Not from a Double, but we allow this from a Single. If Randy was in the game, I would have made sure this was possible. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Moment of honesty alert: Flash KOs are happening at a greater frequency than we anticipated. We anticipated that Flash KOs would occur as a very rare event - 1 out of 100 matches. In reality they are happening much more frequently than this, but I think they've added a cautiousness to the game that works to its benefit.

However, I will say that Chuck has no greater chance to Flash KO than Shogun, so perhaps you're confusing legitimate KOs with Flash KOs sometimes?

In the demo, Chuck overall is a better striker than Shogun. However, Shogun has fantastic kicks and clinch strikes, as well as a much better ground game. Shogun's biggest liability is his low Cardio; he is not able to stay quite as busy as Chuck.

I'm really glad I started this thread. I didn't think we'd surpass 10 pages!

My thoughts on flash KO's. As stated before, I love that they add some real excitement and caution to the game. I can see it pissing me off from time to time, but I've seen plenty of real UFC fighters leave the ring in a cloud of rage because they got KTFO (or the match got called).

That being said, theres a lot more you can do about flash KO's than you might think. And, as in any good fighting game, going for a FKO is a BIG risk. Most FKOs happen from head kicks or superman punches. Just like in VF, theres a right and wrong response to these moves. The easiest way to deal with headkicks is to dodge them. Since headkicks are only available at the striking range, you can usually tap back on the stick to dodge out of the way. Your opponent will be left slightly side-turned, so now would be the time for a meaty hook/kick to the head. Getting hit in the side of the jaw seems to make FKOs happen more often.

You can also reverse headkicks by tapping up on the right stick. This usually results in a takedown. My theory is if some n00b got 1000 wins with just FKO's, then they probably suck hard at the ground game. Take them to the mat and aim for maximum punishment. They might know just enough about the ground game to get it back to the feet, so block their transitions and try for a full mount. From there, pound their head a few times and get your own FKO (or "rock" them, at least).

Think of headkicks in this game like you do low punches (or any spammable move) in VF. Its powerful, for sure, and it can win matches but it is not god. Theres always a way around it.

My 2 cents.

U prefer Tekken and Soul Calibur to VF, but UR diggin UFC 2009 /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shocked.gif

That's interesting /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/confused.gif

pussykatz do you think UR representative of most Tekken and Soul Caliber players in terms of your feelings about VF and UFC 2009?

Just curious /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Is there a difference between shooting for a single and a double in non-guaranteed situations?

I don't represent anybody else, sorry.

I lol'd at this post.

You really have a thing for Namco games, don't you? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Maybe you should have been more direct asked "why don't you play VF?"

I play Tekken and VF seriously, but no longer SC (last Soul game I played seriously was SC on the DC), but if I'm being honest, I'm not sure I'll be picking up UFC 2009 based on the demo. I'll probably wait for a friend to get the final version and then test it out further. Yet, I wouldn't call myself a representative of either VF or Tekken groups. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

You can't really ask someone if they're representative of a certain faction. That would like asking "do all residents of california- feel the same way you do."

Not in the current game, no. Single legs only manifest themselves in counter situations. It's something I'd like to resolve in future iterations, if I get the chance.

Do you take damage when you grapple counter a strike successfully?

The reason I ask is because I want to faithfully recreate the epic upset of Gonzaga vs CroCop and that brought back the image of the huge welt on the side of Gonzaga's body from the kick that he caught prior to the takedown.

I do find it fascinating that katz is down with UFC 2009 but prefers Tekken and Soul Caliber to VF. Here's why,
I do play Tekken 5DR, Soul Caliber IV, and VF. Actually I play and own Tekken 1 thru 5DR and Soul Calibur 2,3, and IV. I've got Tekken on PS1, on PS2 and on PS3. I play it almost every day as a warm up for VF /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

I keep my Tekken Fighter online at some level of Dan so that
I keep goood diversity in my created rooms online. (Rank to low, nobody plays you because ur a scrub) (Rank to high nobody plays you cause they're scared) The same with Soul Caliber on Line I'll rank up to 300 or 400 and then start over again. On the other hand I only have VF4, EVO and 5. But IMHO VF is superior and its closer to UFC 2009 than either SC or Tekken.

If you play any of these games long enough and socialize with enough other people that play these games, you do have some idea,
whether your attitudes towards the games are typical or atypical.
You know generally whether ur representative or not.

For example my attitude toward Tekken as a Tekken player is not the norm. I've played well over 15,000 competitve Tekken matches over the last 5 years (most of them losses /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif ) but I see VF as a better and more satisfying fighter. Most players that have that kind of mileage in Tekken and some mileage in VF will prefer Tekken over VF. I know this because I've talked to many Tekken players (from all over the world) who have played VF and don't find VF to be better or more satisfying.

It would seem that for the same reasons a Tekken player would not prefer VF over Tekken they would also not dig UFC 2009. Some of the same criticisms that players level at
VF can also be levelled at UFC 2009. So I was just curious as to where
katz was coming from.

Panda, I'm only putting in my 2 cents here because I'm a 3d fighting game fan. I own and play every 3d fighter thats ever been made for the Playstation. There is something I like about all of them. But make no mistake about it, I can and do rank the fighting games I play in order of offensive and defensive skill required, and in terms of offensive and defensive possibilities available; and for my money VF is the best fighter on the planet and I've only been playing VF since VF4. I happen to think that I'm going to hold UFC 2009 very very high on my list because its also contains legitimate virtual martial arts.

I'm probably going to have VF and UFC2009/FNR3-4 at one level, and Tekken, SC IV, DOA, Urban Reign, Def Jam ICON, Fight For New York, Kengo, WOTS, MK,etc at a lower(more 4 casual fighting level) /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

5 more days until UFC2009 comes out, by the time I'm competitive enough to go online with a UFC fighter VF5R will be hitting the
stores /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Lol. Point well made.

(I'm not disagreeing with you either - I've been playing VF and Tekken since... VF and Tekken. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif And until now, VF is the best of the 3D fighters.)

Just got my call from gamestop, my UFC 2009 is gonna be there in the morning. So I know what my after-work-scenario is gonna be lookin like for a month or so. UFC 2009 should wash away my
where-is-VF5R-For-the-Consoles-Blues for a while.

I think any VF players that get into this will have the chops to deal with it. On the other hand, I think any Tekken players (who only play VF on the side) will only have half the chops to deal with UFC 2009. This will probably be reflected in the
rankings /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Out of those players whose main game is VF or Tekken that end up
playing UFC 2009 online, I would venture to say that the VF players will have the highest ranks /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif My Tekken Brothers & Sisters Don't H8 just contemplate /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Its not that I have anything against Panda, Kuma, the Kangaroo,
Combot, Roger Jr, or Mokujin [pause wait-a-minute] who am I kiddin; Yes! I do have a problem with them and their firebally ten hit combos /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif Its all so sordid and perverse /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cry.gif The mere idea of Jeet Kun Do against Kuma /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif Its sick /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shocked.gif

Maybe a good strong dose of UFC 2009 will be just what the doctor ordered for my Tekken brothers and sisters /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

I pre-ordered Friday afternoon and pre-paid as well. They're having a midnight party to release the game but I really would not bother to go to a midnight release for any game ever.

If you have the game, in the store on Monday, just sell it to me (I already paid)... There's no way I'm coming into Gamestop at 12 AM when I have to work at 9AM the next day, WTF? Shouldn't they at least do the midnight release on a Friday night so non-full-time-jobless-gamers can go? I really can't imagine more than 4-5 people coming into Gamestop at 12AM on MONDAY night period; so why bother making your employees deal with such painful work hours???

Probably cost them more $ to pay their employees to be there than profits from the number of copies sold... Who am I though? I don't know anything about it really... Just wish they'd give me the game today...

I hear U on this one, but, I've met some good peeps standing in line at a few midnight releases. Actually you might think that all avid players of the game play online (not necessarily),
I met peeps with the some of the same interests as me, that I probably would've never met otherwise(because they don't play online). I was wacky enough to stand in a midnight release line for game X, these other folks are wacky enough too, in turned out we had more than the game in common. And nothin beats having the local news channel covering all of the gamer freaks
that are wacky enough to stand in line for a midnight release.
I've had news cameras give me close-ups at lease twice /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Besides (You have to use the personal days for somethin :D)
And after your boss has seen you on the news standin in one of those midnight releases, he'll probably give you some time
off anyway /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

I read a couple of reviews... They all rave about the gameplay and depth of the game... I'm pretty pumped for this game, I think there's going to be a lot to learn and perfect which is what I love about fighters in general.

From my plays on the demo and the specific mentions of nuance and depth in the reviews, I think this game sounds very promising.

Plus, corresponding with Sixtwo in this thread also leads me to believe this game will be a high quality experience...

Wow, this game is deeper than I thought! After playing the retail version for about 7 hours straight now, I'm really impressed with the work that went into UFC 2009.

The career mode is great. You work your way up through the ranks while training and improving your skills. In a funny way, it reminds me of Monster Rancher 2 (one of my favorite games of all time). You choose what to do each week, and doing things like training/sparring lowers your stamina. You can rest for a week to raise your stamina back up. You can also do special events such as visiting another camp or doing some PR (signing photos, dvds, ect). You have to plan your schedule out so that you're not exhausted for your upcoming fight. I made that mistake once... ONCE!

Theres also a whole "cred" system I didn't know about. Its really cool and unlocks a bunch of stuff. You gain cred from just about everything, but there are subtle little things you can do to increase the amount of cred you gain. Its the kind of feature that the hardcore fans like me will go all out for, but the action gamer types don't need to mess with in order to have a full career.

My understanding is that you can't fight with a custom made fighter until they've retired from career mode, so it will be a while before I can go online with my custom fighter. Thats ok though, I can always pick GSP and go beat down some scrubs /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

I can just SMELL a "UFC Good Games" thread in our future (as long as its allowed).

You know what's so awesome about this game? There's all of this depth and a solid system and it's just their first outing. I can't wait to see and hear what they've got cooking for the next iteration. I've only experienced this kind of fighting game epiphany twice before.

Virtua Fighter 2
Soul Calibur

Pretty good company.
