Akai, some years ago didn't you also compile win/loss rate of characters in tournaments? What was the result of the collection? Do they reflect the Japanese tier list?

    VF5 Character Tournament Rankings

Sometimes it does, sometimes it don't.

For example, in the Japanese publications and opinion of the high level players (I think), Taka was always ranked low in pre-version B, but became top tier in B.

The "character tournament ranking" data came from Sega-specific tournaments. Taka did much better in tournaments (average/above average) pre-version B than suggested by the Japanese tier lists. In version B, Taka had high success in tournaments which is reflective of the Japanese tier lists.

Edit: For the Character Tournament Ranking data, it is more correct to say the "Taka players" had more success than Taka, the character itself, had more success.

I thought I posted this before but someone must have deleted it or it was another thread.

Anyway, on Kamaage's site there is a tier list that everyone can comment on and it changes according to the average character ratings.

At first I thought it was for R but then I noticed that Jean and Taka are not on the list so it must be Vanilla 5.

No idea what version mind you.

They use a pretty vague point system. But I still think it's interesting to look at anyway.

    1. Akira (64 Points)
    1.Eileen (64 Points)
    3.Pai (63 Points)
    3.Jacky (63 Points)
    3.Lei-Fei (63 Points)
    5.Lau (62 Points)
    5.Kage (62 Points)
    8.Wolf (61 Points)
    9.Vanessa (59 Points)
    10.Shun (58 points)
    11.Blaze (57 Points)
    11.Goh (57 Points)
    13.Aoi (55 Points)
    13.Lion (55 Points)
    15.Brad (54 Points)
    15.Jeffry (54 Points)
    17.Sarah (53 Points)

Personlly, I think is off in many cases.

Still, as I said, it's interesting to look at.

There's also an explanation to the side but google translate is pretty shit so I have no idea what they are really saying. Still, Jeffry's is obviously the best:

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Flexible and fuckable, so if you plug away a shot is big one in many ways.</div></div>

I think using a similar system to Tekken Zaibatsu to come up with a tier list would probably bear more accurate results. In the end it all comes down to the player and their yomi but there's no denying that some characters simply have better tools than others.

Seidon it's not a tier list. It's a popularity ranking..

I was thinking, maybe Jide was right, we do need a VF5 tears list thread. Every conversation we try to have about character balance always ends up with somebody getting defensive about their character of choice [IMG] So here's a list of the arguments frequently used to to halt all further discussion:

    * Akira: "...but he doesn't have a full-circular!"
    * Aoi: "...but she has a slow jab!"
    * Brad: "...but he can be low punched out of shoo shoo!"
    * Eileen: "...but she's the lightest character in the game!"
    * El Blaze: "...but he's not a midget, he's just small!" (yeah i have nothing, either nobody likes/plays him or he's actually considered balanced [IMG] )
    * Goh: "...but he's slow/linear/short range/doesn't do enough damage/a zombie!"
    * Jacky: "...but his throws don't do much damage!"
    * Jeffry: "...but his floaters are punishable!"
    * Kage: "...but TFT is breakable!"
    * Lau: "...but his sweep is semi-circular/his strings are mostly punches!"
    * Lei Fei: "...but his p,p is not THAT good when you think about it!"
    * Lion: "...but his lows are punishable!"
    * Pai: "...but most characters do max damage combos on her!"
    * Sarah: "...but she does chip damage!"
    * Shun: "...but he needs to drink first!"
    * Vanessa: i'll let somebody else fill this one because i'll be accused of being biased although something along the lines of "...but she can't be at both stances at the same time!" is frequently repeated to her defense, god knows i've used that line a million of times [IMG]
    * Wolf: "...but throws/evade p+k can be escaped!"

I hardly think that's Jacky's weakness. Probably everything ending high would be a weakness.

    <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">* Wolf: "...but throws/evade p+k can be escaped!"</div></div>

But one delayed throw = 70-80 damage. Wolf's biggest weakness is probably the lack of a true 14 frame mid or how slow his moves are in general.

Haha I love this too erd. I specifically like how the only thing Akira players ever say is bad for him is that he has no full circular...

Here would be what I would bitch about for Sarah: "but she can't employ a serious 14f mid conditionment from + frames in Flamingo"

Let me fill in for you what Vanessa players would bitch about then: "But she doesn't have a 13f mid full circular + on block move that launches on NH and CH!"

Bit of a strange bump considering these lists are for outdated versions of the game. Pretty sure Aoi is towards the bottom of the tier lists in Final Showdown Ver A.

Good times when Aoi was A tier and Taka D-tier in VF5R.. that's the game we should have instead of FS! :p

AM2 has a hard time moving a strong character down the list or up gently. It's either a huge bump or nothing at all really. Taka was bottom and eileen was top, then VFRverB came out and Taka moved to his current place(ish) and eileen was gently moved to the middle. Looking at the lists it seems like they decided to make eileen weaker by just giving other folks bigger and bigger combos to hit her with, but they finally went overboard. They blew it all up!

Hell yeah. More fragile, less evasive. I think, if they decide to make a character the most fragile out of the whole cast, at least give that same character some obvious strong point to make up for it. Evasion would be one of those things. Make her hard to hit. I don't feel her current version makes up for her fragility. Mixups are decent but still, not broken enough to make her weakness fade.
