Um..since you mention VF in St. Louis, do you have a personal arcade machine of evolution at home or just that there is a machine not in St. Louis but close by?

A side question also, I have not been to the arcades for a while but are there Soul Calibur 2 or Virtua Fighter 4 in the St. Louis region?

The Evo that we play is owned by an individual. There is no arcade around here that has it. Although, UMSL may get it sometime next year. The only VF4 B in STL is at the Ameristar and it's broken. From what I hear, all of the SC2 machines in STL (UMSL, STL Center, NW Plaza Tilt, Crestwood Tilt) are broken too.

If you want to get together with us for an Evo session, we'd welcome it. If you have any game play questions, feel free to ask here.

Tim: Good games last night. It's going to take me a bit to get back into the VF4 mindset and start breaking throws more often as well as capitalizing on your mistakes. I'm sure you'll be pounding it into my head to low throw you every time you whiff a low move. /versus/images/icons/smile.gifAnyway, I probably won't be available tonight but I will be able to play tomorrow night. Let me know what's going on.
In regards to SC2, I think the machine at UMSL is in the best shape. The one at Crestwood is totally broken and Northwest Plaza's buttons are too far apart. I only played at STL Center one time and the sticks were bad. Don't know if they've fixed them since then or not...
EDIT: Tim, I just read that the escape for Goh's catch throws is to just press the stick in the opposite direction of the way I'm moving. You don't have to press [G] unless I am doing the [P]+[G] push without moving.

Thanks on the info on the arcades, Shou-sama and Killbomb.

I definitely would like to get together and play VF, if it is not too much of a bother, Shou-sama. I am pretty much free for the next three days. Just tell me the time and place to meet and I could most likely make it.

Some things that I was curious about,

    1) How does Pai play in Evo? I heard how there are many changes in her throws-more low throws and stagger/stumble throws.

    2) The nickname Killbomb sounds very familiar. Do you guys hang out in the arcades a lot? I remember playing Tekken 4 at Crestwood and NW Plaza when it just came out and getting beaten up alot by several people.

Akai: Well, VF4 Evolution is owned by Kaminari Oyaji (Tim) so you should PM him with your number and let him know you're interested. He's always looking for new VF players so I'm sure you'll be welcome. We'll probably be playing tomorrow or Saturday night, not sure which one yet. I did play a lot of Tekken 4 at Northwest and a bit at Crestwood when it first came out. I mainly used Steve, Kazuya and Bryan with a litte Marduk thrown in. As for Pai, go here to see her movelist... http://virtuafighter.com/commands/index.php?chara=pai&ver=evo New moves are in red and modified moves are in blue.

Just let me know if this is a life time ban or just temporary.

Thanks for the intro to Evo, I really enjoy the night and meeting all you guys. Quite ... a ... unique ... bunch /versus/images/icons/wink.gif, I must say.

Tim - thanks for the hospitality, lol, maybe next time I will actually get to fight against you. Also, nice game room setup. I will have to get used to playing VF with a joystick.

Eric - thanks for showing how much I will need to learn to play better. Got beaten bad, but I will practice! I know that you guys got me addicted to evo when I went to sleep and was thinking on how to fight against Akira. Sad..... oh yeah, also that powerful Pai combo that you show me...was it:
    master counter with her double palm --> [P] --> double palm --> [6],[6],[P],[K] ?

    Again, nice meeting you guys.

Yeah, good games last night everyone...
Tim: You have the same problem that I do a lot of times...frustration takes over and you lose focus. I don't think Brad is overpowered it's just that we aren't used to seeing his shit yet. You just have to be patient and wait for your moment to strike or throw. The sidestep move helps too as he seems to be fairly linear. Anyway, it'll just take some practice to learn when to do Kage's [3][P] to destroy Brad's pokes. /versus/images/icons/smile.gif Let me know when the next gathering is.
Johnny: Good meeting you...Your Pai seems to have some good potential. You just need more practice against humans. /versus/images/icons/smile.gif Also, [9][K],[K] is a good move only when used sparingly. The only time you should really use it is when your opponent whiffs a big move. Otherwise, you are wide open for punishment.

It was good meeting you. I'm sorry for being so harsh on you with Akira but I wanted to show you how you could be punished for certain situations and to beat the Kumite habits out of you.

The combo I was using is [2_][6]+[P], [P], [2_][6]+[P], [6][6]+[P][K]. It requires a counter hit and will work up to Lau (excludes Jacky, Akira, Wolf & Jeffry and perhaps Goh). The good thing about this combo is it forces a guessing game after the last hit. If the opponent tech rolls to either side, you can trip ([8]+[P]+[K] or [2]+[P]+[K]) them and then get a down attack ([3]+[P]) or if they TR in front, you could try to low throw them or do a low attack. If the opponent doesnt TR, just do a pounce ([8]+[P]). The key to this combo is the input of the 2nd [2_][6]+[P]. You'll have to do it the modified way ([3][3][6]+[P]) to get it to work. This will probably take some time to practice.

Pai is a very good poker so you need to use her good moves in close combat. [6]+[P] and [3]+[K] are both quick mid attacks Neither leave you throwable after block so you could try her [6][4]+[P] which sabakis high and some mid level moves (actually, it still sabakis most high and mid moves in Evo Version A but is worse in Version B) when you think the opponent will try to attack. Her [P] is extremely fast so you can use that as well. Basically, when Pai counter hits with one of her poking moves, you should crouch dash ([3][3]) and force a guessing game between a throw like ([2_][6]+[P]+[G]) or a launcher like ([2_][6]+[P]). You can see that since you are crouch dashing it already inputs the [2_] you need for these moves so it's natural to follow up with either. Also, don't finish canned combos like [P][P][P][K] unless they're in a float because if it's blocked, you are at severe disadvantage.

It certainly was refreshing to see many people playing VF the other night. Hopefully, many of you saw how good this game is, even though it requires practice & study.

    A few comments:
    - fighting Brad is new to everyone. He's very user friendly much like Lau & Jacky and for the most part, his canned combo strings do not put him at a counterable disadvantage, usually he's at -6. From what I've studied, there are 2 ways to stop his offensive flow.

    1) hit him when he goes into a sway stance, it takes 24 frames for him to complete the move so he can be hit but you have to watch which sway he goes into since they have special properties.

    2) after blocking a canned combo and you think he will keep attacking, you need to interrupt him with a quick move like [P] or [2]+[P] then start your offensive flow. If you can't do this then you will be overwhelmed.

    - I was wrong about the earlier comment regarding evade attacks from being side turned. It can be done but it feels like you have to execute it slower than VF4C.

    - I think I mistakenly wrote to do Goh's [2]+[P]+[K] or [8]+[P]+[K] for the trip against side tech rolls. I meant to type [8]+[K]+[G] and [2]+[K]+[G].

Thanks for the Pai help, Killbomb and Shou-sama.

    Killbomb :
I meant to have done [9]+K instead of trying to add the second kick, but throughout the entire night I was pretty much button-trigger happy and added the second kick without thinking. Just doing the first kick would be a good poking attack, I think?

    Shou-sama
Also, that night fighting against Aoi and Akira, I did try poking with the [3]+[K] and [6]+[P] but it seems that whenever I did it, it was reversed. They are good attacks but I kind of grew wary of using them after that...Either I was really predictable using them or I was very unlucky.

The [2_][6]+[P] combo you show me ... does that work only on light weight opponents? I could pull it off sometimes in training mode, but could not pull it off to some of the heavier opponents such as Akira.

I'm also working on using Pai's reversals/inashis: In general only attacks that is of only one limb can be
    reversed?

Akai: Well, if you only do the [9]+[K] then you are only at a 4 frame disadvantage. If you do both, you are at -19 which leaves you open to a lot of things. However, I don't think [9]+[K] is very useful by itself as a poke. You should check out her movelist on this site from VF4 version C and study her frame data (I think most of it is the same in Evo....) to get a better idea of what moves are safe to use and what you can punish with when someone else misses. Shou-sama might be able to elaborate a bit on Pai poking tactics for you also. /versus/images/icons/cool.gif As for getting reversed all the time, you were most likely just getting predictable with your pokes. Shou-sama is very good at reading your attack pattern and punishing you when you get predictable.

    akai_masaki:
Counters are one of my specialties especially when it comes to opponents poking against me. I am always watching how you attack and if you don't mix up quite a bit with hit levels and throws, I will counter. There's no luck involved, just pattern recognition and conditioning. Few people will counter a lot though. The damage from a counter is minimal compared to the other options available. It's really just a mental damage thing. If you see someone using many counters, think about where & why the opponent would do this and just throw during that situation.

The combo I told you about last time works on all light and middle weight characters. You may be doing the second [2_][6]+[P] too slow. In training mode, you can turn slow motion & command input type B on and try it there to see what exactly is going on.

As for Pai's inashis and counters, she can reverse any high and mid level move that is not 2 limbed, circular or a body attack. Most of her inashis do not guarantee anything if the opponent struggles out of the stagger. What they do however, is give you a chance to force a guessing game like the one I posted before. I actually don't like her inashis that much because they don't guarantee anything but I do use them for positioning (ie moving the opponent towards the wall or possibly ringing them out). Her counters always moves the opponent backwards or to the side so you can use them for positioning as well.

The other night I noticed you tried to play Pai defensively by distancing yourself from the opponent. I'm more of the opinion that Pai is better pressuring the opponent in close range so most of my tips will reflect that mentality. I'll write up some Pai stuff later today.

Yeah, I was distancing Pai a lot that night, due more out of frustration than strategy. Got killed too easily up close. Now that I have some experience with the joystick and button layout from that night, I hope I will play better the next time and not just running away all the time /versus/images/icons/laugh.gif.

    STICK BAD

well I recieved my GGXX stick today, and I have to say I'm somewhat disappointed, the spring that came in the stick was very tight and felt the need to NOT RETURN TO NEUTRAL WHEN I MOVED IT. So I took that thing out and it worked for some reason. If anyone has any ideas as to how I can have the spring without it fucking up I would like to know. DONT BUY THE STICK FOR THE LOVE OF GOD
