I assume that it is like America, where the rural areas with fewer people are more conservative and thus they create the illusion that more of the country went "Tory"

The conventional wisdom is that Blair's status as Bush's Fluffer cost him votes, but the Tories are hapless and Labor's economic policies are still popular enough to make up for Iraq.

Blair is still better than that cunt Thatcher.

No, not really. Most rural areas in the UK fall to left of centre parties - Lib Dems, Scottish National Party, Plaid Cymru - except in the south east of England where practically everything is Conservative.

Re: Sorry I gotta say this

I just have to say this because I think it's true. I hear a lot of people in U.S. saying that the country is very conseervative, but the truth is that that's just bullshit. I really don't know how the fuck those conservatives put this thought in the country's head. The truth is that America is very liberal. The only problem is that people in the U.S. thinks it's conservative. Can someone explain this to me? I mean if we are conservative then why are ther gay people, we have abortion, we legalize drugs, and plus some more other shit. My question is then why do people think that the U.S. is conservative. Again, how in the world did the conservatives put that thought in our minds. I think the real deal is that the conservatives know that the country is liberal and so they came up with this lie so that they can hold off for a while longer because they know their days are numbered. They know that if the public ever found out that the country is truly liberal then they would be screwed. That the people would get control of the government and finnally be openly liberal. The poeple need to realize that the country is really liberal, even the liberal's themselves; even they think the country is conservative that's how good this lie has been concocted.

Sorry, I know this is not the right place to post this, but I just had to say this. My apologies If I pissed anyone off.

hey thats cool. I love a GOOD argument (cough BUNGLE cough.)

i think you're getting a bit confused here. there is actually a political party that calls themselves 'the conservatives' in the UK. I dont think that anybody has called america very conservative in this thread yet, however im sure theres alot of people who think so!! /versus/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Since i dont really know how the american politics system works i cant really say anything about it. However, your statement about how america is liberal on its drugs, i dont agree really. i mean, didnt the 80s/90s american war on drugs kinda go against the 'america legalises drugs' stuff you're going on about?

i remember alot of american students at my university talking about how the UK is so lax on drugs compared to the US..........

and on another note, wasnt the last election in america basically pushed in favour of BUSH because the church community came out in droves? What with bushes hard stance on gay marriage and somewhat vague premise on abortion? i could be wrong here but i always thought of the church community as heavily conservative.

Re: Sorry I gotta say this

I know that on the outside America seems conservative, but the truth is that it really is liberal. It's just that those conservatives up there in Washington somehow just decided to say "the country is liberal" and for some reason the people actually believed it. It's so bad that the liberals are buying into it. All I'm saying is to really look into America and see that it really is in possible control of the liberals. But everyone has this shroud of conservatism over their heads. But hey, thats just my opinion. It's all up to you yourself to asses the situation and come up with your own judgment. /versus/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: Sorry I gotta say this

I suppose there's different ways of defining 'conservatism'. In the UK the difference between the Consevative party and the more social democratic parties tends to focus on how public money is spent. For example, Conservatives are in favour of market driven health and transport systems, whereas Labour support state funding and managment instead.

In that respect the US is extremely conservative by European standards. You have a two-tiered health service that discriminates against poorer people, whereas in Britain everyone is given the same service. Also, in Scotland and other parts of Europe, eductaion has largely remained free. In the US and Canada students have to pay for their fees and everything else.

So, no I would not agree that America is basically liberal. Compared to many parts of Europe its politics smack of Darwinism, or 'survival of the fittest and wealthiest'.

I personally think the US has gone too far down this road. Looik at the poverty gap and violent crime the US has? I think allot of this is due to inequality. If you want to look at a country who have prospered at a faster rate that the US yet retained social democratic policies look no further than Japan.

If you put trade and economic growth top of your agenda as a matter of principle you end up with an ignorant inward looking country with a massive wealth divide - the United States.

    My Country Tis of Thee..

The recently released British report that politically damaged Tony Blair is also the most damning evidence so far against the Bush Adminstration and the criminal war that has been waged in Iraq. And yet, the story illicits nary a peep from the U.S. media. Read about it and weep here.

America IS the most conservative industrialized nation in the world.

    Think of...

    Draconian Prison Sentences /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Leaders who claim to be divinely guided /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

    Reproductive Rights Under Siege /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Biggest Gap Between Rich and Poor in the Free World /versus/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sometimes the state of my country makes me frown.

Akira-PH I think that you live in Chicago (a big city) and from where you sit things look different. There is a lot of ignorance, fear, and obliviousness in the "Heartland." I fear it may take another event like the Great Depression to wake those people up.
