensive techniques. It will open up for all those advanced setups you can do with him. Remember, people won't fall for advanced setups unless you discourage them from using basic defenses.

NYC hope to see you guys in August !!!

Kazu
Great seeing you again, Kazukun. We'd met a few times before, but this time I was really glad that we got to have good conversations and share some nice laughs together. You are really cool guy with a nice sense of humor. Thanks for the inspirational words you gave me when I left for airport. You've always inspired me to get better, and your finals against Yosuke were some amazing display of high level plays. Hope to see you soon in NYC!

AdamYUKI
Great seeing you again, brother!. You created so many unforgettable moments during the trip. Your matches against Jerky was plain fun to watch. (This is down... this is forward.... =) ) Your determination and mental toughness as always are great to watch and draining to deal with when I play against you. Thank you for the props and inspirations. You've always been there for me to try catching up with. I already look forward to our next meeting with you.

Shag
Great to finally meet you, Shag. You are a cool guy to hang out with, and I learned a lot from the SF matches we had. =) Good match we had in FT after Yosuke had a 51 winning streak. I thought I might win more than 2 games with all that momentum from finally ending Yosuke's streak, but you ended it right at 2. lol Keep up the nice Goh and SF plays.

It's getting really long, but hey what can I do. =P It was that memorable. I will write part II tomorrow.

Hey guys, I have to say that me (Chuji) and Hadinata had an excellent time. It was a tough sell to get him to brave the hour drive to Pomona from South Orange County, but we both totally knew that it was worth it. I just loved the fact that you all took in 2 complete strangers to join in the festivities :-D. We will definitely attempt to meet up with you amazing Socal players whenever we am able to make a trek down to AI so we can improve our game. Thanks again!

Shag's shout outs!

Bare with me, this is a LONG POST.

Old Friends – Cali edition:

Plague – Talis, I want to thank you very much again for hosting me at your lovely home and having the all night casuals at your crib. You are one of the nicest guys around to look after everybody and make sure they were enjoying themselves. Plus, you’re just naturally cool to hang out with. Thanks for the Guitar Freaks games and letting me experience Frisco’s one more time. We had some intense matches, I’ve never been hit with Akira’s knee so many times.( I think one time you did 4 in a row while I was on the ground) From now on I dub your Akira “Nii-Ryo†which I hope translates into “Way of the knee.†in Japanese. Oh hell, you’re the Akira Knee Master.

Catherine – The same thanks I give to Talis, I give to you as well. Thank you so much for letting me into your home for my stay. Great chatting with you with just about anything. We didn’t get as many games in this weekend but I think we made up for it in our tourney match. You had my chest thumping hard with some intense play. I don’t think I’ll be so lucky next time.

GoatCheeseBlues – Really nice seeing you again. We had some fun matches early on. Glad to see your friends at the tourney. By the way, I got horchata! /versus/images/graemlins/cool.gif

PhoenixDth – Alex, you continue to astound me with your Lei. Our scrubby Jeffry-Lion matches were a riot. Some Tenka matches next time?

LPC73 – Brian, I may have won our deathmatch but you beat me when it counted during the tourney. I had a gameplan going into our match and told myself don’t low punch against you, but DER!! I didn’t follow through and you lived up to your name and cut me up. If I had to name a rival, it would be you. I look forward to our next bout.

Silly Willy – Had lots of fun chilling with you man. We gotta hang outside of the arcade one day. Glad we finally got to face each other, I never played Shun so well before in casuals and prolly never again.

Dre – Good seeing you again man. I don’t know how I beat you in tourney cause you destroyed me in casuals. I’m sure your going to lump me up hard next time.

Sean – The Silent Killer, that’s what I’m calling you from now on. Good games bro.

Exile? and Andy – Didn’t face you guys but I was glad to see you guys around. Hopefully we face off next time.

Old Friends from abroad:

Adamyuki – So glad I had a fellow New Yorker to BRING THE RAPE PARTY! I told you you’d love Friscos Adam. Thanks for letting everybody know about the DARKNESS! /versus/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Kazu - I swear one day I’m going to get you good. Thanks for the sitdown matches this weekend. What does not kill me makes me stronger. I was so excited when you sent Yosuke to losers. You’ll get him next time and putting your arms up high. /versus/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Jerky – Thanks for the laughs Andrew the whole weekend. Why didn’t we face each other? I’m going to quote CrewNYC, its Boston Fear! heh heh. /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Ice-9 – Its’ been awhile Jeff, since VF4 first came out. Had a great time playing against you. We started out even but you adapted and saw my flaws and trounced me. You literally made my head hurt. /versus/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Thanks for the experience as it will help me develop my game better.

Myke – The Mixmaster himself (why do I call you that?) We didn’t get much time together this time around. I hope you make it to NYC soon. I’m also glad you did so well in the tourney after peacing me out; you deserve it.

SH_ - Sean, I was so impressed with your play. Your Brad is a beast and you’ve only been playing him for a short time. Total inspiration to me, you are officially Ace_Brad. Had lots of fun playing HNK with you, made me actually forget FT.

Yosuke – I guess I owe you a big favor because this gathering probably wouldn’t have happened without you. We didn’t face each other at all last weekend but I know we’ll meet again soon and you slaughter me as usual. No more humble talk from you, you are a strong player and you proved it to everyone.

New friends from across the country:

Wallace – New Challenger Comes! Pleasure to meet you man. I hope to see and hear from you again, would really like to see some of the footage you capped. Don’t be so defensive in your game, get on the offensive mode sometimes and you will excel. I hope you can find more people to play in Utah.

Sanjuro – Hey Fred, good games and chatting with you. Maybe one year I’ll go down to your neck of the woods for Mardi Gras. I know we will have a blast.

Madrox – Yo, I’m kinda pissed at you. You started drinking without me! We never got our drinking matches but the casuals we had were mad fun. If I’m ever in Chicago, I’ll be sure to look you up.

Maddy – Interesting fact: Maddy does not require food or sleep. He can sustain by eating the souls of men. Was totally floored watching you play, your Akira is a force of nature. Fun matches of SF we had at AI. I was impressed by your Ryu, have to show you some more tricks next time. I’m happy to announce I’m 1-0 against you in VF. Heh heh.

New Cali friends:

KtallGuy – Kenan, so awesome to have met you. Our VF and 3S matches were fantastic. Can’t wait to face you again.

Fatal Rose – It was cool hanging out with you Ryan. You got the moves, now just learn how to apply them and you will be set for life.

Ken-I – I had no idea Sextaro the 3S legend plays VF. You got a killer Brad, was upset that you didn’t make the tourney. Till next time; Evo perhaps?

Betabow - Nice to meet you Joey, you hitting the Japanese button on Kazu made my day. I hope to fight you in the future.

Huey_Nine – I forgot to ask you where you got that beautiful custom stick Chuji. I totally need to get one. Good games to you in the tourney.

Tony and Vinh – Good games pre-tourney, I’m sure with a little more work you guys are going to be solid.

Paolo, Tiergo and Riona – I hope you all continue to play VF and see you again. Thanks Paolo for repping the New York T-shirt. Riona, a female ninja in training, will you be a future Hokage? (Naruto reference) /versus/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

-----------------------------------------------
Whew! I think I mentioned everyone. I hope I didn’t leave anybody out, if so please curse me out and refresh my memory of an unforgettable weekend.

In conclusion, SoCal VF rocks.

I knew I'd forget a few things..

People
Ken_I, from SoCal, thanks for the Brad vs Brad matches. Even though we played at like 5am or something, it was pretty fun.

Jerky, in true help-a-brother-out style, thankyou for loaning me your joystick during the tourney. You've convinced me to mod my HRAP with Sanwa buttons and maybe even replace the joystick switches. And I'm damned impressed that you've actually bothered to remove all the non-VF buttons from your HRAP! It requires zero effort to leave them in, but you wouldn't have it! Truly hardcore! The Karate Kid sing alongs were fun too /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sanjuro, thankyou for sharing your crying moments with us, both with movies and country music! /versus/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

SillyWilly, I will never forget the Korean pose!

FatalRose, thanks for not passing on the flu! hah

Yosuke and Kazu, thanks for leaving the best prize for me! /versus/images/graemlins/lol.gif

Shag and KT, thanks for the 3s matches! They were a pleasant distraction.

Places
Friscos, although it was like my 4th time there, I missed out on the show! I'll have to strategically choose my seat next time!

Chipotle, damn best and biggest burrito I've had, EVER. Like Adam said, it was like nursing a new born baby /versus/images/graemlins/lol.gif I think it was the only meal I had that day and was still digesting it for breakfast the next! Plague likening it to digesting a wolverine had as all LOLing like mofo's! Oh, and "Ask a mexican!" even though I forgot to read it /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

AI, still too dark and too loud and they need a 2nd FT machine.. BUT.. drinking boba tea outside and watching that "cutey" dance around made it all worth while! /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif

More to come as I remember...

I never know what to tell people in the days leading up to my vacations. I tell them where and I tell them Virtua Fighter and this weird kinda thing happens with their eyes like they're surprised and curious then this other thing goes on with their mouth like they wanna laugh but they manage to stifle the shock and guffaw and sorta...just..."sounds...like...fun". And I try to, y'know, tell them it's not cosplay star trek or red bull gaming maniacs but I lost them at Virtua so they keep eating their omelet and I spod out another ticket and count down the days to my flight.

And then there's watching the list grow. Telling richard every morning as I get to work and he leaves who's coming now "Mutherfucking Kazu's gonna be there? Shit! KAZU! You better whup his ass, as much Lau as I send at you!"

Picking the book out for the flight. Another good one. Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro (wrote The Remains of the Day...& don't let the movie fool you cause the book was fucking solid). I didn't even realize the significance of the author's name relative to the occasion of my flight...a young lady turned me onto some other books by this fellow and this is his latest. I won't tell you any more than that you should read it, it's basically ishiguro's take on your sort of dystopian fiction like 1984 or Brave New World & it will make you cry. Sure as Rocky (the first one) or a quick turn of the radio dial to your local country station. Real human tears, mate.

The escalator going down to baggage claim in Ontario. Willy and Brian front row center to greet me. Thank you Brian for being such a kick ass host. Top notch really. & your sarah is so goddamned fly. I saw flawless rounds from her vs. EVERYONE. WOW! & thankyou WIlly for the rides and the smokes (you should be proud of me though...this is day #5 in a row no smoking!!) and the friendship. Especially that last part. Put Aoi through her paces and let's get down to business!!

Discovering that (before I got my bags even) Maddy and SH_(shushushu!!) were on the way and expected very soon. And then hanging out at Brian's as they arrive in good fighting shape. Jimmy your akira is fucking inspiring. Look at Shawn's (it is spelled Shawn, right shushushu?) akira and mine by the event's end. Really though I'm just happy that you got to deathmatch with the cream of the crop & throw down with Yosuke and pick his brain. Thankyou for stopping the madness(51 wins! Nobody can stop me!) by the way & thanks for the matches & for making the trip. YESSSSSSSS! And Mr. Howard. Your enthusiasm is just so damned pure. I told you that you remind me of my little brother & I'm saying it again. I'm so proud of you for having represented in the tourney. I'm so high on VF from this trip and so much of it has to do with getting to room with you guys.

Durnit I wanted to (finally) get all of this down but duty calls once again...more tomorrow since I finally have a day off...

You've always opened your house to us and it's hard to let you know how much we appreciate that. It's a rarity to find people so damn nice. =)

Catherine
Haha, thanks for putting up with me =) Your Pai is strong! I hope we can play more next time...

GoatCheeseBlues
Your Sarah is so much fun .... to KILL! Haha but seriously, you're a great guy and I enjoyed our matches. That Korean dessert thing was really fricking good. We have to do that again sometime.

SillyWilly
Leaaamonnn~ Secret attack!!! FF12 rulez! Fricking FRISCOS!! Wow, it was a fun weekend huh? I'm glad we could hang out. You amaze me , managing a company and all that. Keep in touch and I wish you the best man.

Maddy
It's been a long time! I never really talked to you that much until this tournament, but I'm glad I got to know you a bit more. You're a great guy and your playstyle is awesome to watch and/or get beaten by. Makes me want to practice more ... =P

LPC73
The Prodigal Wolf! HOooooowwwll! I have to shoot you an e-mail about that stuff we talked about. Right now job hunting is getting hectic though, I have no idea what's gonna happen ... but it could be big! Good to see you!

FatalRose
It was really cool to meet you man! Your advice on stuff (martial arts, etc) was really inspiring. I will make time for some real action soon. It's awesome that you have so much passion for both real life MA and video game MA. That Yakuza game is awesome, but I didn't get to show you much, unfortunately. Go buy it when it comes out! Anyway keep in touch!

Andy
Man, I only got to play you a little bit. I wanted to learn some more Vanessa stuff from you. Next time we have to work on that together. =P I hope you're doing well.

ice-9
Man, since we're in the bay we should play more. As soon as stuff settles down, I'll PM you or something.

Joey
I really thought your Lau was cool and fun to watch!! I was scared when I fought you. You taught me to say 'go easy on me' in chinese, but I already forgot. You have to teach me again. And you didn't go easy on me either!! LIAR!! haha. Keep in touch!!

DRE
So. Many. MATCHES! Fricking crazy. RESPECT! And such solid game. Really good to finally meet you after reading your posts for so long. Take care!

Madrox
Wow, you got DRUNK! =) It was funny shit. I hope you've fully recovered. Good matches.

Jerky
Yo, great talking to you and getting to know you more. The matches we had were fun as hell, and you're just an all around great guy. I'm going to use the word 'great' a few more times. Great great great. Your humor is fun too. If that's how they throw down in Boston, I'll have to come visit more.

Alex
Your futon was really comfy. I could live at your house if I get a job in LA, right ? ? Oh, and I hate your Lei Fei. Thanks so much for the hospitality, and for mailing me my keys. I can get in my house now! YES! Oh and I'll buy you an umbrella, stop bitching about it.

Kazu
Kazu! Your Lau gave me horrible flashbacks of Nishi. I cried myself to sleep every night in Japan because of people like you. Have you no shame ? I guess it's because you're from Kansai... huh =p haha but seriously it was fun talking to you, I hope to play you again when I actually can have a game to bring.

AdamYUKI
I haven't seen you since JAPAN! Fun conversations. Played you a few times. Understood the 'machi'ness. But understanding is one thing... beating you ... well that's for japanese people to do. =P

Wow, awesome Goh. It takes a lot of cajones to play Goh. I don't know for 100% sure about the cajones themselves, but you've got a big... ahem... great personality and I had fun playing you. 3S was also great.

Haha the srubby matches!! You're a funny guy. And we both know how hard it is to turn off our libidos... LA's got some cute girls, that's for sure. Keep in touch man and keep the stories coming! =)

I don't know when you'll read this, but if/when you do, I hope that you're all rested and you had a good time back in Japan with your family. I'm glad to have met you, and I'm glad that I could help out a little bit. You've got a lot of courage coming to the US to study for so long, away from everything you're familiar with (including VF!!). I hope to see you again sometime. Thanks! PS: Your Jacky .... arienai!

Wow, I had no idea you we're that good! Well, I don't really know anything ... =P Your brad is awesome, and you're a great guy. Keep studying Japanese! Don't give up! If you ever feel like giving up... um... go find 'something' on the internet that will spur you on. It worked for me! Good to meet you!!

The thunder from down under! The poster on the results thread is a stunning likeness of you, don't you think? =) Really fun hanging out with you. Keep punishing my mistakes in VF, and I'll eventually learn. I hope to see you again someday. Your work on these forums is nothing short of godly.

Hahah, I felt so stupid because of my knee jerk reaction at the Chinese restaraunt. I was telling you, 'This is the proper way to eat Chinese food... blah blah.' Just tell me to STFU next time, eat it however you like to. =) And it's awesome to have a new member of the VFDC community. Start posting!!

Re: International gathering with Yosuke!! March 24th

I now know why the guest of honor always stays at Phoenixdth's house. It's the little Tony Montana mansion that could. Seriously alex, take a picture of your columns and show these people. See the little room over the garage? That's the room where the phoenix rises. The way the house is situated on this hill reminds me a lot, in fact, of stomp's house in florida. One day...
Met Jack who as maddy says has a mean akira. Tried on the wrestling mask & put the hoodie over it. I should wear masks more often. We all bitched about the phoenix custom stick which actually wasn't that bad except later I got the beating of my life using it. Yosuke's jeffry. Not even like a submain here. 100% goof off character. His combo? MC knee>knee. He did it like 8 times on me. It was his flow chart. Pretty demoralizing. I never recovered really. Damn stick! /versus/images/graemlins/lol.gif

I shoulda played more with Myke. We only got a couple matches in. One was close. I was right there. Then kage did some kage shit or fred did some fred shit and it was time for me to get up. I watched a bunch of his matches though. I've told Myke this before and it still stands. Myke's play is logical. You can see him thinking. Probing. You can feel it when you play against him. This is the one time on the internet that "probing...you can feel" doesn't mean that. Jesus. Grow up. At one point in one of the final 8 matches (I think vs SH_ or maybe it was Jerky? I don't know) Myke & his opponent were parallel to the ring edge about a meter from the apron and Myke TFT>something>dodge attack!! & put his opponent's back to the ring edge. The fight went on and no ring out happened & in final measure you've gotta say it was risky but it gave his opponent something else to worry about in the heat of battle. The pressure from that move totally won the round for Myke. Before the tourney and at least one other time in the past (boston?) I asked "so, you gonna win this thing mike?". "Anything can happen" was his answer. Good show Mike.

Tough to find time to sit down and compose. Been playing alot too. I've taken a whole lot home from this event. Learned sooooo much. We need to all get together again and throw down soon because it felt like, at the end of the whole thing, everyone had their list of things to improve upon. Get stronger. Yosuke made everyone reevaluate their game.

more soon-ish...
