I havent had a chance to test this yet, but from reading from some webpage it is done using a memory card (the default 360 package does not come with one, at least mine didnt). Propably someone else gets to test this first.

    <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">
Also, since it's been reported that there are no Item battles online, can we use the characters created for online play in regular, offline VS play, allowing us to use the same profiles whether playing online, Quest or offline vs?
    </div></div>

The basic idea seems to be that you unlock/buy items etc in quest more for your character, and you can use that character in online play (any character from your character select) but online play has separate ranking (kyu/dan/etc), wins/losses and win% for the character. So even if you had conqueror Akira with 100% items, it would still start as 10th kyu in the online play and would proceed in rank only by beating other real people. It could still have the costume customised with the quest items regardless.

If you use characters from quest mode, they have your XBL gamertag as charactername, not their own. For some weird reason the PR text also doesnt show in online matches..how weird is that.

    <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">
Is it possible to gain Dan/Kyu ranks in the non-ranked matches which can be played repeatedly between oppts? Can we effect our online ranks during offline vs play?
    </div></div>
Read above, no. You cannot affect your online ranking with offline play. The offline matches affect the offline ranking(same as quest)

It is possible to have online matches that do NOT affect rankings though. I had one of these with a Swedish friend. Its like someone creates a session and invites a friend to it. Then its like versus, can keep choosing rematch as many times as you want. In the ranked online play you cannot rematch immediately but must go via player search or create own session again.

When using the ranked online play, there are three ways to proceed:
    1. quick match (the game searches for random available players with random rank). Using this option will always make you a challenger and you play on 2P side.
    2. custom match (same as above but you may select "similar ranking" as search criteria. As if you were for instance DAN rank and would be looking for similar players to advance in rank.) Using this option will always make you a challenger and you play on 2P side.
    3. create a session (this is like tagging yourself as "available" when other players search for opponents. You will wait until someone selects you as opponent. This option will always make you play on 1P side.

Unofficially, the create session option seems like a good way to get matches in the kyu ranks.

Anyway, thats my views after one (sleepless) night

geez cant believe i havent posted here for like 3 months. Got my VF5 360 yesterday from amazon spent like all day getting the customizable stuff i had on my main characters again so i could appear as my style online. my first online match was a laggy bugger, my main thoughts went back to SF Anniversary and SNK vs Capcom on the xbox which were just lag fests most of the time, but being from the UK and being matched up against guys from Japan does that. My subsequent matches have been lag free, however the amount of people who's style is hammer the punch button repeatedly is hard to ignore having gone down now a good few times as I'm a Wolf player to the likes of Lei Fei, Lion and of course Pai. There is a fine line between master and masher, but its pretty embarassing losing to those who have little to no skills. lol

If they have little to no skill, and you lose to them, doesn't this mean you have even "littler" to "nonest" skill?

what i would say is there's a certain number of frustrating players out there who spam moves over and over...Lei Fei is a popular choice....it's not that you cant beat them, more the fact its a pain in the tits dealing with them as their tactics force you into a similarly cheap game.

this is balanced by the majority of players out there who play the game with heart and conviction, mixing things up appropriately.

DubC lol no dude, ive got the skills but like Ash gets where im coming from.
Maximum however nails it straight though,

"more the fact its a pain in the tits dealing with them as their tactics force you into a similarly cheap game."

within a matter of seconds you see whether a person is a honed VF player, by the combination of movements and chosen attacks.
But its true there is a balanced of players between those who have knowledge and those who rap as fast as possible and hope for the best.

Maybe it's tough to play against all punches online, but even the best players have to be able to adapt to the whackest possible 'strats'. If you're still finding yourself frustrated with people who truly mash P all day, just choose Jacky and stand in neutral, all day /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

    <u>Wolf Options vs P:</u>
    -evade
-46p+k at mid to close range<<<High crush move..
-p+k+g (r.a.w.)<<<can be done seperate or with canned string..
-4k at mid range<<great for keep away..
-3p+k at mid range<<knockdown to rushdown setup..
-3k at mid range<<<standard tool for keep away..

Wolf can deal with p it just takes time to adjust to where your opponent places it. Remember your a "HEAVY WEIGHT", so this is your weakness in general. Once you apply some of these options they will stop and respect your space thus conditioning them and now it's your turn to take advantage.

    guide against mashers:
Low punch -> launcher goes a long way /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif After that just punish the rising attack that is inevitably always coming with something suitable. I dash away from rising attack range and do Sarah b+K+G -> combo so far.

Wolf can do short shoulder that goes under highpunch..

Surprisingly, people are saying that the online connections are overwhelmingly better than other fighters we're use to and that it's pretty damn good. I havn't tested it and will remain skeptic till I do, but some of my good friends are even saying this.

I agree completely with this. The number of Lei Fei's I've played against who just spam the same punch string over and over again. I've finally found ways around it.

That said, there are some good players online. In particular one Goh who I have lost about 7 times to.

I also seem to keep doing a Tim Henman against a fair few people - i.e. be 2 rounds up only to bottle it and lose 3-2.

another thing i'm finding really great about the online mode is the ability to train with your friends. so far i've set up training sessions with Zeextremekid and MadArc simply by setting the round count to 6 and the time to 60 secs (when those rounds expire you can simply select play again and you've got a limitless practice session). with the headsets you can then discuss what you want to practice and provide feedback.

last night MadArc and and i must've spent a good hour practicing throw escapes, evades, guard breaking, ect ect. the connection was so great it was like practicing with a friend right next to me.

that was always going to be one of the coolest things about online vf5, the potential to learn from loads of people outside your local VF crew.

now, does anyone know chibita's gamertag? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Looks like a big rotary switch that simultaneously switches multiple connections at the same time. Looks like a real bitch to handle though. Probably nearly 100 wires to solder in there. Though it's at least pretty much guaranteed to work if you don't give up half way through. Haha.

Since this seems to be the general xbox live topic.

Was nice playing you again Stephen sorry I had to run off so quick I will try and dig out my headset for next time.
