After experiencing the community offline, I think it's safe to say that yes, out of the fighting communities in the US, VF is the gentlemen's game.

It kind of cheats a bit because with a smaller community paired with the average age being higher in VF than most other fighters, it kind of sets up for a more matured crew.

I do wish VF would gain more popularity in the US to mirror the popularity of the series over in Japan, but if it doesn't, I'll remain content with what we got, cause the current community is awesome. Can't ask for much else than that. We can always take what we got and use it to our advantage too, don't need a huge pool of players to get as good as we can get.

Is it better to have a big community with a large percentage of nasty/childish/rude players or to have a small community with mostly friendly players?

what kinda question is that? the best is to have a large community with only pros, of course!!

Well, it's just that typically, the larger/more popular your community grows, the more bad players you're going to get. But you'll also get more opportunities to play.

Where as if you keep communities small, you don't get to play as much due to less players, but the ones you do play aren't annoying to deal with.

Sometimes I wish that more people played VF, but at the same time I wish that disconnecters/trash talkers would leave VF and go play something else. So I dunno.:)

But it just seems to me that it's mutually exclusive, you can't have both.

They're not independent events, size does effect your community pool and from looking at the other communities it seems to make it a lil less mature as a result. What the VF community in U.S. has which the other communities didn't have is years of being small (I hear in VF2 it was huge though but I wasn't around for that so i don't know a lot about it) our vets make it such that our new comers are brought into a community that is nurturing and respectful on the get go. There won't one day be an influx of 500 players and we won't be able to teach each individual how VFers expect you to behave. It'll be a gradual process and we'll be able to shape and mold the newcomers to the norms the VF community has made. I think when we become a popular game i.e. tekken we will have a much better community overall out of all the games and it will only make our growth easier to continue.

    my 2 cents

I am indeed humbled by some of these responses. I will admit to behaving less than admirably during some of my VF sessions. I don't play nearly as much as I used to so when I sit down and play, I like to challenge people who will challenge me. So I would get a little irritated at that same 10th kyu who keeps challenging me over and over again with very little chance of winning. I played VF 1,2, and 3 in arcades and when the cabinets became too expensive for arcades in the us to carry them I was relagted to playing on consoles, even though I had nobody to play against. I always tried to get my gaming crew into VF but never succeeded. So now is my chance to try and grow the community the right way. So next time that 10 kyu keeps coming at me, maybe I should take it as a compliment and a chance to get somebody started on the right foot.

I could use that advice myself. I used to get annoyed when 10kyu's would fight me over and over. Good thing I stopped playing ranked matches because it really wasn't improving my game as much as playing player matches against people.

The funniest thing is sometimes someone seems like an ass
online, IRL they'll act the same but a lot of comic context
is lost online and you'll realize they are pretty cool.
