chessclub.com links to a couple of excellent obits...the one from Leonard Barden is the best of the group.

I play on chessclub.com when I get bit...it's a pay membership but worth it if you are or ever have been a tournament or serious player given the competition & tourney coverage. Usually after two weeks I have to pry myself away and go do something (anything) else. Caissa is a cruel mistress & she will ruin your life. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Yeah, but he was amazing in his prime. He was the first real child prodigy in chess and his ELO score was absolutely incredible for the time, he was like some 150 points ahead of everybody else. And god, those 6-0 6-0 against Taimanov and Larsen in the candidates matches leading up to the world championship match.

Also, I really quite like the idea of random chess. It would really shift the game towards over the board analysis rather than home preparation.

Despite all the despicable anti-semitic craziness that followed, he's still the greatest to me.

Random chess (ie Fischer Random Chess) - a variant of the game where chess pieces are randomly placed on the board as an attempt to make a more creative / less theory-based game of chess.

Sammy Reshevsky was before Fischer and was much younger when he started making waves. Think Chibitarou but smaller. Kid was 6 & beating masters one on one and in simultaneous exhibitions staged by his handlers.

Random chess refers to any chess variant which alters the battle array of normal chess. The differences between these variants boil down to the placement of the pieces. In "Fischer Random" or "960" (a name for the total possible number of battle arrays in this variant) a computer program or one of a few manual piece placement procedures is used to generate the starting position following these guidelines:

White Pawns are placed on their Orthodox home squares.
All remaining white pieces are placed on the first rank.
The white King is placed somewhere between the two white Rooks.
The white Bishops are placed on opposite-colored squares.
The black pieces are placed equal-and-opposite the white pieces.

    Castling rules for Fischer Random:

Neither King nor Rook has moved.
The King is not in check before or after castling.
No square through which the King must move is under attack.
All squares between King and Rook are vacant.
No other pieces occupy any of the squares passed over by the King or Rook.
The castling move does not result in a capture.
The final squares for the king & rook in 0-0-0 & 0-0 castling are the same as in standard chess.

960 is fair, fun & really challenging from the "opening disaster avoidance" standpoint...

YEsss!!! i have no friends to play Vf but at least now i have some to play chess. Im a really hardcore chess lover so if anyone wants to play chess anytime just pm me and ill give you my msn so we can play. And no need for ventrilo server just get skype its free /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

BTW im a chess teacher ( for kindergarden till 6th grade ) altough im not that good of a player but i am very dedicated to the game.

Chess and fighting games are very alike. But unlike some people think chess is not about thinking 5 or 6 moves in advance. thats bullshit. Chess is about analysing a position and getting as much little advantages on the board as you can. by doing that you will overwhelm your opponent and tactics possibility will emerge from everywhere. ( tactics= What people like to call thinking X move ahead) Tactics comes from the strategic parts of chess. If you learn the strategic part you will then find tactics a lot easier to see. Anyways i dont wanna get into to much technical stuff but if some of you want to play chess please pm me or jhust post here /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

if you are going to play chess online, then yahoo chess has got to be the way to go. I used to be addicted, but since i have sold my brain for lunch money and now enjoy the less refined pursuits in life such as VFDC, VF5, and watching full grown men accidentally getting hit in the junk by innocent little kids.

i shall be brutally honest here, the quality of players on yahoo chess is absolutely garbage. even I have a rating of fucking 1600 on yahoo chess because generally the competition there is so poor.

if you want to play some stronger opponents, use ChessbaseLight to play on the playchess.com server

EDIT: however, free accounts on the playchess.com server expire after a period of time (you can still play unrated games, but you can only play in the cafe room and beginners room not the main playing hall. also, no more rated games if account has expired) so you need to create new ones after each expiry. (or actually buy the premium account)

    yahoo chess ID: k_to_da_g
Chessbase ID: KtotheG and K to the G (both expired, only for unrated games atm)
