Spotlite brought the whole VF3tb set-up, which was very cool. I saw him and LPC73 going back and forth a little. Catherine and I played a few rounds (we actually played VF3 heavily while we were dating). Catherine and PhoenixDth went at it, too.

There were others, but I don't recall.

I can see how that cab fare would scare you away.

In the future (Evo2k4), if you can do it, car rental is the way to go. Enterprise or similar can usually rent you a Kia Rio for, like, $19 to $29 a day - unlimited miles.

However... gas prices are still killer, no?

    Just kidding around.

VF3tb... would be fun to use Lion's uf+K and D+KK for pounces again.... would be fun to have some Taka matches again (Taka's the man!)--KURAI NAGE!!!! Kage cheezing's always great... Lion ringout cheeze, I miss it... Spotlite can see how similar my VF4Evo and VF3tb Aoi's are (though of course b,df+P+K didn't exist on 3tb) on certain levels... Lion vs. Akira... glad that's still a fun matchup in evo. Daring Spotlite to execute all of Akira's VF3tb slope and ringout combos during matchplay--NOW THAT WOULD BE FUN!!!! (sorry Bry, had to poke a bit of fun).

And let's not forget the Uramawari fun!!!

But I know I missed out on a lot of excellent Evo gaming. Would love to see how Shou's been playing lately. Would be fun getting destroyed by Joey again. Etc... But I just hope you guys all had a wonderful time in that good ol' VF Gathering Spirit.

Car rental's out too - you have to be 25 to rent a car from the majority of (cheap) companies, and I'm still 4 years off... and Ali doesn't have a license. Plus, Los Angeles traffic scares the shit out of me. I'd be dead in 5 seconds.

I'll definitely see what I can do for EVO2K4 if some of the JP crew are attending...

Sorry Tenchi and I couldn't make it... I was exhausted from getting about 4 hours of sleep a night for 4 days... we were trying to get to your house but we ended up pulling over at a rest stop and sleeping ...

I'll most certainly try to come up for EVO2K4!!

yeah, too bad you couldn't make it, nick. If you come down when Myke's here, we'll break out the tb set up again!

Actually, I found going back to 3 not only easy and VERY fun, but after playing 3 for a while, going back to 4 was SO hard for me. No one else seemed to have this problem... I kept hitting K trying to Korean step. VF3 felt really sharp and precise, whereas 4 felt somehow "rubbery". I think this is because of the longer recovery in 3, which keeps you from being able to do anything until it's time (buffer a little slower). While 4 has very slight recovery, and you can buffer at crazy speed, float starters recover quicker etc.

i'd be happy to start playing only 3 again, but I don't see that happening in our group /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif.

Talis: the joystick with the holes worn in the finish is mine. I'll get it when we come to your house.

If I do make it in a few weeks, I really would love to play some 3tb. I'll definitely play Evo, but I can see myself playing 3tb again for a few hours, easily.

I know what you mean Spotlite... Though it's usually easier for me to get back to Evo. But other people will adjust faster than me and there would be more people on their evo game than their tb game, so I'd be going through hell for awhile after the switchback hehehe.

As for the recovery thing, I think of it as just the buffer. VF4 followed in the mold of a lot of other 3d fighters (namely tekken) when it decided to allow a much more forgiving buffer, by allowing you to actually buffer in a lot of stuff during recovery.

Where we probably differ on perspective is that I'm under the impression that you're saying the recovery window itself is different (and it might be very slightly different in my case), but I feel that VF4 and Evo just lets you buffer during most of the recovery instead of only at the very end of it.

But there were definitely some super forgiving buffer cases for some things. Namely the K-step rules. Easy to buffer a crouch dash during a dodge. Easy to buffer a dodge during forward or back dashes. Easy to buffer a crouch dash from a back or forward dash. etc... Well... guess I'm wrong there, all those cases are cancels, not quite buffers hehehe.

Hitting K because there is no E in VF4... hehehee. Been there myself, fortunately not often.

Did you play Taka at all, Spot? Did anybody? He's such a fun character!

Also, was it super awkward going back to seeing your guy jam up if his attack was blocked? hehehe

To Pheonix, I like the Kage Kickflips myself.... and pounces rule! "When I was your age... we use to struggle like mad and nearly broke the controller whenever we were knocked down! Especially after an elbow heelkick combo!!!!!" Well... Sumeragi made it look easy anyways.
As far as North American VF went, he might as well have had a tech roll button with his recovery.

I remember Ohsu used two fingers on the [K] button. DJK was middle, ring...I figured at the time it was a holdover from VF3. This, of course, is impossible with these bratwursts I've got dangling.

I am an illiterate bastard, lack any sort of planning skills and live with my mom at age 33.

Considering a hefty chunk of Japanese VF players still live with their folks, though, that's not much of an insult.

Actually, since Plague´s place was around 90 miles away a one way trip with a taxi would have cost us closer to 200 then to 100$, two ways that would have amounted to between 300 and 400$.

Wow, where were you staying? My house isn't that far from the Convention Center.

I agree I wouldn't want to take a cab to my house from there, though.

    Nick,

correct me if I'm wrong, but aside from multi-part throws, doesn't Tekken have NO buffering?

however they changed the system, it just ammounts to a different feel. In VF3, you just have to wait a little longer after you attack, whether it's been guarded or hits. LA Andy and I both noticed it's much harder to combo becuase you have to wait a moment before entering your next attack in many cases.

But, without a doubt the recovery in general is longer and there's the "stop motion" guards you yourself mentioned. Akira's SDE is -6 on guard in VF4, it's -16 in VF3. Lion's elbow is -9, and his P is -3 on guard (yet, in a case where recovery is better in 3, Aki's P is +3 on guard /versus/images/graemlins/cool.gif).

Either way, it's all academic, both games are really fun to play.

    Spotlite

PS Plague, in all fairness, your house is pretty damn far from Downtown LA for someone who's coming from out of town w/ no car /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif.

    Hey Spot,

Yeah, I don't know what I was thinking... On the Tekken comment I meant. Probably got mixed up with Tekken's overlapping input buffer system or whatever you'd want to call it (what a lot of tekken fans call buffering, but different from what we were talking about on VF). One popular example I hear from tekken players is like holding RP and pressing RK so your character throws out a right punch and right after does a throw, something like that. Again, that is totally different from what I was talking about in VF. Sigh..

Looking forward to playing more 3tb sometime /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif and of course more Evo too.
