I dunno, I sort tend to look at EGM reviews the way I'd look at roadkill, i.e. not at all if I could help it. I'd be pretty suspicious of any opinions from those guys, and would keep far away from them. And maybe poke them with a sharp stick. I would not have surprised me at all if they'd gone the other way with their review, it's probably based on someone saying "well what did IGN and PSX say? What did gamepro say? Oh ok, the hip thing to like is VF currently."

Both of the games are good fighters. But all the review magazines; EGM, IGN, Gamespot etc. really don't know enough about the gameplay mechanics to make a real assesment on either one of the fighters. Which is a fact that really annoys the hell out of me.
Tekken4 is not a bad game at all; its just that it has had some dynamic changes made to its fighting engine. And I don't think everyone has made the transition into this new way of playing Tekken.

    Example being-
the backdash once a crucial part in a Tekken spacing game of doom. But now, the backdash has pretty much been killed in comparison to previous Tekkens and VF4. In order to compensate for this shortened backdash, jabs have been given more priority. Thus making it so players cannot backdash their way out of situaitons and must now use some real defensive skill. (parrying, blocking multilevel attacks and mixups)

speed Tekken4 is much slower than TTT or T3. and this probably bothers people until they get accustomed to it.

the new stuff 3D terrain, walls, ceilings, postion change, wall push, Just Frames. That's alot of new stuff that wasn't in previous Tekkens

I will admit that Tekken4 is no where nearly as good as its predecessor TTT. But I don't think its thats bad.
It just needs some time so people can learn. It just got its ps2 release what, a few days ago? And as I mentioned it is very different from other Tekkens and many of the old school strategies, mixups and characters are gone.

I think one of the things that appeals about tekken is that
Its easy to learn but hard to master.

Where as when i first started playing VF4 it was kind of rough.
(good thing for this site, with its flowcharts and jeffry FAQ)

*Note- In Tekken 10 hit combos aren't that big a deal. Anyone who is good at tekken will stop a 10hit combo cold by the 3rd hit or block it all and have frame advantage afterwards (in most cases). And 10hits aren't their so much to be used in battle as they are to teach speed and sometimes buffering of command inputs.

Here in New Zealand (Americas Cup country) we are malinged greatly with the PAL format. I estimate that VF4 PAL is around 12 - 15% slower running that its japanese counterpart. I have both, but have only ever used the PAL version for translation. Tekken 3 NTSC was the best of the series, the top brawlwer of its time (with Soulbalde), that played quickly enough that it was acceptible. I'm afraid that T4 is a letdown on all fronts, with the exeption of the crowd stage where you fight on the floor of the barroom.I cant wait to see this EVO version that everyone has been talking about. But for now,Mastering akira will suffice.
Comebacks are the most satisfying wins...
