History does indeed repeat itself. We all had a similar conversation 5 years ago where I lamented the fact that only a handful of players in the West actually put the effort in to become competitive, competent even! 5 years later, the situation is no different. Owen, you're a great guy so don't take this as an insult (wow, deja vu), but I find your post hypocritical and you're still not competitive in my mind even when I just filter my scope down to NA. You're on a high now but in a few months (if not already), you'll have forgotten this and not be training in VF at all. Frankly, if I was still playing competitively in the West, I would be insulted at what you said here. You can become globally competitive even with limited comp. No doubt that it takes a great amount of dedication but it can be done. Allow me to toot my own horn here (and you know I will), I did it myself when everyone boo'ed me back then.

And for everyone who thinks because I live in Japan, I have an unfair advantage, I learned the fundamentals, frames and my style before coming here. Yes, since then I've come to Japan and played against the best in the world but it's not like they are sitting down and training me. In fact, they like to hide as much as possible from me, as a foreigner coming in and winning tourneys against them is too much for them. I don't play competitively anymore but 5 years later, I can positively say I would not have problems beating 99.9% of people on this forum because my level of VF is beyond most and there are so few people in the West who have the commitment to improve, can improve and know how to improve in a restrictive environment. Hats off to the guys who are still fighting the good fight.

What kind of limited competition are we talking about? best players in the word or average VFDC guy?

This post doesn't sit right with me,i don't like it not one bit. Feels like u lack to make a piont here. There are plenty of players in the west that have put in work, but something tenz to get in the way.....life. Yes life, work, having kids, going to school or back to school,VF is not going to pay the bills. My parents r not gonna think playing VF at whatever level u call high a success, and my girl/wife isn't as well.If u feel as u play at such a high level, than good for u,thats great really, but who cares.....i'll finish this later gtg.

Damn that thread was depressing, I found it funny though how Shang was killing Shou and he would never say anything back because he's ducking him. [IMG]

Are you forgetting why no one gave a shit about getting better at VF five years ago? Once VF4:FT didn't come out to consoles I immediately went back to playing ST as my main game. You make it sound like everyone just scrubbed around during VF4:EVO console days and no one got as good as the Japanese.

I remember people practicing like crazy during VF4:EVO. Maddy used to practice like crazy, and spend hours in training mode doing Minami Step or whatever, it's not like no one was hungry to do well. Ryan Hart? Myke? They held their own quite well against the Japanese and learned every little detail about the system of VF4:EVO. Remember Shinz and his brother POS? ShinZ was regularly traveling to Japan to take on the best VF players and he even invited Japan's best to South Korean to play.

During VF4:EVO there were tons of players who played the game to excel at the highest levels. The thing that killed the scene back then was VF4:FT (in my opinion). VF4:FT which came out five years ago but only in arcades and mostly Japanese arcades.

Now five years later where are we? Oh let's see...VF5R is nowhere to be fucking seen and almost no one here has any faith left in Sega nor AM2. A couple of days ago on SRK (in one of the premium threads) there were pages of discussion about Virtua Fighter 5R. The people who played VF were lamenting the fact that the game was never coming out. And the non-VF players said that if VF5R ever came out they'd pick it up. There is still interest in the game but no one wants to invest any time in VF5 vanilla anymore.

When VF4:EVO was out people wanted to get as good as the Japanese and people practiced like crazy. After 4:FT came out the international scene got shit on heavily by Sega so the idea of investing time into the series (VF) became less fun. And now we are at the same spot again.

Why am I going to invest in a washed up VF5 vanilla? To get as good as the Japanese? In what? VF5? A game that none of them play anymore? Even if I get amazing in VF5 it's still not VF5R so I don't care.

I regularly play some of the best players of ST and 3S on GGPO. I'm not afraid of investing time in a fighting game or playing against people who are better than me. Losing doesn't bother me, and practicing doesn't bother me either, hell I play 3S Q, I win maybe 30% of my matches. What does bother me is that I won't EVER play VF5R.

Fuck getting better at VF at this point. The game is dead. Thank Sega and AM2.

What Shou is saying - I think - is that the game that is front of people right now, that they are playing, is the one that they are playing at a surface level only. and have always been. and always will be.

It doesn't matter what version is current in Japan, Shou's contention is that the determination to be more than intuitive or run bad bad game strats and habits out of one's head and hands just doesn't exist in North America outside of a handful of people - for the game they are currently playing.

If we got R today - or last year - the player base might be larger but the above problem would not change AT ALL.
